I have found Dick Hensold's exercises very helpful

Northumbrian, he does play the NSP very well and is an excellent teacher.

Exactly - just the melodic motifs that are used to build the variations in
Peacock.
Things like

or

or, building into an exercise...

If you can play the Peacock variations fluently, you are doing fine.
