I have seen that this error went away if I perform a full backup. After
that, all subsequent incremental backups are good. Until it reappears and I
have to force a full backup again.

No, the project is active (though there was little activity in the last few
weeks)
Basically, your problem is not directly related to SBackup. TAR is not
able to finish sucessfully and this issue is reported by SBackup. In
order to track down the cause of the problem some more information are
required. Please answer the following questions:
* Is the bug reproducible; does it happen every time?
* is your backup destination on a local drive or remote?
* do you run sbackup as superuser (root) or as regular user?
* Do backups work in general for you?
* Do manual backups (started from Configuration GUI) work as expected?
* How do you invoke the backup process?
