[Nix-dev] Nixos wiki project

2017-05-09 Thread Mic92
As the official wiki is now finally part of the history:
https://nixos.org/nixos/wiki.html,
we have started our own community wiki:

  https://github.com/nixos-users/wiki/wiki

It is at the moment editable by every GitHub user and
we use our IRC channel #krebs to review and track changes.

We invite you to dump your knowledge and useful snippets,
if you found out something cool about Nix/NixOS.

Cheers Mic92.

Re: [Nix-dev] [NixOS] How to incorporate my Bash script in configuration.nix?

2017-05-09 Thread Peter Hoeg

Hi,

  > The proper way to do this is to set up modaliases

  Could you please elaborate further?

the alias in the line below depends on the exact PID and VID of your device so
you may need to adjust it:

 boot.kernelModules = [ "rt2800usb" ];
 boot.extraModprobeConfig = ''
   alias usb:v0B05p17E8d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*in* rt2800usb
   install rt2800usb ${pkgs.kmod}/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install rt2800usb && echo
0x0B05 0x17E8 >/sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id
 '';

This is from:

I know own a graphics card nor a NVIDIA chipset, but you will have to at
least post the logs on the journald/xsession.errors/dmesg . Probably a
module isn't being loaded by the kernel ?

[Nix-dev] nvidia proprietary / i7 notebook - does not start

2017-05-09 Thread Marc Weber
Desktop: Everything is fine, the way it should

Laptop:
  lspci: 03:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 940MX] (rev
a2)
  => Ubuntu -> fine
  => Nixos -> black -> then blinking cursor, no (EE) lines in X log

I tried copying the relevant part from X.org defining drivers, screens,
monitors from Ubuntus config to no avail. Also setting BusID
AllowEmptyConfig and such didn't seem to work.

Has anybody experienced the same issue/ maybe even solved it?

I agree, I think it would be best to keep the old commands as-is, and
slowly add functionality to the new command. I think that mapping the
old commands into the new one just creates a second inconsistent method
to call them that we will also have to eventually discourage.

Doing it this way keeps only two interfaces, the old insonsistent ones
(nix-*), and the new consistent and well thought out one (nix).

To me it seems push-triggered stuff is mainly for CI, and there's e.g.
Hydra for that. You could probably implement implement push-triggered
scripts easily - CGI or something.

Often pull seems enough, especially as nix itself allows distributing
builds among multiple machines, even combining different platforms.

Thanks for all the replies. Seems like I didn't miss anything obvious.

My current plan is to try gitlab with my own runner, which has a 'shell
executor' option.
https://docs.gitlab.com/runner/executors/shell.html
That looks like to be exactly what I need for nix based builds.

Is this use-case of nix so uncommon (push-triggered builds)? Do most people go
for Hydra?

Thanks!

I'm not really involved in the development of Nix, but I don't think the
old interface will go away with 1.12 already. So far it's been a
separate "nix" command that didn't clash with the rest, I think, and I
don't know any reason to remove the old CLI too quickly.

I'm personally reconciled with the fact that we can't really solve all
use cases of all (potential) users anytime soon, and I don't think I/we
have resources to even try to solve them all.

The bigger project the more tickets, especially if the community is
active. For example, Debian has over 80k tickets open and they don't
seem to be in any bad state really https://www.debian.org/Bugs/ Our
tickets/packages ratio is most likely much lower as well.

It is for free? AFAIK our current CDN isn't free at all but paid by
LogicBlox. If you mean CloudFlare, on their site they state the free
plan doesn't sound applicable to this case, but perhaps I misunderstand it.

Here's what I have in my /etc/nixos/configuration.nix:

  hardware = {
bluetooth.enable = true;
pulseaudio = {
  enable = true;
  package = pkgs.pulseaudioFull;
};
  };

I installed pavucontrol and pamixer using nix-env, both work
properly. Also, a bluetooth speaker worked out of the box with this
configuration.

I couldn't get paprefs working, however. (I tried, but not quite really
hard.)

What happens if you install pavucontrol and pamixer in a user
environment?

[Nix-dev] PulseAudio

2017-05-09 Thread Mark Gardner
I am having trouble getting PulseAudio to work. I added the following to
configuration.nix, executed nixos-rebuild switch, and rebooted:

  hardware.pulseaudio = {
enable = true;
package = pkgs.pulseaudioFull;
  };
  environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
pamixer
paprefs
pavucontrol
  ];

Executing pamixer gives "Connection error". pavucontrol also fails to
connect to the daemon. But it appears to be running:

$ ps aux | grep pulse
user   2720  0.1  0.0 492636 10516 ?Sl   12:34   0:04
/nix/store/k8q0bcyyy0x7r0s5l65njgjp6w14yzyz-pulseaudio-9.0/bin/pulseaudio
--start --log-target=syslog
user   2864  0.0  0.0 115656  5596 ?S12:34   0:00
/nix/store/k8q0bcyyy0x7r0s5l65njgjp6w14yzyz-pulseaudio-9.0/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper

Trying mpv gives "ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable
to connect: Connection refused" which indicates that the daemon is refusing
to connect but I do get sound anyway.

