Re: NPNY: Comp Tix To BB Kings - including Days of Wild

2009-04-12 Thread Amil Dave
Just to clarify, you click the link for the show you want, and you'll
see a code to enter somewhere on the screen. For Days of Wild it's
Lotus. Then on the ticket purchasing screen you choose the $0.00
option and enter the code. Unfortunately, you still have to pay a few
dollars for the ticketmaster charges.

Re: NPNY: Prince Signs Deal With Target

2009-03-03 Thread Amil Dave
There's one in Queens! :-) He must be getting a great advance from
them. Christina Ag released an album exclusively through Target late
last year - no one bought it. Guns N Roses did Best Buy, with so-so
results. Walmart has been successful with Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC,
etc, but it's been rumored that part of their deal is that Walmart
buys a few thousand copies in the first week to help boost sales. I
know there are other factors with those albums, but a Target exclusive
is pretty much going to guarantee Prince less album sales (obviously).

Besides that, I'm excited to get all of the new music at once! I think
that's a huge plus. And the $12 price. GREAT! Smart, too.

Amil

Moderaator: Brilliant because the Bria's album is a throwaway album. Nobody
would of normally purchased it anyway. We don't know who she is and most of
us don't care. He has done little promote her or create a relationship with
his fans. Major misstep on his part. So she will make an easy 100,000 units
from the handful Prince of fans left and disappear into obscurity like most

Re: NPNY: New Yorker (11/24/08): Soup With Prince

2008-11-18 Thread Amil Dave
The New Yorker is definitely not known for sensational journalism. Did
you read the article with the Obama cover? If so, you'd know why they
did it. It wasn't sensational. It was motivated. There was a reason
for it. People didn't like it. But that's very different than in this
case, where there's no motivation or reason for them to make things up
about Prince. I know what you're saying about stirring up controversy,
though. But I think this really comes down to Prince's stupid rule
about not allowing the media to use tape recorders.

 Soup With Prince
by Claire Hoffman November 24, 2008
 New Yorker

The thirty-thousand-square-foot Italianate villa, built this century by
Vanna White's ex-husband, looks like many of the other houses in Beverly
Park, a gated community in L.A., except for the bright-purple carpet that
spills down the front steps to announce its new tenant: Prince. One
afternoon just before the election, Prince invited a visitor over. Inside,
the place was done up in a generic Mediterranean style, although there were
personal flourishes here and there a Lucite grand piano with a
 gold-colored
Artist Formerly Known as Prince symbol suspended over it, purple paisley
pillows on a couch. Candles scented the air, and New Age music played in the
living room, where a TV screen showed images of bearded men playing flutes.
Prince padded into the kitchen, a small fifty-year-old man in yoga pants and
a big sweater, wearing platform flip-flops over white socks, like a geisha.

Would you like something to eat? he asked, sidling up to the counter.
Prince's voice was surprisingly deep, like that of a much larger man. He
picked up a copy of 21 Nights, a glossy volume of photographs that he had
just released. It is his first published book, a collection of highly
stylized photographs of him taken during a series of gigs in London last
year. I'm really proud of this, he said. Short original poems and a CD
accompany the photographs. (Sample verse: Who eye really am only time will
tell/ 2 the almighty life 4ce that grows stronger with every chorus/ Yes
give praise, lest ye b among . . . the guilty ones.)

Limping slightly, Prince set off on a walk around his new bachelor pad.
Glass doors opened onto acres of back yard, and a hot tub bubbled in the
sunlight. I have a lot of parties, he explained. In the living room, he'd
installed purple thrones on either side of a fireplace, and, nearby, along a
hallway, he had hung photographs of himself, in a Moroccan villa, in various
states of undress. At the end of the hall, a gauzy curtain fluttered in a
doorway. My room, he said. It's private.

Prince has lived in Los Angeles since last spring, after spending years in
Minneapolis, holding court in a complex called Paisley Park, where he made
thousands of songs, far away from the big labels. Seven years ago, he became
a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could
understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. I wanted to be around
people, connected to people, for work, he said. You know, it's all about
religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion,
so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things,
 how they read Scripture.

