In order to track down the cause of your problem please answer following
questions:
* What version of sbackup do you use? Installed from?
* What distribution do you use?
* Do local backups work?
* Do you run as superuser or regular user?

Same thing for me on Linux Mint Katia with 2.6.38-8-generic-pae kernel.
Note that notification icon appears but always says Collecting files
information.
