October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Beginning today and continuing through the end of the month, the Office of
Disability Employment Policy will offer a wealth of information about the
NDEAM activities of President Barack Obama's administration, and in
particular, ODEP's activities. Additionally, we will post items of general
interest to the community.

The first installment is now available http://www.dol.gov/odep/index.htm

2009-02-06 Thread Philip J. Vitkus
Hi, Jane, thanks for the info! It sounds like the
states and NPSO collect more informative data; and that the DOL data reflects
the data from Harris polls.I wonder how the DOL classifies institutions,
whether per their definition this includes community-based living situations,
e.g., supported living arrangements or very small group homes. As I think
about it, their definition likely doesn't significantly affect the statistics,
since so few people with disabilities reside in the large institutions that do
exist, and so little funding is available to provide adults with disabilities
with noninstitutional living situation support. It would be interesting
to find out how many/ what percentage of those who are considered employed are
16-21 and are working (paid for working at least one hour the previous week) or
volunteering their time to a family operation (unpaid but working 15hours
a week or more) while participating in a funded public education program.
This suggests dropping students from the numbers could significantly affect the
percentage of those unemployed.23% are working at least one hour paid or
15 hours unpaid/ week.13% unemployed - and looking for work.36%,
per the definitions, in the labor force.64% not in the labor
force. My math indicates 77% of individuals with disabilities are not in
the labor force or arenunemployed - 77% arenot working. That more
accurately reflects the true unemployment rate for individuals with
disabilities, don't you think?Regards,PhilPhilip J. Vitkus, M.S.Ed.Director of Instructional
