1) What is the difference between Unicode and ANSI formats?

As quoted from Wikipedia:

Unicode is a computing industry standard allowing computers to consistently
represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems.
Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published
in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more
than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding
methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character
properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files,
and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for
normalization,
decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the
correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic
or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts).

ANSI, or Windows-1252:

Windows-1252 (also known as WinLatin1) is a character encoding of the Latin
alphabet, used by default in the legacy components of Microsoft Windows in
English
and some other Western languages. It is one version within the group of Windows
code pages. In LaTeX packages, it is referred to as ansinew. The encoding is
a superset of ISO 8859-1, but differs from the IANA's ISO-8859-1 by using
displayable
characters rather than control characters in the 0x80 to 0x9F range. It is known
to Windows by the code page number 1252, and by the IANA-approved name
"windows-1252". This code page also contains all the printable characters that
are in ISO 8859-15 (though some are mapped to different code points).

2) Where/when would I use one or the other?

Depends, Unicode is compatible on every operating system, while ANSI is more
Windows-supportive or something like that.

3) Which one should I be downloading as I am mainly using N++ for VHDL editing?

I have no idea, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vhdl?

For one thing, why are you even downloading a Trojan Virus in the first place?

So if the .zip file contains a Trojan Virus, don't you think the .txt file will
have special format and other crap in it?

I don't know if this is Windows 7 beta specific, but when I use the search in
files feature and I pop up the search results window, a blank error window pops
up with the title:

SetWindowsHookEx(KEYBOARD) fail..
and an OK button.

At this point all windows mouse clicks are captured I'm assuming by some runaway
process, and I have to use ctrl-alt-delete to end notepad++ manually. If I
alt-tab to the error and hit space to activate the OK button, it changes to
an error that says 'GetLastError() returned 1428'. At that point the screen
redraw slows to a crawl and the mouse barely moves on the screen. It's pretty
strange, and I've never seen anything like it on Vista or 7 before. Again the
only way to get windows back to normal behavior is to end process on Notepad++.
This happens on the newest release and at least the version previous.

Finally, after carefully debugging, I solved this problem
root cause:
the TextFX plugin adds a new menu colum in main menu, so the index of
plugins menu is changed
after the TextFX is loaded. Then when the language is changed, we need to reload
the context menu,
then the wroing index of the plugins menu cause all the context menu items from
plugins menu are lost.
sloution:
add a parameter to getContextMenuFromXmlTree method to specify the index
of the plugins menu.

would someone please check this in. it's not a serious bug. but it's annoying.

Another thing is that I think we need to send a message to all plugins after
the language is changed so the
plugins can do something about it like enable/disable items or change the menu
items' names, something
like that.

The other determining factor is any plugins you currently use. A lot, but not
all, plugins have been updated to the Unicode version. So check that any
plugins
you currently use have a unicode download available. If so, I would recommend
going to the unicode as soon as possible.

Per npp 5.1 notes:
"ANSI version is released for those who work still under pre-historic
win95/98/ME
:)
Sure you can always use the ANSI version under w2k/xp/vista if you don't need
Unicode path support, however unicode release will be the main stream on the
future versions (ie. The installer contains only Unicode version)."
and
"Note that the Notepad++ installer won't remove the ANSI plugins for you, so
if you update your old Notepad++ with installer, remove the ANSI plugins
manually
after the installation."

That means that npp.5.2.Installer.exe is only the Unicode version and the
easiest
to maintain upgrades to the latest release.

To keep using the ANSI you need to download npp.5.2.bin.zip which has both ANSI
and Unicode versions and then extract the ANSI tree.

Per the change log for 5.2 the following plugins are included:

Included plugins (Unicode):

1. TextFX v0.26
2. NppExec v0.3 RC1
3. Spell Checker v1.3.2
4. MIME Tools v1.5
5. FTP_synchronize v0.9.6
6. NppExport v0.2.8
7. Doc Monitor v2.2
8. NppNetNote v0.1
9. Compare plugin v1.5.2

Included plugins (ANSI):

1. TextFX v0.25
2. NppExec v0.3 RC1
3. Spell Checker v1.3.1
4. MIME Tools v1.5
5. FTP_synchronize v0.9.6
6. NppExport v0.2.8
7. Compare plugin v1.5.1
8. Light Explorer v1.5
9. Doc Monitor v2.2
10. NppNetNote v0.1

Hope this helps,
OneEye
