I recently tried NP++ after several recommendations based on its quality, speed,
and flexibility. I have also been sampling the Windows Textmate-equivalent E,
which is a commercial product. I recommend anyone reading this to google "e
textmate" for a trial, just to have a basis for comparison. I must say that
NP++ performs remarkably against something that isn't free, with one large
exception
(for me): the tack-on incremental search. In E, this function is extremely well
integrated into the GUI, docking nicely on the bottom during searches, and
allows
an easy switch between normal and regex modes. In my line of work, visualizing
all occurrences of a search is extremely important. NP++ has the 'mark all'
facility, which is of limited use. With incremental search, I would absolutely
love incremental highlighting of ALL matches, not just the first one. E works
exactly similar to textmate, which works extremely similar to VIM. I would love
to use NP++ for all my environments, but simply cannot afford the loss of that
functionality.

Find: Also, the find prompt is extremely useful for multi-file,
find-and-replace,
and counting...but could it possibly be minorly reworked to use less user
prompts,
and possibly the ability to dock it someone on the screen? For example, when
no occurences are found while searching, I must click 'ok' to proceed. I would
love to use the mouse less, and when that box drops out of focus because I am
flying around other things, getting it back in focus even to use the keyboard
to accept it takes more time than I believe it should.

Views: Only two. In E, especially on my large screen, I can add vertical and
horizontal splits in combination or inside of each other, each with its own
set of tabs! It's limitless and completely flexible. In NP++, I am confined
to one horizontal or vertical split. Not a major issue on my laptop, but when
I am on my 24", balls-out working on many documents, the ability to have all
of them in the same window is priceless.

Overall, Notepad++ is quite good, but I cannot yet use it full-time. I would
love to see some of these things at least considered. Let me know what you guys
think!

Thanks for comments Jens.

Firstly, I apologise for thinking Richard was responsible for "Capital Letter
Mode". I hadn't noticed it before. Thanks for that Jens. It would be nice if
the column headers reflected that setting, at the moment letters are in lower
case.

I would love to have 16-bit 16 column editing mode but it won't all fit in my
normal NPP window width. That's my main reason for changing the font and font
size AND squeezing the columns closer together. Font sizes do make a big
difference
to how many lines I can see, especially in my default fixed-width font were
it's 8 point is smaller than others. At the moment, the blank space between
the columns of hex numbers is bigger than it needs to be and to keep changing
them is a nuisance. Not every column size has to be stored, of course, there
are only 3, Addresses, Data and Dump.

I don't get a redraw when switching modes, say between 8-bit and 16-bit.

all the best

Mark B

Richard

Window redraw works fine after font change and I can now see the cursor :-)

In Font selection dialog, the "sample" is not shown any more. It was on the
last version.

The grey bar is indeed a redraw problem and is actually there in the original
version, so not your problem :-) I just hadn't noticed it when the background
was white.
It can be seen here http://www.linnhe2.free-online.co.uk/misc/grey%20bar.jpg

Not a great problem just cosmetic.

all the best and thanks

Mark B

I think you need to rethink your activities.

Hello,

I just installed Notepad++ and have two questions:

1) Is there a button that can be added to the menu bar that can be clicked so
that I can preview my code (HTML/PHP/JS/etc) in Firefox or IE? I see the
shortcut
of Ctrl+Alt+Shift+X, but just want to find out if there's a button also, and
how to define/create it if possible?

2) Is there a way to remove the collapsing lines on left margin so that I don't
have to see it? (the column/section between line number and the actual code)

Thanks,

jj

I couldn't get it to work.. Does anyone know when this will be part of
Notepad++
officially?

OK, new verson of the plugin on the same address as last time,

I descided that rather than use the Windows Font Chooser, why not seperate and
re-use the design and code of the NotePad++ Style Configurator, so that is
exactly
what I have done. I hope that what is done of it works for you design wise.
I have tested it, and shaken some interesting bugs out of the code, I have also
still to do the Selected Style stuff, so please be patient while I finish that
off. other than that, you can now change all aspects of the font and window
colours.

Like I said, I did see the numerous threads without solution. In this thread
the solution that he gives is to blow out the language definition in langs.xml
This way I won't have syntaxe coloration anymore. This is not a solution.

I think there is are no solution. I just want to know if this feature will be
implemented in the future or not.
