I bought an 82 650sc last year and drove it for a while before I noticed
the leak (small at first) became very large. Took it to the shop and they
said the automatic valve had gone and he ran the fuel straight from the
tank to the carbs. It still leaked after that and didnt really solve any of
the problems (poor power above 80Km/H) so this winter I took it apart and
put in new needles and rings. I also bought another fuel valve and petcock
(old petcock was toast and the mechanic not only ran the hose straight, he
took the original valve), however the new (to me) valve doesnt work well
either (poor spring I think) and the carbs still leak. Correction, there is
a fuel leak but its possible it is happening because the float bowls are
filling and overflowing. I see things that say change the o ring in the
float needle, but I dont have any. I guess after all that, my question is
does the 82 have o rings or gaskets that seal the needle/fuel once the
floats are raised? The needles that came with the kit look exactly the same
as the old ones so now Im confused as to why they just keep filling with
fuel.
