10.04. (this was what I originally wanted to write). I have nssbackup
running on my multimedia machine using a 10.04 with scheduled backups.
Please, can you provide more background information in order to track down the
problem:

Very interesting. I've never seen this error before and I've tested on
Ubuntu 8.04 ... 9.10. What distribution are you using?

The backup destination is a ftp server. The expected full backup size is
between 50 and 80 GB. It tries to make a full backup and don't end. I
never come to the point where incremental backups are made. I use the
latest version from the PPA.

I get this error on every backup try. I never get a finished full
backup. The backup goes to a ftp server. The X-Server is running all the
time. I use the latest version from the PPA.

You're correct in that the app did not create /root (i.e. it already
existed): sorry about the confusion. I included the /root directory by
selecting root from under Places after clicking Add Directory for
Include. Backup of /root was done. I expected backup of / to be done, as
per Simple Backup. O
