Partly this is understanding the split between Nix, Nixpkgs, and NixOS.
You might not actually be rebuilding your changes to nixpkgs. This part
of the manual explains this somewhat:

http://nixos.org/nixos/manual/index.html#sec-getting-sources

So, you may have to do:

# nixos-rebuild switch -I nixpkgs=/my/sources/nixpkgs

and hope everything builds and nothing breaks (if it does you can always
do a rollback)

I just pinged @edwtjo who did the initial work on the Kodi plugins.
Hopefully he can at least provide some tips. Not everyone’s quick to
respond, sadly.

Yeah there's so many issues in Nixpkgs it's very easy to get lost. If
there's no Nix developers using Kodi + Xbox360 it’s fairly likely it
will get broken.

Hi Matthew,

I did try it, it did compile and install, kodi gets run by
displaymanager as user black so I guess thats enough?

But it neither does work nor do I find the plugin or even the category
for it.

I didnt find the time to upload it yet in a proper way, but did it as
gist:

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/25490

The main problem I have to debug that is that I dont even know if I have
nix problems or if this plugin does fix the problem. So I cant just use
the normal make install, and if that solves the issue seperately do the
packaging.

So its very hard to see what the problem is. Not to mention user vs
system packet installations.

I dont ever really understand how the plugin system of kodi works.

Well again I try to find the time to upload my changes as branch. Is
there no maintainer of the kodi package?

I mean the bug is open since 4 5 days, and I did not even get a notice
that somebody have seen the bugreport, or is assigned or anything.

Stefan

[Nix-dev] github triggered builds

2017-05-08 Thread Harmen
Hi,

I'm trying to see how I can make my build processes easier with nix. So far
it's going pretty good and it's fun, although there was a lot of searching
online for scattered documents.

Want I want to do (as the first thing to change to nix in production) is to
port the building of some docker images I use for testing. The idea is to
have docker images build, tagged with their branch they come from, when someone
pushes something. The building and pushing an sich work. The .nix files live in
the repo, and with a `make docker` the image is build and uploaded. I'm very
happy to be able to build docker images without actually having to use docker
;)

So, what would be the recommended way to trigger the building process? I'm
currently using drone.io, but that works with containers. It works with nix,
when I give it the nixos/nix docker image, but building a node project takes
about 5 minutes, and drags in way too much from cache.nixos.org. I tried to
have it make a local nix binary-cache, but there are some problems there, but
drone also just doesn't fit the problem nicely. Nix solves the problem of
versioning so much nicer than containers that I would prefer to use something
simpler. Hydra could work, but I'm a bit intimidated by that, and would like to
have something simpler for now.

The LT;DR: question: is there a simple nix based build system which can be
triggered via git{hub,lab} hooks?

Thanks!

Re: [Nix-dev] Need any mirror in Asia?

How I see the setup, it would be a HTTP reverse proxy with caching enabled.
That way only the accessed files are transferred over, avoiding unnecessary
traffic. One downside is that it requires a bit of tuning and monitoring to
make sure it's running efficiently. First accesses to files are also doing
the full round trip.

https://www.nginx.com/blog/nginx-caching-guide/ is a pretty good example
setup for nging, where upstream would be cache.nixos.org . A few things
need to be turned, for example the cache TTL should be much bigger than the
10min that they set. Ideally all content-addressable files would never
invalidate unless the disk is full, in that case they should LRU.

Let me know if you need more details or if this enough to get going.

  Add "nix edit" command

This is a little convenience command that opens the Nix expression of
the specified package. For example,

  nix edit nixpkgs.perlPackages.Moose

opens in $EDITOR (at the
right line number for some editors).

This requires the package to have a meta.position attribute.

By now I’m pretty sure the nix 1.11 networking code
is a bit flaky at times, especially the timeout & retry logic.

I heard it was rewritten for 1.12, is that right?

Re: [Nix-dev] Need any mirror in Asia?

2017-05-08 Thread Karibu
Thanks for sharing Daniel, I see another thread around my same topic
("still waiting for https://cache.nixos.org after 5 seconds..."). So
I'm happy to see such open discussion.

It seems they have some projects in the pipe to improve the delivery.
But I will be happy to support in a short or long term (secondary cache
layer,...)

