[No Thirst Software] Re: Debt Quencher feature request?
On Jun 15, 2009, at 3:21 AM, Ben wrote: Hi, downloaded and purchased Debt Quencher last night - I'm really impressed with it and it has already shown me how I can be debt free in a relatively short amount of time. Thanks for the impressive package - I think I'll be looking into MoneyWell next! Hi Ben, Thanks! One thing I did note - I don't know whether this feature exists and I just haven't found it yet - most credit cards express your minimum payment as a percentage of your overall balance (e.g. 2%, 2.25%) or a minimum amount (e.g. £5), whichever is greater. DQ has a minimum payment column, but it requires that this be altered every month. Is it possible to set up a feature that adjusts the minimum payment based on these rules as a way of showing how long it would take to actually pay off your balance at the minimum rate? I've tried doing it myself in a spreadsheet but I couldn't figure out the interest functions to make it work properly. Debt Quencher was kept simple on purpose. I do know that there are rules for minimum balances and even fees for over limits but the goal was to keep the data entry as uncluttered as possible. If you really are going to pay only 2% of the balance, you will be paying for many, many years. Putting in a static amount is generous compared to the credit card company methods but it gives you a baseline still. I appreciate this is more of a kick up the backside feature designed to scare rather than aid towards actual meaningful debt reduction! Exactly. The other feature I was wondering about is balance transfer. As an example: Credit Card 1: 15.8% (1.313% per month) balance of £400, limit of £2000 Credit Card 2: 9.9% (0.793% per month, based on paying 10% of balance, else 14.9% APR) balance of £1050, limit of £1600 (yes, these are very close to my own figures!) I can transfer onto credit card 2, for 0% for 9 months, with a handling fee of 2.5% of the transferred balance up to a maximum of 90% of the credit limit of credit card 2. This would enable me to cancel card 1, and reduce interest payments massively, except I cannot transfer the full amount off card 2 for at least 1 month, otherwise I break the 90% limit. The other option is to pay off more on CC2, allowing me to perform that payment immediately. Whilst I can get just about work out the scenarios and benefits for myself on this one, as it is relatively simple, transfers like this are useful tools in debt management, and would be a great thing to preview the effect of in DQ. Messing with balances to pay off one card with another certainly is tricky. So are cash advances and balance transfers. They cause the payoff to require viewing multiple balances with different rates on the same card. You can split a single account (card) into multiple accounts with different interest rates to simulate this but again that gets complicated. What I generally suggest is to take the pessimistic interest rate (the higher one) and use that as your interest rate. You may save a bit of money swapping balances on cards or by paying just the purchase balance first but I've found that paying down each card is simple and effective also. Again, it is a complicated sort of calculation though, and I guess the timings of the offer rate and the handling fee etc. would make it awkward to program, and would detract from the simplicity of DQ. Just a thought! Thanks for the great software! I appreciate the thoughts and suggestions. I did use a program that could handle most of this prior to writing Debt Quencher but it was so complex (and then the company went out of business) that I decided to avoid that complexity as much as possible. Debt Quencher will probably get a few more features as long as I can keep the interface nearly as clean. Thanks. [No Thirst Software] Re: Request for Spending vs. Budget (Spending Plan) Amount Output Report
Hi Jason, More reports and views are coming, some of which should help you with these requests. Peace, Kevin Hoctor ke...@nothirst.com No Thirst Software LLC http://nothirst.com http://kevinhoctor.blogspot.com On Jun 14, 2009, at 9:35 PM, Jason wrote: Hello Kevin, I've recently purchased MoneyWell, set up various accounts (checking, savings, credit cards, cash, etc...), and uploaded/coded transactions from the beginning of 2009. I've developed my spending plan and, with the help of other folks in this forum (thanks Druzyne and Kevin!) figured out the nuances about allocating income, timing, and priority. I really like what I see so far. I need to be able to output a report that I can share (email or paper copy) with my wife so that we can review our spending (for the month) versus our budgeted spending plan (by bucket) for each month. The report could be similar to the Bucket Summary Report in format, but it would be helpful to have a reference for the budgeted/monthly spending plan values for the buckets that we've spent from. I know that there are different ways to see/review this information in the MoneyWell viewing panes and I find that very helpful to me, as I log or manage our family's transactions in MoneyWell. Reviewing the software with my wife isn't always the best or most practical approach, so having an output report that can convey the same spending to spending plan