Hello all, I'm Bennett Cyphers, staff technologist at EFF. For the last few months, we have been working with local grassroots advocates and infosec experts in Georgia to oppose S.B. 315, a bill that would expand the state's existing hacking laws. We believe it's an unnecessary, harmful overreach. Because of the vague definitions in the bill, we are concerned that it will chill independent security research. Further, the bill aims to legalize "hack back" measures which could harm innocent users, especially victims of malware whose devices have been appropriated by bad actors.
We are collecting signatures from cybersecurity specialists, technologists, computer scientists, academics, students, and others in the industry to request Gov. Nathan Deal veto this bill. Our letter is particularly designed for out-of-state individuals who wish to help the effort.
