The Ice Cream Olympics 2013 - Intimate Ecologies: Tastes of the Monument

By Anita McKeown (Vimeo) - http://bit.ly/1d4u32u

The Ice Cream Olympics is a participatory field day, a fun and
accessible way to explore bio-cultural diversity one scoop at a time!

What better way to explore a local ecology and sustainability than
through the making and eating of ice cream?

The video was made to support the crowd funding campaign for The Ice
Cream Olympics education programme http://www.icecreamolympics.com/

Book review: Anti-Media. Ephemera on Speculative Arts.

Anti-Media. Ephemera on Speculative Arts, by researcher and theorist
Florian Cramer.

Review by Regine Debatty

I've never reviewed nor even read anything that looked remotely like
this book before. It is bold, thought-provoking, and extremely fast-paced.

[NetBehaviour] Book launch Florian Cramer – Anti-Media: 13 September 2013

Book launch Florian Cramer – Anti-Media: 13 September 2013

The official launch of Anti-Media. Ephemera on Speculative Arts will be
held on September 13th in WORM in Rotterdam. Florian Cramer will give an
8 hour lecture, improvisation-style. Admission is free. Be there!

1. There is art, and there is anti-art.
2. If that is so, there must also be anti-media.
3. ‘Media’ as a term is as fuzzy as ‘art’.
4. Both ‘art’ and ‘media’ refuse to go away.
Anti-media is what remains if one debunks the notion of media but can’t
get rid of it.

This book reflects on anti-copyright, porn, creative industries, post-
punk, Arts and Crafts and constructivism, cooking as contemporary art,
Oulipo, post-digitality, mezangelle, Anonymous and 4chan, Fluxus,
amateurism, file sharing networks, pop culture, 17th century poetry,
electroacoustic music, Neonazi communication guerilla, Rotterdam,
romanticism, electronic literature, Mail Art, ontology, Super 8,
Rosicrucianism and conceptual art.

[NetBehaviour] The Cave of Sounds interactive sound installation @ The Barbican 19-26 August

2013-08-22 Thread Sus Garcia
(Sorry for any cross-posting)

The Cave of Sounds at the Barbican 19-26 August.
Private view Thursday 22nd from 7pm

The Cave of Sounds is an interactive sound installation created by Tim
Murray-Browne with members of the Music Hackspace. The work features eight new
musical instruments, created individually by Music Hackspace members Borja
Alexandre, Dom Aversano, Tim Murray-Browne, Sus Garcia, Wallace Hobbes, Daniel
Lopez, Tadeo Sendon, Panagiotis Tigas and Kacper Ziemianin.

Arranged in a circle facing inwards, members of the audience are invited to
explore, experiment and experience improvising music with others around them.
The instruments are all digital and networked together, allowing them to subtly
align in terms of harmony and tempo.

The Cave of Sounds was created through Sound and Music’s Embedded Composer in
Residence programme with the Music Hackspace. Embedded is funded by the Esmee
Fairbairn Foundation with support from Arts Council England.

[NetBehaviour] Berlin Aug. 24th: SLEAFORD MODS, CHARLES MONEYPEN, JOKE LANZ

2013-08-22 Thread Manuela Benetton
With apologies for x-posting

*Saturday, 24th August 2013 at West Germany*
Doors: 9pm

Old Spice Fucker presents:

*SLEAFORD MODS (Nottingham)*
*CHARLES MONEYPENNY (London)*
*
*
*DJ's:*
*STEVE UNDERWOOD (Nottingham)*
*JOKE LANZ (Berlin)*

Sleaford Mods: Two scowling men from the Nottingham area, making aggro punk
poetry that sounds like the bastard child of John Cooper Clarke’s Beasley
Street grown up on hard knocks, rave culture and the Wu-Tang Clan. Jason
Williamson is the voice: a big man with an angry face, used to be one of
that “door-swings-open, swagger-to-the-bar-crew” but now grown older and
wiser. His delivery is venomous, confrontational, but often funny and
delighting in twists of language: eyeballing the “scaly-faced booze
pricks”, the geezers with their “concrete dagger swaggers”, and saving
special contempt for “the cunt with the gut and the Buzz Lightyear haircut,
calling all the workers plebs”.

Williamson was born in Grantham in Lincolnshire, and lived in London and
San Francisco, bouncing through a process of jobs and bands, before despair
set in and he found his way back to the East Midlands. There, he founded
Sleaford Mods, which began as a solo project but has now expanded to a duo,
with co-conspirator Andrew Fearn handling bass guitar and beats.

Sleaford Mods released five albums on Nottingham label Deadly Beefburger
before getting the attention of Steve Underwood of UK label Harbinger
Sound. Harbinger is best known as a noise and industrial label, releasing
new and archive material from the likes of Ramleh, Smegma and Hair Police.
But Underwood heard something in Sleaford Mods’ attitude that he liked.
Hence Austerity Dogs, a vinyl collection of new and old tracks of an
appropriately austere stripe – the soul loops of some of the early material
stripped away, replaced by a flinty bedrock of lurking bass guitar and
lo-rent drum machine.

For Williamson, Sleaford Mods is a mission, an assault on a music culture
that celebrates the clichéd and banal. “Expression has to be more than a
skinny looker with a fucking Les Paul, or some careerist band who had their
ups and downs but finally took off, blah blah. You go to work, come home,
read something, and its usually riddled with images like that. That Jaimie
bloke from The Kills, bashing his guitar onstage – it’s an image that’s
been placed before you over and over. ‘Elegantly wasted’. High-fashion
dogshit. So obvious.”

“Polybius” (2013), James Houston.

Scottish artist and filmmaker James Houston has been toying with the
idea of recreating music using old computer hardware for some years now.
The latest production, titled Polybius features Julian Corrie who
wrote and performs the piece, playing a guitar in a dry swimming pool,
used as an input to control sounds produced by a SEGA Mega Drive,
Commodore 64, floppy disk drives and hard drives.

Hi Sus,

This looks great, I'm unfortunately not able to come to this one -
what's going on for next week? If I can find time out of my tight
schedule, I may be able to make next weeks myself... but also others may
wish to know...

I looked at the page mentioning next weeks events
(http://hackthebarbican.org/week-4-26-31-august-holding/) but there is
no info on there and it says 'Programme details will be announced shortly'.

is there information about it anywhere else?

Thanks Sus, and wishing you well.
