[17] Ole on Ruud part 9869875
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"Ruud is a fantastic player and we work well together as a partnership. The service we
receive is tremendous and I just hope we can keep it going for the rest of the season.

[16] Ole's got rhythm
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"This season has made a massive difference. Before, when I was playing one game and
then left out for a couple, I never got into the match rhythm.

"Playing a full game, I know I don't have to do everything straight away, I can do
other jobs.

"So I get a lot more pleasure from making an all-round contribution to the team."

[15] Giggsy: We haven't plated well in the big games
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"I think it's something we need to address and we always used to produce our best
performances in the big games," said Giggs.

"We've not done that this year. A lot of the games have not gone our way and we've
made mistakes. We have to get rid of those mistakes and start playing well again.
Hopefully we can strike a rich vein of form when we play these games. Leeds and
Chelsea away and Arsenal at home are big games for us.

"But we're pretty confident about going to their places and these are the places where
you have to go if you want to win the League. We're looking forward to these games and
we're up for it."

[14] Ole on the highs and lows
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"Yes, it is a worry. It's a 12-point swing when you lose twice to a team like
Liverpool.

"We've had some real highs and real lows. I'd have to say the 3-0 defeat at home to
Chelsea was maybe the worst feeling I've ever had walking off the pitch at Old
Trafford. That was dreadful.

"The supporters had to look within themselves during the bad patch, to see if they
really were fans or hangers-on. And the support was very good at that time.

"We know this is the time of the season when the Premiership and Champions League are
going to be decided. We've been there before and I hope that experience might get us
through it.

"If we are top of the League at the end of the season, I don't really care how we do
it. It's so close it might come down to goal difference, and we'll do well if it comes
to that."

[13] Panic on the streets of London

>From Ananova:

Premiership clubs set to scale back

Premiership clubs have hit back at accusations that they are haemorrhaging football's
wealth and contributing to the crisis facing smaller clubs.

Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor is the latest to call for a
more even spread of future television revenues around every professional club.

Taylor claims many small clubs will go to the wall if ITV Digital do not come up with
the £180million they owe the game under the terms of their current broadcasting
contract with the Football League.

But Premiership chiefs insist the idea that every top-flight club has millions of
pounds surplus is not true.

And they say that they too will be left reeling by the consequences of ITV Digital's
slide into administration.

West Ham boss Glenn Roeder said: "We're going to be like a lot of other clubs who
won't have a lot of transfer cash this summer.

"Because of that I think that transfer fees and salaries will start to come down.

"What happened with ITV Digital is going to mean a shake-down. Every manager always
whinges about wanting more money to spend but we also have a responsibility to make
sure the club survives. The club is the most important thing."

And even Arsenal say they will not be exempt from the effects.

Hill-Wood said: "There will be a knock-on effect on the Premier League. I think even
in the Premier League there will be players and staff who will be cut.

"Some of the players released will still be on contract. This is a period of
retrenchment for football. It has got to be. We've got to the limit of our spending. A
lot of big clubs are struggling."

'But I am working hard at Manchester. I do feel the pressure there because I have to
play well every week. They are a professional club and only accept 100 per cent. That
is only right and is what I give.

'My team is Manchester United and I will defend them and fight for them with all my
heart.'

'It is an honour for me to play for Manchester United. They are the greatest club in
the world. I am equally proud to play for Argentina - one of the strongest football
nations in the world.

'As a professional footballer, I have all the tools to do everything I want in 2002.'

Leeds Wins 22
Manchester Utd Wins 34
Drawn 31

Man Utd are unbeaten in the last 8 Premiership meetings, winning 5.

Man Utd have won 8 of the last 12, losing only once. Leeds' last win came in Sept
1997, when David Wetherall scored their 1-0 winner at Elland Road.

Man Utd have lost only 3 of the last 25 meetings, winning 11 in that time. All their 3
defeats have come at Elland Road.

In the 19 Premiership meetings, Man Utd have gained 36 points compared to Leeds' 15.
Leeds have scored only 11 goals in the 19 games, scoring in only 7 of those.

There has been 14 bookings in the last 2 meetings (8 for Man Utd, 6 for Leeds). There
has not been a sending-off in the last 7 meetings. Last red card was for Leeds' Gunnar
Halle in their 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford in May 1998.

Fergie says:

"Everyone came through the games they played in OK, except Seba who's got a problem
with his heel. Hopefully he'll be OK by tomorrow though. We seem to have a full squad.

"It's been a fraught week, all the internationals we've had. It's not what the
managers want, and not really what the players want either. You sit through Wednesday
hoping everyone will be OK, and fortunately that was the case."

---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
They're unbeaten in the last six, I think. That's good form that. But that doesn't
matter when you go to Leeds, you're always going to get a difficult game, it's always
going to be an emotional, high tension game. We've got a decent record there and we
hope to perform well tomorrow. The players have done that in the past. The atmosphere
will be electric, and that's something we've got used to over the years.

"I think they're fifth and obviously they will see that Newcastle are starting to
stumble a little bit so they've got the incentive of Europe. It's quite a battle at
the top.

"I've paid more attention to Liverpool and Arsenal this year as you expect them to be
the main challengers. Leeds have had their bad spell, everyone has that."

Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"This game against United is a massive one for both teams. We will both treat it as a
must-win match.

"They cannot afford to lose again after slipping up against Middlesbrough, otherwise
winning the title would be a bit of a long shot.

"And we need the points to keep up the pressure on Newcastle in fourth.

"It's going to be tough for us because they are the best team in Europe. But I feel
I'm due a win over United because I haven't played on a winning side against them in
10 attempts with Leeds and West Ham.

[4] Fab: Arse treat players like robots
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
"I know the right time for me to take my foot off the gas, but maybe that wasn't the
case with Robert.

"At Manchester United, and also the French national side, they understand that
footballers are not robots.

"That is not the situation at other clubs. It is not easy to ask one's manager for a
breather. For clubs like Arsenal, United or Real Madrid, all their matches are
important and they always need everybody.

"Even when they play the bottom team in the league, they'll be up against a side
treating it as their game of the season. So your club needs to have a set-up that
understands that we need a rest."

'It helps us because the players know they have to perform.'

[2] Becks on pressure
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, March 30, 2002 by tb:
'The problem is that if I go for a match without a good free-kick or without passing a
ball 40 yards to feet, I am off my game,' added Beckham.

'But I've got used to that. You've got to take the good with the bad and the
performance against Greece was a great one for me.

'People judge me on that and want the same every game. It's physically not possible.

'But I would still rather have those sorts of expectations from people than any other.
I like people believing I can produce a goal like that or a cross for someone to
score.

'I have always been under pressure - as a Manchester United player you expect to be
under pressure. I don't mind that at all.'

'That's upsetting, I've never thought that. It has never even entered my mind.

'I admit that I have got used to the England captaincy quicker than I thought I would
and I'm glad that it has gone that way.

'But I'm not more comfortable with England than I am with United. Not at all.'
