I find this feature quite annoying, because after aquiring a quite high typing speed after years of training, I know have to think twice each time I type one of these symbols. If you want to save the file as myfile.sql you should enter myfile.sql, not myfile and hope the program adds the extention. Even if you set it to *.txt and save the file, it doesn's add the extention .txt. The file type on this page is just usable to filter what's in the directory you're looking at. If you go to save a file and just enter myfile, Notepad++ saves it as myfile, not myfile.txt.
