Ah; that seems to have done the trick. After reinstalling from the repo several 
times, I downloaded the latest "release" and it worked. Thanks!

I'm not involved with OpenSUSE packaging, but it sounds like your
notmuch binaries are finding an older version of the notmuch library
(perhaps a private install, or perhaps you just need to update the
library package).
