Along with the side stand switch it stops you putting the bike in gear with
side stand down and allows you to satrt teh bike with the stand up and in
gear ... if it starts playing up it is a veritable pain in the ass ;)

Not per-se... It is just a safety. Some Jeep guys (and even bikers as well)
bypass the clutch safety so the can bump the vehicle forward with the
starter. Don't recommend bypassing it, but it is possible.
