Graham, thanks for the advice.
Several items to note:
- the gasket in the filter kit was a smaller diameter than the one I removed
- there was no washer between the filter and the spring when I removed the
filter cover.
Do you know the size of the washer that is supposed to be between spring

Ken, I don't know what's going on with the different size gaskets. Use the
old one if the new one doesn't fit - make sure you have the right filter -
nmae, brand and model #? And again for what bike?
The washer often goes missing at oil filter changers because the washer
sticks to the filter
Hello,
Changing the oil on my new 84 650.
Is there a seal of any kind on the oil drain plug?
I did not see one when I removed the plug.
There are 2 o rings in the oil filter bag, one for the filter housing and
the other goes where?
Thanks.
Ken

You received this message because you are
Drain plug may haver a copper or other metal washer to seal it but no
rubber seal.
One O ring is as you said for the filter housing, the other goes
inside the housing on the bolt, sealing the bolt and the housing. Be
sure there is a metal washer between the spring and the filter, Graham