I'm currently having a 100M, but I'm thinking of upgrading to 1G. (Just
a new offer, more expansive of course but for a reasonable price still.
IMO)

Ensure that bin/scmp_sys_resolver doesn't have $TMPDIR in its RPATH.

I can't reproduce the issue reported in

a wrapper script. It seems to work fine without.

I'm a member of the community. I have no special powers. What I've
written here is generally applicable to many open source projects. I'm
not a gate keeper.

Yes, Russia blocked Cloudfront for a bit.

You're welcome to set up out-of-band, third party infrastructure for
yourself and anyone you convince to use it. There is no reason you
can't.

 - For a read-through cache, the system must just send the Host
 header.
 - For an automatic cache, there are instructions on this ML about
fetching all the paths from a channel version. I believe you'll find
 them when Russia blocked Cloudfront.

IMO these aren't very high bars.

However, my preference is to solve the problem for all users by default.

If we go with either of these solutions (or any other), offering it to
all our users officially requires real work around configuration,
long-term support and maintenance, debugging, and tooling. To convince
the project as a whole to go that route, we need...

Without specific data on why things are performing poorly, you're
correct: it is not a problem that can be debugged and fixed.

I've put this script together to simplify the more complicated process
provided by upstream.

By collecting information about what is going wrong, it helps build a
case. Right now we see a small handful of people periodically
complaining vaguely about Cloudfront performance.

I don't want people to have a bad experience. The only way I know how to
help is to convert vague complaints to specific complaints via
diagnostic data that can be used to solve the problem. Only by building
a strong case of documented problems with our current mechanism are we
likely to get enough people interested to collectively move to a
different solution.

Hi,

Unfortunately, these problems are very hard to diagnose. More often than
not, the issue is between the user and AWS.

I have a tool that provides information to help Amazon debug the
problem:

https://gist.github.com/grahamc/df1bb806eb3552650d03eef7036a72ba

If you run this when when you are having issues, please send the results
to me and I'll collect them.

Cloudfront is an extremely stable platform (along the axis of
"availability") to build off of. They promise a minimum of 99.9%[0] of
all requests will be correctly serviced, while simultaneously providing
edge-caching to improve performance in certain regions.

Our Cloudfront distribution is backed by S3, a similar promise of 99.9%
availability[1]. S3 provides additional guarantees, like its durability
(99.9% [2].)

Our cloudfront distribution sees almost almost 100,000 unique users each
month, each downloading hundreds or thousands of NARs and narinfo files.
At the size of the cache (many TBs) and traffic it sees, these numbers
aren't an easy feat.

Re: [Nix-dev] Extend wrapper created with makeWrapper

2017-05-08 Thread Guillaume Maudoux (Layus)
wrapProgram is a thin wrapper around makeWrapper, both defined in
make-wrapper.sh

All they do is exactly the same as the custom wrapper make below.

You can nlook for uses of makeWrapper / wrapProgram across nixpkgs.
kdeWrapper, wrapQtProgram & co are refinements of this concept. They
call wrapProgram with extra, custom settings for resp. KDE, Qt, GNOME &
co. To avoid stacking wrappers, they sometimes provide an extension
mechanism. kdeWrapper does not.

For now, I would keep the custom hack. It is the simplest solution.

https://github.com/abbradar/nixpkgs/blob/124e5dd3eb9e3e8fe322d3c62e4501b2043ac898/pkgs/build-support/setup-hooks/make-wrapper.sh

 are using wrapQtProgam
and wrapPythonPrograms. In both cases there is a way to extend the
created wrapper, you can set `makeWrapperArgs` for wrapPythonPrograms,
or you can pass extra arguments to wrapQtProgram. But okular uses
kdeWrapper, which doesn't seem to offer a way to extend the created
wrapper. Is it really not possible to extend the wrapper created with
kdeWrapper, or am I missing something?

Hi,

I want to override an existing package to use it locally. I would
like to just set an environment variable before the program is
executed, but the derivation is using `wrapProgram`, so there is
already a wrapper for the program. Is possible to override the
derivation to add another environment variable to the wrapper?
The derivation I want to modify is okular

)

Thanks in advance,
José Luis
