Is it actually possible to run Nixops on OSX? A client of mine wasn't able to
build EC2 machines on his OS X laptop today during a demo.

Yes, and what I meant is it would be very easy to start calling it NixON
and start importing like
I think it is a great idea for these functions to return valid nix
expressions, and to be able to directly write them to a file. I also
really like the idea of creating a named subset only containing literal
values.

You may also find the executable has secret switches to enable automated
installation, google around and see what you might find. I don't recall
windows format switches, but even a `--help` equivalent might do the trick.

I could open source the module to do this if someone wanted me to, it is
fairly simple.

I've found myself confused by multiple projects using the same lang2nix
name, and big changes in format. One consistent complaint I have is the top
of the file usually says:

but having more information like a version number and a URL to the project

As far as I know, Nix has no way to gather statistics on how many people
are using different architectures. This makes questions like this a bit
awkward.
One person on IRC said they think they may have used it once. Does
anyone on this list use NixOS on i686? anyone on this list know anyone

Before now, PRs were being built using the nixpkgs release.nix.
As of
https://github.com/grahamc/hydra-prs/commit/df790c5c7f36bc0b0f033b1caf9c3188ddfa4065
all builds are being performed now on the NixOS release-combined.nix.
This means each push will trigger affected tests to run in
