[NetBehaviour] Opening exhibition Shu Lea Cheang - plateforme intermedia / Apo33
SHU LEA CHEANG (Taiwan/Paris) BABYWORK From 18th of April to 8th of May 2012 -Exhibition - Plateforme intermedia Opening Wednesday the 18th at 6pm Plateforme intermédia - La Fabrique - Nantes / France Open from Wednesday to Sunday from 2pm to 6pm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEjB5UNjqvw The Locker Baby project recalls Ryu Murakami's noted novel Coin Locker Babies (1980) in which twin boys were abandoned at birth in one square foot coin locker metal box at Tokyos subway station. The boys grew up haunted with the sound of human heart beats, those of their birth mothers. Coin lockers are Japan's train station landmark and much utilized by shoppers and travelers. In post-war japan, unwanted babies (often interracial) by unwed mothers were dropped off in coin-lockers. Fear of terrorists' explosive deposit, coin lockers have ceased to exist at public space in most metropolitan cities. In 1995, when Tokyo Doomsday was called for by cult Aum Shinrikyo, the coin lockers were sealed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Force for a day. The historical association and references derived from coin lockers inspire the Locker Baby project. The Locker Baby project proposes a fictional scenario set in year 2030. The transnational DPT (DollyPolly Transgency) advances clone babies as an industry. Genes extracted from deep sea pearls harvested off Okinawa Island are identified as best breed. Coin lockers situated in busy Tokyo train stations are located for underworld test tube fertilization. Ticking seconds to oblivion in darkness, the lockers announce the birth of the Clone Generation. Serving themselves in the intelligent industry, the locker babies are entrusted to negotiate human memory and emotions. The Locker Baby holds the key to unlock the networked inter-sphere of ME-motion (Memory-Emotion), a playfield of sonic imagery triggered only by human interaction. SHU LEAN CHEANG Shu Lea Cheang (born in Taiwan in 1954) is a multi-media artist who works in the fields of net-based installation, social interface and film production. Over the past decade, she has emerged as a prominent figure in new media art. Cheang is one of the leading multimedia artists dealing with multidisciplinary studies. Her work is unique in allowing viewer interaction. She is most noted for her individual approach in the realm of art and technology, creatively intermingling social issues with artistic methods.[1] Cheang's art ranges in mediums such as film, video, net-based installation, and interface, which explore ...ethnic stereotyping, the nature and excesses of popular media, institutional - and especially governmental - power, race relations, and sexual politics. (Shu Lea Cheang) Most recently, she has moved to 35mm feature filmmaking. She has been a member of the Paper Tiger Television collective since 1981. Though originally based in New York, Cheang is currently living and working in Paris, France. Thought as a space for work in progress composed of shared transformation, manipulation and experimentation of practices. CHAOSLAB v0.2 (Hackart) ? test preparation for piksel Festival. random evolution aperiodic bifurcation Chaotic systems are not as predominant as indeterminacy. Chaoslab creates sensitive dependence on initial conditions, devices and inputs by having evolution through phase space (installation/workshop within a place) that appears to be quite random. APO33 THIS SUMMER!!! DON'T FORGET TO BOOK YOUR TICKET ONLINE // A10lab, Area10, Apo33, Noise=Noise, Beyond Signal, Fibrr Records Sound Research Practice, Goldsmiths presents: // RAINFOREST IV - DAVID TUDOR a collaborative environmental work, spatially mixing the live sounds of suspended sculptures and found objects, with their transformed reflections in an audio system. /// PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION 3rd 4th of July 2009 - from 2pm to 23pm £10 (online booking http://www.wegottickets.com) £12 (on the door) at AREA10 PROJECT SPACE Eagle Wharf Peckham Hill Street London - SE15 5JT (White building behind the Library) Buses: 12, 36, 37, 63, 78, 436, 345, 177, 312, 343 Train: Peckham Rye Station /// In 1973 I made Rainforest IV where the objects that the sounds are sent through are very large so that they have their own presence in space. I mean, they actually sound locally in the space where they are hanging as well as being supplemented by a loudspeaker system. The idea is that if you send sound through materials, the resonant nodes of the materials are released and those can be picked up by contact microphones or phono cartridges and those have a different kind of sound than the object does when you listen to it very close where it's hanging. It becomes like a reflection and it makes, I thought, quite a harmonious and beautiful atmosphere, because wherever you move in the room, you have reminiscences of something you have heard at some other point in the space. It's (can be) a large group piece actually, any number of people can participate in it. It's important that each person makes their