information would be quite helpful to let her know where things stand. The availability of both summary and detail transaction reports would be even better. It would be quite helpful to have an option to include spending plan amount references in both the Bucket Summary Report as well as the Transaction Listing Report. The option of a check box to Include Planned Amount from Spending Plan (by bucket) in these (or other) reports would be fantastic! That way, I could output a .pdf document with either a summary or detail spent by bucket and include the spending plan amount for each bucket. I know that you're planning new views for graphs and I hope that some new reports also come along with the next version. I hope this is helpful to explain my need and the reason for the request. I'm also curious to hear if anybody has a similar need and if others have work-arounds to address this reporting / process for sharing spent to date vs. budget with a spouse or significant other. If anybody has any good ideas or techniques, please share. Thanks in advance Kevin for your support and I really like using MoneyWell so far. [No Thirst Software] Re: Issue with segregating transactions from credit card account
On Jun 15, 2009, at 8:14 PM, Larry wrote: I am the primary card holder on a credit card account. My wife is secondary on my account and has her own card with a unique credit card number. This is a card we pay off monthly and I am trying to track my transactions separately than hers. When I sync up and download my information I get her transactions and mine. The only way I have of removing her transactions is to look online and delete her transactions from my Moneywell account ledger. Questions: 1) Can MoneyWell segregate these transactions 2) If not, does/should MoneyWell recognize when a transaction has been downloaded and deleted? To date I have been deleting my wife's transactions. However, when I download to update my ledger at a later date, I keep getting some of my wife's transactions that I have already deleted from my ledger. It would be handy if MoneyWell somehow tracked that the transactions had already been downloaded and ignore them so that I would not have to continually delete my wife's transactions. I hope this makes sense and perhaps someone has had a similar issue that could provide some guidance. Hi Larry, If your credit card company doesn't segregate these, then MoneyWell can't and probably shouldn't. Even though it is a different card number, it's the same credit card account and you should be tracking it as one account. I would also suggest that you keep both your and your wife's transactions in the same MoneyWell document. It's very hard to maintain two separate envelope budgets and not have any cross- pollination. Having two documents leaves room for error. [No Thirst Software] Re: Allocating Income, I had to do 12 times
On Jun 7, 2009, at 9:54 AM, Jason wrote: If I'm reading Drew's comments correctly, it seems to conflict with the logic outlined in the FAQ and link that he provides. The FAQ states: When set to the first half, MoneyWell will fill all the buckets set to First Half fully and the buckets set to All Month partially. Those buckets set to Second Half are ignored. The way I interpret this, if you set the allocation timing of a bucket to the first half of the month, that bucket is given priority and the fill to amount is filled completely. The FAQ seems to stated that you prioritize the timing of expense buckets based on when in the month (first half/second half) you pay the bill. It seems logical that you can then allocate income to those buckets in the first half of the month for expenses that are incurred in the first half of the month. Jason, From what I read, he had his buckets set to All Month and that's why he's not getting them filled completely until the Allocate Income panel is set to Second Half timing. During the first half of the month, the all month buckets get filled half of the remaining planned amount. You can see how this could continue to fill them partially. Lastly, is timing for when you allocate income a variable in this process? For example, I'm paid on the 15th and the 30th of the month and had planned on allocating income after I log income for each date. I'm assuming that I will log the income on the 15th, use the allocate income process, and my buckets that are set as first half will be prioritized. Then on the 30th, I'll do the same process and my buckets set for the second half will be prioritized. Am I understanding correctly and is this the best process to follow? Actually, the buckets are filled in priority order as you have placed them on the list. MoneyWell starts at the top and works its way down applying the other rules for first/second/all month timing. Right now I use Memo for Name/description, Payee for the account number of the other and Check ref for the Type. But I miss Memo. I tried to assign Memo for two fields but that does not work, it will only use one (the last one I believe). Is this perhaps possible in a future release, I mean to merge two collumns? Because right now it's sometimes difficult to memorize what the transaction was for. And where is Check ref. for? [No Thirst Software] Re: Newbie: Income bucket flows are one way. What am I doing wrong?
