It has been used for Harry Potter, Grinch, Fast and the Furious, just to
name a few. And its opensource like Gimp, but it can handle CIN, DPX or
EXR files.

i just wanted to draw your attention to cinepaint, which is a great
choice for motion picture artists ...
It has been used for Harry Potter, Grinch, Fast and the Furious, just to
name a few. And its opensource

there is a plugin for gimp so it can export images on CMYK.
there is also an option that export images as separate colors even on
CMYK (you will get 4 BW plates in the end)
