i do not expect significant differences in speed on file based access between
cifs and nfs. you could eventually try block-based access via comstar-iscsi
(client included in vista).
more important is enough ram to serve streams from ram or to use a streaming
optimized (web-)server.
CIFS and NFS are completely different networked filesystem protocols. The CIFS
protocol has been a Microsoft proprietary format for a very long time. The
only way that non-windows machines could access Windows was via Samba which was
a clean-room reverse engineered implementation of CIFS. For
