"I feel only sympathy for Seaman. It was a great goal but he is one of the greatest
goalkeepers in the world. He has a lot of experience and it is sad to see this happen.
I know he is quite old now and that it is probably the end of his international
career. And I'm sure that this is not the way that he would have wanted to bow out."

"You have to take it by the scruff of the neck sometimes and try to throw more bodies
forward, try and affect them and hurt them in the last 20 minutes of the game. But
when they went to 10 men we seemed to let the game drift on and on. We didn't seem to
commit bodies. We should have been going for it at the endand throwing bodies into the
box and throwing the ball in the box. Sometimes it's easy to say that, but I just
thought we could have committedmore men forward especially after the sending off"

[15] Becks reflects
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, June 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
"We didn't take advantage of the situation as we should have done. But that's the way
things go. We're all proud of ourselves and as a captain I'm proud of the team. This
is a very young team and it's come a long way in a short space of time. Technically,
Brazilians have always been brilliant - that's been proved over so many years. But I
feel every player in this team is comfortable on the ball just like every one of their
players. It just wasn't our day. The plus points are that we were in a quarter-final
of a World Cup where people said we would go out in the first round - that we wouldn't
even get through the Group of Death. We're a young team. We'll come back from this. Of
course, there's disappointment - everyone of us is disappointed. But me as a captain
and Mr. Eriksson as a manager, we're all proud of the whole 23 players - not just the
11 who were out there. It's been a squad thing all the way through this tournament
until the final whistle."

Have to say Becks' behaviour at the final whistle was Captain Marvel like - praising
Carlos and trying to gee up the spirits of Seaman and co. And just why are the
Brazilians such an attraction to the girls? because they can lob Seaman from 30 yards.

David Seaman has issued a public apology for his mistake - saying sorry to the
'people'. His right of course but this is the same David Seaman who has been
criticised left, right and cnetre by the fourth estate covering the event in Japan as
he's not done ont interview for the media. Rumours that it was due to a lucrative
diary to be published after the World Cup is over were rife and as we told you in RN a
while back, Seaman has a supposed famous saying when the press ask him for quote: "You
get nowt for owt". Apparently that might be Yorkie speak for show me da money.

[11] An American Red Perspective
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, June 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
I burned the midnight oil (literally) to watch England-Brazil on ESPN. Watching the
Cup on American tv is quite an adventure, as the commentary is amusing for how
elemental it is. Notable in this particular broadcast was the incessant sniping of
Tommy "Gobshite" Smyth, who is excellent at pointing out how poorly England play but
is equally adept at overlooking quality football. Smyth also often broadcasts the
Champions League games on ESPN and is notoriously ABU. This was true again today, as
he aimed the blame for Rivaldo's goal squarely at Our David. "You can blame that one
on Beckham. Jumping out of the way of that collision led directly to Ronaldhino's
run." Certainly Becks would like to have that one to do over again, but I was quite
certain that I saw Ronaldhino run through at least four other Ingerlund defenders.
Was Smyth looking to make Becks the
scapegoat again? Luckily for him Semen showed that all things Arse are truly
worthless and will undoubtedly take the fall.

While I'm sorry to see England go out (mostly because I was looking for some variety
in the Final), I'm glad the danger is over for Becks' foot and that Scholes and Butty
don't have to work themselves to death until just before training resumes. Another
quarter final exit for England, though, must mean a Treble is on the horizon for
United!

Cheers, Jeff

[3] Guardian on Rio rumours
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, June 22, 2002 by bar-knee:
'Is he or isn't he? The Rio Ferdinand to Old Trafford story rumbles on like a
steamroller with indigestion. Leeds apparently put a clause in Rio's contract that
said he would not be allowed to join another Premiership side, and after consulting
Ceefax, they realised that Manchester United fitted the description to the letter.
Now, The Sun say this has weed on United's cornflakes, and given the usual suspects -
Milan, Inter, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona - cause to check out the West
Yorkshire Yellow Pages in their local libraries. The Mirror, meanwhile, say Leeds are
demanding Rio let them know where, in the words of Basement Jaxx, his head's at.

Harry Harris, now of the Express, is having none of it, though. The move, he insists,
is in the bag, with Lord Ferg poised to make a formal offer just as soon as England's
World Cup bid is over. Over to you, Sir Alex.'

A top Red and occasional RN contributor is taking part in a sponsored charity bike
ride to the Eiffel Tower, Paris starting
on 24 July and lasting for four days. That's 285 miles at an average of 70 miles a
day! Sore arse guaranteed. It's in aid of a charity called Action Research, which
funds medical research into a load of conditions such as premature birth. One in 30
babies born has some kind of medical problem to contend with. And one in ten of the
general population has a disability which seriously affects their lives. Action
Research supports top class medical research projects which have a very real chance of
making a difference to the lives of men, women and children everywhere. End of spiel!

