To monitor backup sanity, as well as monitor backup storage space, it is very 
useful to know how large individual backups are.
If you see one that is (much) smaller than expected, something may have gone 
wrong.
If your backup device is filling up, you may first want to remove the larger 
old snapshots.
P.s., as I'm already on the developers team, I would be happy to take this on 
(time allowing). However I'd need someone give me some pointers on where to 
start.