On Jun 4, 2009, at 12:38 AM, CarmineM wrote: Trying to do allocations for past months is a total waste of energy because that's all history. Think so? Let me explain why past allocations are meaningful to me, perhaps you might help me finding a better way to manage this all. I need to track past flows because I have already saved for bills yet to come. E.g. Usually my electricity bill has a mean value of 90 every two months, so each month I save 45. What happens is that, from time to time, the bill's value I have to pay is over the mean value of 90. If I start tracking money flows from June 1st, I will have 45 allocated for electricity and when the bill arrives my electricity bucket will go below 0, which is absolutley false since I still have money left from past months rollovers. Makes any sense? Yes, that makes sense but what I'm saying is that the history is not the issue. If you have $2000 to spend as of June 1, it's easy to reset your cash flow start date and drop some of that in buckets that have a balance left. If you have allocated money for electricity and there is $45 left over, then just drag the salary bucket to the electric bucket and add $45. I know this is not ideal but creating money flows is pretty easy so the history isn't so important but the bucket balances are. With your register history, you can't just skip a month or two and restart it because you'll lose spending trends and that makes it harder to adjust future spending. One more question. How am I supposed to track the expenses for which I can't (and don't want to) allocate any money? You lost me here. Why can't you allocate money for an expense? I admit the question wasn't clear at all, I beg your pardon. Honestly it hasn't much sense either. Usually, those are expenses for which I cannot predict the allocations and that I get a reimbursement for from my employer. Since they are very frequent, I liked the idea to have them visible together with other buckets. Thanks for your help I think I understand. We used to have a similar issue with my wife's work. She was constantly being reimbursed for spending and usually not until a month later. What we did was take money from another bucket to fund this when necessary and then reimburse the other bucket when we were reimbursed. It's a hassle though and I think I can come up with a better way of doing this with an I.O.U. system of some sort. Shouldn't I be able to automatically flow the money out of my income bucket to all the expense buckets as I indicated in my spending plan? Hi Chuck, Look at the top of the Allocate Income panel. Under the Income to Allocate heading, there is a pop-up selector. It will show you Combined Income Buckets by default but this will only show money to allocate if you have check the Include in Combined Income option on the Account Detail (click on an account and look at the detail to the right on the main window). Hello, Actually, I don't see the difference between house and personal accounts. If you are trying to use an envelope budgeting system (or any budget really), you can't break out accounts like this or you will end up losing track of where you money is really spent. The whole idea is to have one single set of buckets and only spend what has been allocated to the buckets so that you get away from viewing account balances as the source of your cash flow. The exception to this rule is if you are running a business and you need to keep business spending 100 percent separate from personal. Will the iPhone version deal with multiple documents? I read another post concerning this and it was suggested waiting until the 1st until allocating my income; I therefore left my salary in the Salary bucket but did not allocate it. I opened MoneyWell this morning (the 1st June) and it has almost doubled the amount in my Salary bucket. I really love using MoneyWell but this has really confused me! What has happened? Hi Craig, I'm a bit confused too. So did you allocate early using the Allocate Income option? If you did, then your buckets will get filled so you can start paying bills now instead of waiting until the first of the month. Once you use this option, you need to keep it set to that day range or MoneyWell will be confused about last months allocations and how they affect this month. Hi Paul, If you set a bucket to First Half then it will fill completely in the first part of the month and the Second Half timings fill only in the second half. On May 30, 2009, at 10:57 AM, Chuck B wrote: I'm a new user setting up my accounts. I just imported my transactions from Paypal for 2009, and along with the transactions came the automatic creation of a whole lot of buckets I didn't want: Web Accept Payment Sent Payment Received Fee low... and others. I don't want to have to manually enter transactions for PayPal, but I also don't want unwanted buckets created every time I import data, which seems to be the only other alternative. Does anyone know what I can do? Hi Chuck, PayPal export documents are a mess. I've all but given up on them for my MoneyWell documents. There's so much extra clutter in them. Currently, I don't have a good solution for this problem. You can't delete buckets that have transactions or money flows associated with them, but you can hold down the Option key and drag those buckets on top of other