Disabling and stopping is enough, there's no need to fully mask the
service; i.e.:
# systemctl disable NetworkManager
# systemctl stop NetworkManager
# /other/prefix/NetworkManager --debug

Beware, though, doing this works as long as the dbus files are the
same in the system-installed and custom-compiled version.