own sculpture, decides how to program it, and performs it themselves. Very little instruction is necessary for the piece. I've found it to be almost self-teaching because you discover how to program the devices by seeing what they like to accept. Its been a very rewarding type of activity for me. It's been done by as large a group as 14 people. So that was how our Rainforest was done.? David Tudor was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1926. He studied with H. William Hawke (organ, theory), Irma Wolpe Rademacher (piano) and Stephan Wolpe (composition and analysis). His first professional activity was as an organist, and he subsequently became known as one of the leading avante-garde pianists of our time. Tudor gave highly acclaimed first or early performances of worksby contemporary composers Earle Brown, Sylvano Bussotti, Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christian Wolff, Stephan Wolpe, and La Monte Young, among others. Tudor began working with John Cage in the early fifties, as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and with Cage's Project of Music for Electronic Tape. Tudor gradually ended his active career as a pianist, turning exclusively to the composition of live electronic music. As a composer, Tudor chose specific electronic components and their interconnections to define both composition and performance drawing upon resources that were both flexible and complex. Tudor was one of four Core Artists who collaborated on the design of the Pepsi Pavilion for Expo '70, Osaka, Japan, a project of Experiments in Art and Technology, Inc. [NetBehaviour] RAINFOREST IV - DAVID TUDOR - 3rd 4th of July - AREA10 - LONDON!
// A10lab, Area10, Apo33, Noise=Noise, Beyond Signal, Fibrr Records Sound Research Practice, Goldsmiths presents: // RAINFOREST IV - DAVID TUDOR a collaborative environmental work, spatially mixing the live sounds of suspended sculptures and found objects, with their transformed reflections in an audio system. /// PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION 3rd 4th of July 2009 - from 2pm to 23pm £10 (online booking http://www.wegottickets.com) £12 (on the door) at AREA10 PROJECT SPACE Eagle Wharf Peckham Hill Street London - SE15 5JT (White building behind the Library) Buses: 12, 36, 37, 63, 78, 436, 345, 177, 312, 343 Train: Peckham Rye Station /// In 1973 I made ?Rainforest IV? where the objects that the sounds are sent through are very large so that they have their own presence in space. Many of Tudor's compositions have involved collaborative visual forces: light systems, laser projections, dance, theater, television, film. Radioact participates in this evolution. The listener can chose to listen to a specific emission, or listen to whatever is on offer on the airways at any given moment. The program is made up of many different emissions, radio reportage?s, play lists from invited dj?s, commentary etc . Each branch constitutes a sonic installation which, out of a specific location, collects its own locally generated sound effects, transforms them via a digital automaton into a new arrangement of sounds. The outcome is then broadcast locally, through loud speakers, and on the Net, through streaming. Le Poulpe belongs in the city, where people live and make noise. It gives a virtual body to this city, expressing through sounds its invisible mouvements and its continuous flows. Re: [NetBehaviour] Fwd: [ORG-discuss] London Hack Space
Hi we are trying to set up a medialab since one year in Area10 where we could welcome such meeting and open the space for projects like that. We faced a lot of difficulties due to the space condition. The space that would have been dedicated to it have been flooded 2 weeks ago... http://www.a10lab.info is the backup website of few months ago (our server was under water!!!) We are actually looking for a new space for the medialab, or in Area10 or near. Also we are actually opening a new space in Cossall Estate, peckham, dedicated to new media, hacking, open hardware, free software, workshop, digital art...etc I will join the list and propose it there but if some guys are already interested we could talk about it for some meeting or proposition. the space should be operational early march! cheers Julien Ottavi -- Forwarded message -- From: Jonty Wareing jo...@jonty.co.uk Date: Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 11:11 PM Subject: [ORG-discuss] London Hack Space To: org-disc...@lists.openrightsgroup.org For some time now London has been in need of a proper hacker space. The number of hacking groups has exploded over the last year or so with new events popping up every weekend. Despite this we're still missing a meeting place, a place where we can store projects and share ideas. Where we can meet like minded people who share our passions. Where we can learn new skills without making a significant investment. We'd like to change that, but we need people to help. If you're interested, we've set up a preliminary mailing list on google groups where we can gather. It's just temporary until we come up with a name and have more solid foundations.