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a
musician friend, Larry Graham. I don't see it really as a conversion, he
said. More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in
'The Matrix.' He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his
fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock
on doors and proselytize. Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly
they're really cool about it, he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the
Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. We started
 talking red and blue,

Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?

2007-07-26 Thread Amil Dave

I really like the album. I'm on the side of it being one of Prince's
best in years. Better than 3121 and Musicology. In fact, I think it
will outsell 3121 and Musicology. One reason is that I think people
who haven't bought Prince albums in a long time, but know him from
the 80's and early 90's, will hear songs like Future Baby Mama and
want to buy it. I pretty much like it all and think this is a great
album. In my mind, the only recent album that trumps this is Rainbow
Children.

And when you go back to that tour (One Night Alone 2001), it was
the last time he was really supporting an album by playing a large
share of the songs from it live. From 3121, for example, he's really
only doing 3 songs or something. I'm betting that if and when we see
Prince tour here next, he'll be playing at least half of this album
live - and it will kick ass. Get On The Boat didn't really hit me
until I saw him do it live - then it killed me. But with Planet
Earth, a song like Chelsea Rodgers is already doing it on record.

The packaging is very simple - no liner notes, just a few credits on
the back. No tracklisting. No Prince. Not even the name of the
album on the spine. And what the hell is he wearing in those
pictures? - that black and red thing?? lol

Here's a very positive review of it from Entertainment Weekly. (Sorry
if it's already been posted.):

I agree... I consider Planet Earth, Somewhere Here on Earth, Future
 Baby

 decade.
The One You Wanna C is still growing on me and the other stuff I
 still have
to listen to more closely. As I have said before, to me musically
 it's a
much more engaging record than Musicology or 3121--a lot more
 interesting
musical ideas going on... it's going to be a slow grower that stays
 with me
 for a while.

Seriously folk need to get over themselves. Didn't they pull a
 poster a few
years ago for this same reason? Controversy raised over Prince
 performance

I agree with Derek. Guitar is not a very good song. All Along The
Watchtower/Best of You sounds much better (from Howard Stern show).

Buyer beware!! You should be able to try before you buy. There is
 no online
sample of the track. They want you pay 1.99 for something you never
 heard
 before.

Wait till there is a sample, don't be a brainwashed follower!

[BTW I heard it and its sucks!, but I rather let you decided for
 yourself..]

Moderator: I think it probably translates better live or at least
 I hope,
its likeFury, but it won't grow on you at all! It just sucks like
CyberSingle. The lyrics are forced and generic. He should of release
 Watchtower instead]

NPNY: Meeting Tevin Campbell

2006-11-08 Thread Amil Dave
I met Tevin Campbell tonight! I was walking with my friends Ashlene
and Sumeet down 8th Ave, past 52nd (NYC). Ashlene spotted a guy
walking into a Rite Aid on a nearby corner, and called out, Thats
Tevin Campbell! I didnt believe her, so I chilled outside while
Sumeet and Ashlene went inside to scope it out.

Ashlene is a huge fan and has been trying to get in touch with him
for months now (she's a journalist and has interviewed lots of
singers, including Sumeet: http://www.ashleneonline.com).

A few minutes later, Sumeet calls my cell and says it's Tevin, and
that they're talking to him inside. So I went in, and they had
stopped him as he was buying some ice cream to take back to his
apartment.

I took a photo of Ashlene and Tevin from my cell phone camera:
http://www.soundvillains.com/tevinashlene.jpg

We went to a Starbucks with Tevin across the street and talked for
about 20 min. Really nice guy. Lives in that area of Manhattan.
Ashlene is prob going to do an interview with him and put it up on
her site soon.

Anyway, it was a funny little random story, so I thought I would
share it! I dont think he gets recognized much anymore... except by
Prince fans, of course. :-)

Moderator: Good Stuff! Let's us know when its up! I'd like to know when his
next album is and who he is working with at the moment. I vaguely remember a
mention he was working with someone, but I can't remember -Derek
