If N++ crashes, dumps are generated (at least its tried, it is a crash after all). I dont think writing a temp file right before save is a good idea, way to much load on the harddisk (besides, if explorer is having trouble with the disks, who guarantees notepad++ wont, some user might decide the USB is the best place for temp storage). b) Such a plugin exists methinks, not sure for unnamed files though. Search the forums or the web, dunno where it is at. If ClearType was on, Notepad++ was slow -- as in, you'd type a letter, wait a split second, and then the letter would appear. In fact, typing *anything* into Notepad++ would peg one of the CPUs. You could mash the keyboard and then watch as the application caught up. None of the other applications I tried (Thunderbird, Opera, Word, RogSoft's Notepad+) had this problem with text entry. Every version of Notepad++ I tried (5.1.4 ANSI, 5.1.4 Unicode, 4.9.2) had this problem. It didn't seem to matter what font I was using, either. That said, I've tried this on other computers and haven't seen the issue, and I have an easy-enough workaround (turn off ClearType), but I figured I should report the bug. If your language uses the English alphabet (or something close to it: German, French, Italian, Spanish...) then it's more or less the same. Otherwise, the Unicode version should provide better support. So if you don't know which one to choose, go for the Unicode one: in the future, it will be the only one to be supported. The only reason to opt for the old ANSI version is if you want to use some plugins that were written for the ANSI version and that haven't been converted yet, but most plugins have already been updated, so it shouldn't be a problem. There is a plugin by Franco Stellari, but I've emailed him about it, I haven't seen an autosaved file from the plugin yet. I'm sure you can see my point.
