>OBJECTIVES
>Conventional design procedures for engineering structures of all
>types consist, in general, of trying to satisfy certain performance
>requirements under a set of prescribed loading conditions.
>Traditional structures, however, cannot modify their response
>mechanisms, and are thus unable to perform successfully when subjected
>to load conditions which are different than the ones they were
>designed for or when some of their subsystems or components fail.
>These deficiencies have generated interest in developing a new class
>of so-called smart structures.
>
>A smart structure is defined as one which has the ability to determine
>its present state, decide in a rational manner on a set of actions
>that would change its state to a more desirable state, and carry out
>these actions in a controlled manner and in a short period of time.
>
>Intelligent behaviour is obtained by integrating within the structural
>system a control system consisting of three main components: (a)
>sensors, which identify the present state of the structure, (b)
>cognitive interpretation and decision systems, consisting of numerical
>control and optimization algorithms, knowledge processing systems, and
>learning systems, (c) actuators, which modify the system parameters
>according to the action plan to respond to the applied stimulus.
>This framework is now becoming possible due to significant recent
>advances in materials, sensor and actuator technologies, real-time
>information processing, and intelligent, passive and active, control
>systems.
>
>In parallel with the development of smart structures, a generation of
>new materials which react to external stimuli in a non-conventional
>manner, that can be interpreted as intelligent has also evolved.
>
>The Conference will address the issues with the emphasis on the
>application of computational methods to model, control and manage the
>behaviour of smart structures and materials.
>
>This conference, like the first meeting held in Rome 1998, will
>address a wide range of engineering disciplines involved with the
>design of smart materials and structures, and will appeal to civil,
>mechanical, aerospace, ocean and biomedical engineers, as well as the
>microstructure and acoustic communities.

>CALL FOR PAPERS
>Papers are invited on the topics outlined below and others falling
>within the scope of the Meeting. Abstracts should be submitted by
>mail, fax or Email as soon as possible and no later than 2 November
>1999. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should clearly state the
>purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the
>final paper. The final acceptance will be based on the full-length
>paper. The author must attend the conference to present the paper,
>if accepted. Each submitted paper is subject to a separate
>registration. Please tick the topics most relevant to your paper.

>LOCATION
>Madrid as the capital of Spain has a great deal to offer. With its
>diverse mixture of cultural history in a vibrant modern city, Madrid
>is full of life and character. This contrast in classic and
>contemporary culture can be witnessed in the juxtaposition of the
>city's 'magic triangle', consisting of some of Europe's finest art
>galleries, the 'Museo del Prado', Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and the
>Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Leaving aside the art museums, the
>splendour of the Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real, and the elegance of the
>Parque del Buen Retiro, the essence of Madrid is in the lively street
>atmosphere.
>
>CONFERENCE VENUE
>The conference will be held at the Melia Madrid, which is located in
>the heart of Madrid's regal area. The hotel is just a short distance
>from the "Plaza de Espana", the Royal Palace and the exceptional
>"Jardines del Moro". This is a superior first-class hotel fully
>modernized. Specially negotited rates will be offered to delegates
>attending the conference.
>
>TRAVEL
>International and domestic flights arrive at Madrid's Barajas
>airport. Central Madrid can be reached easily and efficiently by bus
>or taxi. For travel to Madrid contact your local travel agent.
>
>CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
>The Proceedings of the Conference will be published in book form by
>WIT Press and will be available to the delegates at the time of
>registration. In addition, the Proceedings will be widely distributed
>internationally, immediately after the Conference. The language of
>the Conference will be English.