buckets. This will merge the contents of the two and remove the bucket you dragged. The ability to track I.O.U.s in MoneyWell is already on the planned feature list. Thanks! Maybe for this particular case it will work but in case I'd need to change money flows due to overtaking from Dining Out bucket it would be really hard to remember to move money back to the original bucket. In any case I think that owing money shouldn't be threated as income or expense. I didn't really eat out for two persons moreover I do need to know that I still have this money as my asset regardless of where they physically is. I think of them more like transfers and in other application I've modeled them as transfers too - from my checking account to special personal account John Doe, for example. This way I could see our interpersonal balance with John - either negative, when I have to return credit, or positive, when I should get them back. In MW we have buckets which complicates such interaction. Let's think about how in 1931 people owe money. There was no envelope signed like Owe to others as one couldn't plan for this. Usually it was money left in other envelopes or some savings. But how did these people know that money wasn't spent but rather blocked for some time? They should write it down somewhere! However MW doesn't provide such capability or I'm not smart enough to figure this out :). So the ultimate question is how to block some amount of money from being available for spending? It's not about setting start date for money flows. It's about having outside buckets where you could put and get money but these operations don't mean income or expenses. Such paradigm will solve not only problem of tracking interactions with other persons but also tracking of savings. Seems that I came up with kind of feature request :) However I understand that after yesterday's emails hell this may just be not the best time to post it. Problem is how to do this correctly mixed with buckets paradigm. I hope next example scenario will help you to understand my problem better. I would recommend assigning the entire credit card transaction to your Dining Out bucket. When your colleague pays you back, you can manually enter a deposit into your cash account and also assign that to the Dining Out bucket so it gets credited back the amount you lended out. -Lance --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups No Thirst Software User Forum group. You can create exact or sub string matches, and match if Any or All criteria of the rule match. iBank has been pretty unstable since 3 came out, looking for something better but I would miss this too much. Thanks for the feedback. MoneyWell actually searches both the payee and memo fields for the alias you set up in the memorized transactions. Any memorized transaction can have multiple aliases so you get an OR matching scenario as well. With each memorized transaction, you can tell MoneyWell to update individual fields as well as the payee or just the payee. I haven't really found a need in my transaction matching for more than this. What 1.5 will do is give you more control over generic terms that should be ignored like WITHDRAWAL or DEPOSIT so false positives can be reduced. For the above, you could have one alias AMERICAN EXPRESS, COLLECTION to match the withdrawals and another AMERICAN EXPRESS, SETTLEMENT to match the deposits. You could even do AMERICAN EXPRESS for the latter because MoneyWell tests the longer aliases first and then checks for the shorter, more generic ones. The alias can be in any part of the payee or memo so you can have the alias MCDONAL and it will match a payee Electronic withdrawal to MCDONAL and your memorized payee can then be McDonald's and assign a bucket of Dining to the imported transaction. In doing some looking around in the forum, it appears the method of choice is to utilize transfers. I guess this would make sense to me if you could not direct download your credit card transactions. I pay off my credit card balance monthly. So on every bank statement I have a payment towards my credit card. I do not now how to clear these from my unassigned SMART bucket after downloading without assigning to another bucket. I would prefer not to create a dummy bucket. Hi Larry, As Lance stated, you can always set transactions to Bucket Optional in the context menu for the transaction list. The only other thing I could think of trying, would be to delete the credits after the direct connect on my credit card account and use the transfer option from my checking to mimic the credit to my credit card account. This might work but it seems you should not have to delete a transaction that actually belongs. I hope this makes sense. Any help in how to handle this issue would be greatly appreciated! What I tend to do is to create a transfer when I make a payment and then when I use the direct connect download to import transactions, MoneyWell matches these up and merges the information properly. This way I get the connected transfer and I don't have to manually delete imported transactions. However, the reconcile amount is not clearing. The starting and ending balances are correct, as well as the transaction amounts. However, MW still thinks there is a difference. Hello, Are you entering the starting and ending balances on