[Nix-dev] change in HEAD can render a system unbootable

Since this is something of a hair-on-fire issue, I wanted to bring it up on-list as well as in the bug tracker to make sure it gets some exposure. As reported in https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/12949, there's a recent change in HEAD that requires some significant effort to recover from.

[Nix-dev] How to add tools to a nix-shell environment for haskell development?

In developing a haskell library, I would like to be able to maintain both a default.nix (that represents the library dependencies, etc.), and then have a shell.nix that adds things to it in order to build a development environment---specifically some build tools, hasktags, hlint, etc.