It's a good cause and a great challenge for a mid-thirties, prematurely grey,
overweight Manchester United fanatic to undertake. He's to raise a minimum of a grand
and is half-way there at the moment.

If any Reds can help, he would be grateful to receive any donations, payable to Action

Pierluigi Collina, on his most memorable football moment : 26th of May 1999

"That match is perhaps my greatest memory as a referee. I will always remember it for

[9] Semen Mess

Ingerlund out - pass the damp cloth.

If RED NEWS was not such an upstanding organ we might be tempted to take cheap shots
for easy laughs and point out the mess that Semen has made in his own box. But luckily
we are strong enough to resist the temptation. However, after the balls up he made of
Ronaldhino's free kick it has to be said that Semen has left a dirty stain on the face
of England's campaign. And a nasty taste in the mouth too. Difficult to swallow I
know. In fact, many Ingerlund fans couldn't stomach it.

So that's two World Cup's running that Ingerlund have been let down by Semen cock-ups.

France 98 - Semen once again made a mess in his own box when he needlessly gave away
that penalty against Argentina. And then of course he failed in the penalty shootout -
although he was helped out by Batty boy and Charlie. But weren't we all told it was
David Beckham's fault for being the victim of a w@nk refereeing decision? Something
which has been recognised belatedly by all the ABU media ...... now he's the media's
darling ..... temporarily.

Anyway - enough childish ejaculatory innuendo.

Mind you - I never thought anyone would be able to lob Semen from 30 yards. Most
impressive.

[3] West Brom game not live
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, June 21, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From their official site

'ALBION’S opening day trip to Manchester United will NOT be shown live on Sky.

Newspaper reports had fuelled speculation the Baggies’ first top flight game for 16
years would be put back either 24 or 48 hours for screening.

But Hawthorns secretary John Evans has confirmed the satellite giants have overlooked
Albion’s Theatre of Dreams showdown, which remains a Saturday, August 17 fixture.

Instead, the club’s first TV date will be the visit of Blackburn Rovers, which has
been put back 48 hours to Monday, September 30.
It means Albion's Worthington Cup second round game will almost certainly be played on
the following Wednesday.
The Baggies' trip to Tottenham has also been switched for the cameras to Sunday,
December 8.

Meanwhile, with Albion unlikely to be granted more than 3,000 tickets for their
mouth-watering Old Trafford opener, the club are considering beaming the game back.

The Baggies are set to become the first club in the country to install big screens in
a widescreen format and are planning to show several away matches next season.

New chairman Jeremy Peace said: “We understand away tickets are going to be thin on
the ground but in high demand.

“So, subject to getting the relevant permission, we plan to utilise our new screens by
beaming back a number of matches - if there is sufficient demand.”

Posted Friday, June 21, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From Ananova

'The draw for this season's Champions League campaign will take place on August 30.

The teams will be selected for the group stage of the competition before Uefa's Super
Cup final in Monaco.

Arsenal and Liverpool go straight into the draw, while Manchester United, Newcastle
and Celtic will have to win their qualifying games before being put into the draw.

As last year, the first round proper will feature eight groups of four teams, with the
second round reducing to four groups of four before the knock-out games begin at the
quarter-final stage.

The final takes place at Old Trafford next May.'

Under the spreading chestnut tree...sorry, wrong script.

We'll have to wait to see exactly what and if there is any big news on July 5th to
come, basically we weren't leaving any details out with yesterday's story as we said
all that we knew. This of course has led to some intense speculation as to what, if
any, shock big news there could be to come. Our own take is that surely it must mean a
big signing on the way. We have done some delving and one source within OT has said he
senses optimism at United that Rio is our way bound, and we've now more chance of
getting him than not. We shall see.

"There are a number of reasons why we are going over to China. There are a lot of
opportunities from a merchandising point of view. Obviously as the club grows - and
you want it to grow as fast as possible - you have got to look for all the benefits
that come from commercial opportunities not just the United Kingdom but throughout
the world. China is one of those places that we need to look at, so we will be looking
at merchandising, but we are also talking to a number of television companies out
there because the way that the TV deals will change over the next few years we need
to be at the front of that changing market and make sure we have got the knowledge to
react as fast as anyone else. It would not be correct to say that Jihai Sun is the
engine driver behind what we are doing. We have been looking at the Chinese market
for some time but the fact that Jihai Sun is here is obviously an added benefit. We
will not be going there to talk about what we can do with Jihai !
Sun but to talk about Manchester City. The companies out there will be looking at
the brand that is Manchester City. We have to build everything around the football
club, we are really going out there to sell the club and not the players."
