Why do you have to change your oil at 2,500?

I have to change my oil at 2,500. I have a little smoke coming out of the
left side and an oil leak from the valve cover gasket. I keep a piece of
cardboard in my garage to soak up the oil. I left the bike parked at the
airport for a week. There was about a 2 inch circle of oil under the
33,629 on my 83 550SC :)

I am just about to roll over 54,000 miles. How much oil do you burn? or
leak at 88k? I'm starting to lay down a little bit of a smoke screen.
