Desde: 22-06-2002 Hasta: 23-06-2002 Lugar: San Diego, California, USA Dear Colleagues:
It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 3rd U.S.-JAPAN WORKSHOP ON ADVANCED RESEARCH ON EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING FOR DAMS, to be held in San Diego, California, on June 22-23, 2002. This workshop is co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and the U.S. Society on Dams (USSD), and it will part o f the pre-conference activities of the 22nd USSD Annual Meeting and Conference (to be held at the same location on June 24-28, 2002). The objectives of this workshop are to provide a forum to discuss the current status of research and development in seismic design and evaluation of dams and appurtenant structures, to identify critical research needs that can receive substantial benefit from joint investigation, and to promote cooperative research initiatives to develop economical protective countermeasures against seismic effects. Please mark your calendars. Enclosed please find the attached Call for Papers, in case you are interested in proposing a formal presentation of your technical work. We hope that you will be able to participate in this meeting by presenting your work or as an active member of the audience. If you wish to attend, please let us know by replying to the following address: enrique.e.mat...@erdc.usace.army.mil before December 21, 2001. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Enrique E. This workshop is organized by the Task Committee on Dams of the Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects, which is part of the activities of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UJNR). This workshop is co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and the U.S. Society on Dams (USSD), and it will part of the pre-conference activities of the 22nd USSD Annual Meeting and Conference (to be held at the same location on June 24-28, 2002). Since its establishment in 1964, the UJNR Program has been a significant link channeling international technological cooperation and advancing the communication and exchange of ideas and information. By addressing critical issues related to conservation and management of natural resources, the UJNR Program has demonstrated a powerful role in applied science development. This role has transcended the frontiers of the two participating countries, with worldwide influence in the advancement of science and technology. The workshop will focus on a variety of technical aspects covering concrete and embankment dams, and their appurtenant structures. The technical sessions will address the following main themes: 7 Seismic Evaluation - Standards, Requirements, and Criteria 7 Numerical Techniques for Seismic Analysis 7 Seismic Design and Evaluation of Appurtenant Structures 7 Instrumentation, Monitoring, and Condition Assessment 7 Seismic Upgrade and Rehabilitation 7 Foundation Problems 7 Maintenance Issues 7 Other General Topics and Case Studies Prospective authors are invited to submit a 200 to 400-word abstract for a 20-minute presentation no later than December 21, 2001. Abstracts must be submitted electronically to the email address below. Authors of accepted abstracts will be expected to submit a manuscript, no longer than 15 pages including figures, tables, and references, which will be published in the Workshop Proceedings.
