Hey Jean-Pierre,

That works wonderfully, except that for some reason all of the white
space between paragraphs is gone in the second column. I'm not sure why
since I have...

[NTG-context] Unequal width columns

2016-08-08 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I am trying to typeset a document similar to below:

http://www.heptalysis.com/downloads/heptalysis_executive_summary_templa
te.pdf

My issue is with creating two columns of unequal width. As you can see
the left column is smaller than the right side. I've tried the
following:

\startcolumns[n=2,rule=on]
...left side contents...
\column
...right side contents...
\stopcolumns

Is there no way to set the first column to, say, 0.33\textwidth ?

Regards,

Yes, probably.

 Get the value of HTTP_USER_AGENT and send the replacement text, if

I'll give that some thought. Thank you.

[NTG-context] Bad PDF to text crawlers

2015-08-19 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I have an important document online that I would prefer to keep as a PDF
and not in another format. Unfortunately bots frequently try to provide
those looking for it with a text version they try to extract (beyond my
control). The extraction looks just absolutely awful and has been a
major pain in leaving readers with a really bad understanding of the
contents of the document.

I was thinking that there must be some way of tricking these bots,
depending on how they are implemented, and let's assume they will always
find the PDF, to get them to extract only a small invisible layer that
just contains some hidden text directing a user to the location to
download the original high quality ConTeXt PDF.

Any suggestions?

Hey Joshua,

I'm looking more for a journal article format, so even if you managed to

not useful for this type of situation.

Thanks a lot anyways for the offer.

 yes, it's known and it's ok, because luajittex is not different from
 luatex as luatex is different from pdftex/xetex/etex
 (and if it's so, then it is an error).
 A quick check could be
 \startluacode
 if jit==nil then print(=This is not luajitTeX) else
 print(=You are running luajitTeX ) end
 \stopluacode
 of course one can write a global
 jit ={} also in luatex.
 Another one used in the log is
 \startluacode
 print(===..string.lower(status.banner))
 \stopluacode
 and you can search for luajittex .

 My wish is that luajittex should be 100% compatible with luatex, but
 unfortunately there are some differences between lua5.1 used by luajit2.0
 and lua5.2
 that makes this wish currently impossible to satisfied at engine level ---
 ConTeXt is smart enough to manage these differences, but you can still
 write
 a lua script that is valid for lua5.2 but not for luajit2.0, see for
 example
  http://lua-users.org/lists/lua-l/2010-03/msg00237.html

 Full compatibility between lua5.2 and luajit2.0, for what I see, is not on
 the top on the Mike Pall's agenda.

Thanks Luigi. That was pretty comprehensive.

For my purposes, it makes no different to me whether I am using luatex
or luajittex. However, in my document's front matter I like to have
general information about the tools used to typeset the document, and
for that reason I thought it would be nice if there was a simple and
elegant way to show which backend was used.

Hey Hans. I managed to sort this out by adding a space between the

 no, more with an unexpandable or undefined command being used which then
 ends up \likethis which confuses lua as \l is no escape (change between
 lua 5.1 and 5.2)

Yes, I managed to solve this by removing an escaped pound sign ('\#' -
'') in one of my BibTeX references. If I wanted to keep the pound sign,
what is the proper way to escape it in my BibTeX database?

Thanks Hans.

This was solved as well by removing an escaped pound sign in one of my

[NTG-context] Euler Constant and limit

2012-11-24 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I am trying to typeset the Verhulst equation which contains a Euler
constant which I cannot get to display correctly:

\placeformula[formula:Verhulst equation]
\startformula
\math{P(t) = \frac{K P_0 \Eulerconst^{rt}}
  {K + P_0(\Eulerconst^{r t} - 1)}}
\stopformula

The location for the \Eulerconst just shows up blank with nothing there,
so I am assuming this is the wrong command. I am using ConTeXt
2012.11.16 under Ubuntu Precise.

In addition, the following formula does not typeset correctly. There is
no arrow linking 't' to infinity symbol:

\placeformula[formula:Limit of Verhulst equation]
\startformula
\math{\lim_{t\to\infty} P(t) = K.\,}

[NTG-context] Clarification on methods of toggling maximum compression

2012-08-10 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I've noticed at least three methods of setting what I think is the
generated PDF to maximum compression.

\setupbackend[level=9]
\pdfcompresslevel9
\maximumpdfcompression

Are these all redundant? Do they do different things? Do I need but one
to achieve the desired maximum compression of the resulting PDF?

