it's using an auto-assigned address
(169.something IIRC). Manually selecting the Wired Network entry in
the NM applet fixes it quickly but not before some of my default
start-up programs (evolution, firefox, soft-phone, etc) start balking.
Is this typical?

Used to get this kind of garbage when I was having trouble with WEP. Just
a thought. Is it possible that the cause is not actually garbage from the
DHCP but just off the air noise?
