I have run a single complete loop of my program against leak detection
software and it came out without any memory leaks. So I assume the large
swap consumption is due to memory required by the program (and indirectly
ns-2) itself.

program runs out of swap space and hence crashes.
I have now doubled the swap and started a new run. Anyone out there with
experience to confirm the fact that the swap size required is linear to
the duration of the simulation?
In Linux, there is limit for your files. Maybe, you can see 'limits.conf'
file.