I tried to go to the wiki https://nixos.org/wiki/PulseAudio but it has been
shut down and says I should check the manual but the manual has nothing on
PulseAudio. (I know that the community is trying to move the documentation
to the manual but removing access to the wiki before the manual is complete
yanks the rug out of under people.)

Can someone give me a step by step process for getting PulseAudio working
properly? (Longer term, I want to get my Bluetooth headphones to work so if
you happen to have that also...)

2017-05-09 Thread Peter Hoeg

Hi,

I would have gone to systemd.services. Slightly uglier looking (bigger
attrset), but should run after the kernel has loaded its modules. I'd
say it would be ideal to have it be "PartOf = networking.target"
and/or "Before = dhcpd.service" (or whatever networking thingy you
use).

Actually, that will not do the trick either if the device isn't plugged
in yet.

The proper way to do this is to set up modaliases

Due the recent inclusion of broadcom-bt-firmware in enableAllFirmware,
it was required to set `nixpkgs.config.allowUnfree` to obtain the full
list. To make this dependency more explicit an assertion is added and an
alternative option `enableRedistributalFirmware` is provided to only
obtain firmware with an license allowing redistribution.

  syncthing: correct path for systemd units

The systemd files included with syncthing are "library" and not
"configuration" units, so they should be placed in lib/systemd
rather than etc/systemd, so that they can be customised by creating
unit files in etc/. This also corresponds to how syncthing's own
build script installs them.

Re: [Nix-dev] Need any mirror in Asia?

2017-05-09 Thread Frank

Why don't we host the system on IPFS?
( https//ipfs.io )

It would be nice to use URL's like: ipfs://jhgwybmjhgsd/my_file but is
would fit nicely in nixos

Greetings,

How I see the setup, it would be a HTTP reverse proxy with caching
enabled. That way only the accessed files are transferred over,
avoiding unnecessary traffic. One downside is that it requires a bit
of tuning and monitoring to make sure it's running efficiently. First
accesses to files are also doing the full round trip.

https://www.nginx.com/blog/nginx-caching-guide/ is a pretty good
example setup for nging, where upstream would be cache.nixos.org
 . A few things need to be turned, for example
the cache TTL should be much bigger than the 10min that they set.
Ideally all content-addressable files would never invalidate unless
the disk is full, in that case they should LRU.

Let me know if you need more details or if this enough to get going.

Thanks for sharing Daniel, I see another thread around my same topic

I'm happy to see such open discussion.

It seems they have some projects in the pipe to improve the delivery.
But I will be happy to support in a short or long term (secondary
cache
layer,...)

I'm currently having a 100M, but I'm thinking of upgrading to 1G.
(Just
a new offer, more expansive of course but for a reasonable price
still.
IMO)

[Nix-dev] How to implement fetchMaven as pure function ?

2017-05-09 Thread Volth
There are already two versions in nixpkgs ("fetchMaven" and
"fetchMavenArtifact") which are just wrappers for "fetchurl".

Basicaly "fetchMaven" is merely a function giving argument
"org.scala-lang:scala-compiler:2.11.11" produces a derivation by
downloading two files

https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/scala-lang/scala-compiler/2.11.11/scala-compiler-2.11.11.pom

https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/scala-lang/scala-compiler/2.11.11/scala-compiler-2.11.11.jar

into $out/share/java/.

Besides the obvious hacky ways, how would it be possible to implement
"fetchMaven" in a way that the output path in nixstore depend only on
the argument ?

Only on the string "org.scala-lang:scala-compiler:2.11.11" and not on
curl version or buildScript's evolution (e.g. it could download PGP
signature and validate it)

Then the jar files would be easily discoverable by the external tools
doing the same calculation.

Re: [Nix-dev] NixOS and nix 1.12

2017-05-09 Thread Tomasz Czyż
Actually, wouldn't be great if we transfer that functions over a time
rather than doing big bang?

I was thinking recently that probably simple bash wrapper aggregating
various commands under common executable would be good start. In that case
we can then replace functions one by one with new implementation or
reogranize it. What do you think?

Hi,

  I have made my USB WiFi to work,
  but I have to call this script whenever I restart the computer.

you can do it this way:

system.activationScripts = {
 rt2800usb = {
   text = ''
 echo "0b05 17e8" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id
   '';

[Nix-dev] [NixOS] How to incorporate my Bash script in configuration.nix?

2017-05-09 Thread Strahinja Popovic
Hi everyone,

I have made my USB WiFi to work,
but I have to call this script whenever I restart the computer.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
echo "0b05 17e8"|sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id

What is correct way to make this part of configuration.nix?

Cheers,

This is a plugin of sorts for your `.zshrc` that can add status
information about the current git repository to your prompt. By
default it uses a python script and is thus easy on the dependencies
and not really worth packaging. But there's also a Haskell
implementation. I set it up sometime back, but then it died when the
libgmp version it was compiled with disappeared in a garbage
collection. So I decided that the Haskell version of zsh-git-prompt
might be worth packaging after all.