the statement as negatives? Also, your starting balance transaction for a credit card or liability account is usually a Charge because credit cards are liability accounts and rarely carry a positive balance. For more reconciling tips, see What is reconciling an account and how do I do it? As well, I have my mortgage payment memorized. When I opened the transaction from pending, (I, too, was surprised like other members of this list that it wasn't automatic) my checking account sees the transaction, but my mortgage account doesn't. I'm not sure as to why. The transaction detail states that there is a transfer from my checking to my mortgage account. The two sides of a transfer are not connected in this manner. If you want to mark both sides as Open you'll need to do them both individually. This is changing in an upcoming release. I really want to like MW, but experiencing these kinds of problems are starting to wane on me--and I still have yet to fully learn the bucket concept. I could be doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. The bucket concept (envelope budgeting) shouldn't be too hard to learn. It takes a change of focus from account balances to bucket balances. On May 17, 2009, at 11:27 PM, pacer wrote: I really like MoneyWell and really like the buckets idea, but am holding off moving from Quicken primarily due to the (apparent) lack of just a couple of features. When entering items from one receipt as a split transaction, a built-in calculator function is essential for me to quickly add up various items that all fit together into each expense bucket. As well, while entering these items, the ability to set and use single digit alpha sales tax codes (e.g. entering g on the keyboard would automatically add 5% to the item or total) would vastly improve my ability to handle the provincial sales tax and goods and services tax that we have in Ontario. Without these related features, it is a lengthy chore taking a long receipt full of various items with different tax amounts (some have no tax, some have PST only, some have GST only, some have both) and assign them in a split to various buckets. I hate to say it, but Quicken handles this pretty well (but the budget planning and interactive budget feedback are for the birds). I did notice a thread from December 2007 on this topic, in which future development along these lines was indicated, but have seen nothing since. Thanks for your consideration... An inline calculator is on the feature list for future releases but I haven't looked at the tax codes. I'll amend the feature ticket and see if that can be added at the same time. Thanks. [No Thirst Software] Re: Pending transactions question
On May 17, 2009, at 12:42 PM, Brice wrote: Hi Kevin - Thanks for a great product! Thanks Brice! I have some scheduled transactions and I noticed that these do not appear to automatically change from a pending status to open when the current date is later than the scheduled transaction date. These pending transactions clear just fine when I download transactions but if I am between downloads they stay pending. As a result, the account balance is not updated in the account list to reflect the pending transaction although the balance does show correctly at the bottom of the document window. I was expecting the balances in the account list to reflect all transactions up to the current date. Currently, MoneyWell makes you switch those pending transactions manually. The reason for this is just to confirm that they are valid and you don't end up with transactions in your registry that never happened. A future release will prompt you for those and give you a one-click solution to flip them to Open. There are other products that allow you to sync folders and documents between two computers (I believe DropBox works well). You can also copy your updated file to your iDisk and then back down to the other computer or you can share a folder on a local network. I think this limit is programmatically enforced, since the changes I tried in IB were overridden at runtime. It looks like the middle pane is not allowed to be arbitrarily small, however, because if you try to make that happen by making the bucket list big, there's a limit enforced. Hi Dave, I'm not aware of this kind of problem with Bank of America. You should be able to download an OFX file with a date range from them and even if you can't, MoneyWell should automatically eliminate the duplicates as long as you pick the OFX or QFX format. On my laptop, there's not enough screen real estate. I wish that the minimum window width were smaller. I wish that I could hide the bucket/account list column. (I know I can resize it, but even at its minimum size, I can't use that space to make the whole window smaller.) I wish that I could reduce the size of the middle column, too. The only panel you can't resize is the Detail panel on the right. The middle panel resizes with the window size and the left panel is adjustable. You will have more options in future releases, although MoneyWell 1.5 will require OS X Leopard. Which notebook do you have and what's the screen resolution? I might monkey with the program in Interface Builder to see if I can do this by hand, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels constrained in this way. Love the program! Thanks.
