        XX CILAMCE
20TH IBERIAN LATIN-AMERICAN CONGRESS ON COMPUTATIONAL
         METHODS IN ENGINEERING
November 3rd-5th,1999 - Polytechnic School of the University of
São Paulo, Brazil

The use of Computational Methods in the solution of Engineering Problems
is universally accepted today, having caused a noticeable impact on the
day-to-day work of the
professional engineer over the last few decades. Progress seems to be
made in applied computational methods at an ever increasing rate,
however the benefits from these new
technologies do not often quickly become available or even known.

The conference has the goal to create a forum in which engineers and
researchers can exchange ideas and information about the computational
methods and systems currently available,
including those under development at universities and research
institutes. In addition, it is hoped that it will contribute to the
dissemination of knowledge about computational
methods and systems inside the engineer's community of Italy, Portugal,
Spain and Latin-America.

The conference has its origins in a meeting for Civil Engineers held in
Rio de Janeiro in 1977. In the following year it was repeated in São
Paulo. In 1979, in Porto Alegre, the scope of
the conference was broadened to include a wide range of engineering
applications, giving name to the present name of the conference. At the
same time, the AMC was created. The
conference was then held in Curitiba (1980), Buenos Aires (1982),
Santiago (1983), Salvador (1984), Paraná (1985), Madrid (1985), São
Carlos (1986), Rio de Janeiro (1987), Córdoba
(1988), Porto (1989), Rio de Janeiro (1990), Santa Fe (1991), Porto
Alegre (1992), São Paulo (1993), Belo Horizonte (1994), Curitiba (1995),
Padua (1996) and Brasília (1997). In
1998 the conference has jointed the IV World Congress on Computational
Mechanics (IV WCCM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Some recent CILAMCE meetingshave attracted over 300 contributions, with
the participation of up to 500 delegates. The CILAMCE conference has
thus become one of the most
important forums for the exchange of computational experiences between
professional engineers, researchers and students.
