Air Surcharge: Travellers face ticket surcharges of US$1.25 (NZ$3.64) after aviation insurance underwriters increased premiums yesterday in the wake of the World Trade Center bombing. Air New Zealand confirmed that all travellers would have the price added to their fares from October 1. Australian airline Qantas also announced the hike. The move comes after the United States Government announced a US$5 billion (NZ$14.7 billion) package for American airlines suffering losses associated with the September 11 disaster. The airlines had asked for US$17.5 billion, but the package also promised a six-months terrorism risk insurance on domestic flights. Air New Zealand said insurance underwriters had the right to alter policies and increase premiums with only a week's notice. The increase would add about US$1.25 (NZ$3.64) to every fare. The cover was restricted to liability for death or injury to passengers on an aircraft - limited to US$2 billion (NZ$4.91 billion) on each occasion - and death or injury to third parties. It also covered property damage on the ground, capped at US$50 million for any one event. __END__
