solved. I hope Austin is right that this bug is fixed in later
versions of gmime. I will try to upgrade and see if it solve the
issue.

conservative in what notmuch send. After all, gnus, mutt and pine
handle these from fields.

lem is the quotes around the MIME encoded string. Mutt and
Gnus handle these headers properly, but notmuch do not.
Any hope of having this fixed in a future version of ntomuch?

Hm, it ended up as ISO-8859-1. Anwway, I was able to get around the
problem by commenting out this block from my .emacs file and start
emacs using LC_CTYPE=nb_NO.UTF-8:

This should show 3 lower case letters and 3 upper case letters, one
'ae' combination, one o with a slash from lower left to upper right,
and finally the letter a with a small ring above it.
