1. TV Dilemma 2. Easter Hols ======================================================================== March 31st, 2002 1. TV Dilemma: An American 24 hour religious TV broadcaster, who offered to operate a free- to- air-service on Niue several years ago but was denied, is now planning to transit programs in the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands Television Board is holding an urgent meeting to discuss how a religious TV station was given permission to start operations without the board approving a license. The Eternity Broadcasting Network using programs from the US based Trinity Broadcasting Network -- with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alex Bartlett as chairperson -- opened its operations in Honiara last week. The growing influence of American Christian radio and TV stations in the Pacific Islands is of concern to some local mainstream churches. There also are concerns about the fund raising by some American Christian broadcasters. The Eternity Broadcasting Network is described as an interdenominational registered charitable trust in the Solomon Island operating the station on behalf of all Christian churches in the country.(PIR). 2. Easter Hols: Fine weather during the Easter holiday break brought out golfers for a sports club organised ambrose tournament at Fonuakula. Easter Sunday church services were well attended by worshippers in all villages around the island. High School students start holidays this week and nominations for the upcoming April 20 election close April 4. The Alliance of Independents and the Niue Peoples Party intensify their campaigning in a bid to gain majority support for their candidates. __END__
