Re: [Nix-dev] Overriding python with python3 in vim_configurable.customize

2017-04-04 Thread Ben Zhang
Thanks everyone for your input! I ended up using zimbatm’s method and made a
python3 version of `vim_configurable` using `vimUtils.makeCustomizable`. Now
it’s working great!

My current `vim-config/default.nix`:

```
{ pkgs }:
let
  my_plugins = import ./plugins.nix { inherit (pkgs) vimUtils fetchFromGitHub;
};
  configurable_nix_path =
"${}/pkgs/applications/editors/vim/configurable.nix";
  my_vim_configurable = with pkgs; vimUtils.makeCustomizable (callPackage
configurable_nix_path {
    inherit (darwin.apple_sdk.frameworks) CoreServices Cocoa Foundation
CoreData;
    inherit (darwin) libobjc cf-private;
    features = "huge"; # one of  tiny, small, normal, big or huge
    lua = pkgs.lua5_1;
    gui = config.vim.gui or "auto";
    python = python3;
    # optional features by flags
    flags = [ "python" "X11" ];
  });
in with pkgs; my_vim_configurable.customize {
  name = "vim";
  vimrcConfig = {
    customRC = ''
      syntax on
      “...
    '';
    vam.knownPlugins = vimPlugins // my_plugins;
    vam.pluginDictionaries = [
      { names = [
        "ctrlp"
        # ...
      ]; }
    ];
  };
}
```

The problem with /run/current-system is
that it’s nixOS only.
The package should work on e.g. Darwin as well.

So probably use `/usr/bin/env dmenu_run` and similar.

Re: [Nix-dev] Chromium extensions

2017-04-04 Thread ben...@gmail.com
Are you talking about the desktop app launchers that show up in the
kde/gnome/whatever application menus? Because yeah, that totally happens.
The issue is that chrome writes the app's .destop file (at
~/.local/share/applications/chrome-.desktop) with the full
/nix/store path to the non-wrapped google-chrome executable, which changes
every time the derivation gets built. If the old google-chrome executable
is still there _and_ you already have chrome running, it will dispatch the
launch to the running chrome. If the old executable is still there but
chrome is not running, it will launch the outdated version of chrome. If
the old executable is gone, your desktop xdg launchers are now broken.

One quick workaround is to run:

sed -i 's%/nix/store.*/google-chrome%google-chrome-stable%'
~/.local/share/applications/chrome-*.desktop

That will fix up all the existing launchers so they should work across
Chrome updates, but newly-created ones will still get the hardcoded
/nix/store path, and I think chrome also rewrites those .desktop files from
time to time, probably when there are new versions of the extensions.

I'm not sure what the right long-term fix is for this issue. If anybody
knows how to convince chrome to use an executable name other than its full
binary path, that would be ideal. Otherwise, maybe a hook to run at user
login that fixes up any existing launchers?

- Ben

(sorry for sending html email - it's to avoid gmail inserting newlines in
the middle of that sed command)

Worth noting: Running `nixos-rebuild switch` is insufficient to make
this fix take effect. You may need to run `systemctl restart
docker.socket` or reboot before the permissions on /run/docker.sock

Another potential option would be using package overrides [1] to pass
python3 as python to the vim package — something like

   packageOverrides = pkgs: {
  vim = pkgs.vim.override { python = pkgs.python3 };
   };

Maybe the OPs question was not about the same person regularly
starting flamewars but about flamewars about the same topic started
regularly by different people each time?

I don't think a rule of 'flame systemd once and you are out' would do
the community any good, even if the threshold is higher. After all a
critical reminder can make you rethink if you are still on the right
path. Altough I personally tend to shrug off these "I hate
systemd"-topics and notice that another half a year has passed already.

Or "lightd" will be forced upon them? - sorry, couldn't resist.

I hate to be that guy, but I think this is really pointing towards a
need for some form of Code of Conduct - if you want to go down the route
of someone making such decisions. I say that, because my immediate
reaction to your comment is: when do we ban? Is it literally for saying
"fuck systemd"? I assume it's not. So it requires a decision process.

Whether or not there is a need for a Code of Conduct, I would like at
least a transparent process into bans.

> Is there a technical possibility for this?

In the meantime, your mail client should have the ability to bin any

mail from particular people, which might be enough to let you carry on
without the noise.

I don't think banning would work. If someone *really* wants to annoy us
here we can just click himself another email address every other day.

My usual approach is ignoring such threads. We could additionally link
to some sort of faq entry explaining NixOS' usage of systemd and by this
get rid of long debates.

I think I'm fine with any approach. However, I fear that a discussion on
ban-critia might be more noise than the systemd debate. Plus, banning
people can casts a bad shadow on the community.

  network-link-*.service: Set stopIfChanged = false

This reduces the time window during which IP addresses are gone during
switch-to-configuration. A complication is that with stopIfChanged =
true, preStop would try to delete the *new* IP addresses rather than
the old one (since the preStop script now runs after the switch to the
new configuration). So we now record the actually configured addresses
in /run/nixos/network/addresses/. This is more robust in
any case.

Re: [Nix-dev] Overriding python with python3 in vim_configurable.customize

From the source code, it doesn’t seem to accept a python argument
(https://github.com/nicknovitski/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/misc/vim-plugins/vim-utils.nix#L291-L295).
 Is there another way to override `python` with `python3`
(https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/8125#issuecomment-169471686)?

Thanks,

Very strange, since it definitely builds (and works) just fine on my

Normally these people vent once and then stay quiet;
if someone starts flamewars on a regular basis
we should warn them first, and on repetition ban.

So far that hasn’t happened yet, right?
And maybe these folks will see the light someday. :)

  rtags: fix for clang/libc++ 4

This also fixes a missing header in the SDK that rtags needs to work
properly. The underlying cause is that C++ headers got shuffled around a
lot in libc++ 3.8 (I believe) and became more standards-compliant, which
led to a lot of C-compatible passthrough header files being added to it
like math.h, which defines some C++-compatible versions of standard
functions like signbit, while #include_next'ing the system math.h. In
this case, including the SDK was stuffing another math.h in front of the
libc++ shim, which led to all sorts of mysterious failures.

Can you elaborate on that? I had tried it before, but I have two problems:
 -

[Nix-dev] Banning people from the mailinglist?

2017-04-04 Thread Matthias Beyer
We had the systemd conversation endless times now.

We all know that some people don't like systemd and other ones like
it.

Can we just ban the (non-constructive) "fuck systemd" people? I
mean... nobody benefits from this kind of behaviour and it creates
frustration all over the place. Nobody gets happy with these kind of
messages.

How to deal with this? I propose one "Please leave us alone with your
hate, we know about the concerns and blah, but please let it be" and
after that banning the user.

Is there a technical possibility for this?

Re: [Nix-dev] Trying to compile palemoon with gcc49

config.nix is applied to all channels you use and also even to
"non-channel" nix-build invocations. You can often choose the channel,
e.g. nix-env -iA yourChannelName.palemoon - note that yourChannelName is
the identifier that *you* chose for the channel URL

BTW, I recommend you to consider switching from 16.09, as that's
probably going into unsupported mode at the end of April.

I switched it on unstable/master and 17.03.

[Nix-dev] Chromium extensions

2017-04-04 Thread Judson Lester
I've found that every time I update Chromium, all my extensions get ...
lost? Their icons become puzzle pieces, and their behavior is erratic. Is
there a fix for this, or an easy way to reinstall them all?

No, I restarted it many times and it retried many times - I could always
see the (partial) build log during the build, but it disappears when it
ends so I can't see how it finishes.