Hey Hans. My document shrinks from about 70 MB to 20MB with compression.
But back to my original question, do I need all three or are they all
redundant and only one of them I actually need? If only one is

 yes, that's best because as soon as that command is called, the set
 value of 'level' is used, no matter what other values has been set

Here is the result of some experimentation:

23,396,929 Bytes using just \setupbackend[level=9].

21,945,243 Bytes using the aforementioned, \pdfcompresslevel9, and
\maximumpdfcompression.

23,396,827 Bytes using none of those three.

So I guess I'm still not sure which one to use since the one you said
should be sufficient doesn't seem to compress it fully.

 never use \pdf* commands directly .. way too low level and use the oher

 concerning 'broken' ... that's what you have with betas ... most recent

Ah I see.

 the problem reported by you (as wolfgang already pointed out) relates to
 the fact that (from now on) such commands have to be defined
 unexpandable (due to a different way of checking them) .. also, some of
 these 'command' options will be (or are already) replaced by setups

Sorry, I'm a little lost. Are you referring to within the ConTeXt source
or do you mean that users need to modify their typesetting commands they
are using for their documents?

This is just a piece of advice from one programmer to another, but it
might be useful if you use some kind of unit testing framework with
ConTeXt since most of the nightlies it seems are usually broken for
somebody. You just need some test cases, e.g. people's documents that
draw on as many features as possible.

[NTG-context] PDF Preview Image

Hey list,

Many different desktop environments display the first page of a PDF as
the file's thumbnail image. Is there any way to customize what is used
as the preview image for a PDF with ConTeXt? Or is it typesetting
environment agnostic and the thumbnailers always look for the first
page?

[NTG-context] Page Backgrounds

2012-07-08 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

On the cover page of my book I'd like just an image displayed and
another image used as the background for every other page in the book.
So I put this in my environment,

% Cover image...
\definelayer
[CoverImage]
[x=0mm, y=0mm,
 \paperwidth,
 \paperheight]
\setupbackgrounds[page][background=CoverImage]

\setlayer
[CoverImage]% name of the layer
{\externalfigure
[Makeup/Images/Cover.jpg]
[align=center,
 \paperwidth,
 \paperheight]} % the actual contents of the layer

% Regular background image...
\definelayer
[BackgroundImage]
[x=0mm, y=0mm,
 \paperwidth,
 \paperheight,
 repeat=yes]

\setlayer
[BackgroundImage] % name of the layer
{\externalfigure
[Makeup/Images/Background.png]
[align=center,
 \paperwidth,
 \paperheight]} % the actual contents of the layer

, the following in the book's first page,

\setupbackgrounds[page][background=CoverImage]

, and the following on second page,

\setupbackgrounds[page][background=BackgroundImage]

. But this does not work properly. What ends up happening is the cover
image is displayed correctly, but every page after that just has a blank
white background.

Hey Wolfgang. I patched the file as recommended and still the same error
message.

 @Kip: When you make a change in a core file you have to regenerate the format
 (context --make).

I always clear ~/.texmf-var after updating ConTeXt. But I also ran
context --make as well this time, although that is run automatically
when ~/.texmf-var is empty, no? Regardless, I did both prior to
recompiling and got the same error.

[NTG-context] Space Between Number and Reference

2012-06-21 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I am dumping all of my references into an appendix with the following:

\placepublications[criterium=all]

It works great for references 1 to 9, but anything longer than a single
digit and the actual reference text just ends up being superimposed
over it instead of shifting over.

I'm guessing there is a setup for this somewhere.

[NTG-context] Increase textbackground page break white space

2012-05-08 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

Some of my textbackgrounds occupy more than one page and break part way
through them, as expected. Where their containing text is split at the
page break, I am finding that the frame is too close to the contents. So
I'd like to increase the white space of the bottom and top of the
textbackground's frame and content where it splits across a page.

This is what I have been using so far:

\definetextbackground[SomeTextBackground]
   [location=paragraph,
color=color_text,
background=color,
backgroundcolor=colour_text_background_shaded,
frame=on,
framecolor=colour_text,
topoffset=0.5cm,
bottomoffset=0.5cm,
leftoffset=0.5cm,
rightoffset=0.5cm,
before={
\blank[2*big]
},
after={
\blank[2*big]
},
style=smalltype,
corner=round]

I've been trying to solve this problem for months without any luck.

 Don’t use \textcomma in MkIV, it’s a math symbol and doesn’t scale
 when you change the relative font size.

Would this be better then?

\setupnote[footnote]

[NTG-context] Interactive image

2012-04-19 Thread Kip Warner
Hey list,

I am typesetting some images with \externalfigure. I'd like to make some
of them interactive such that clicking on them invokes a URL, but
leaving them without borders.

Is there a recommended way to do this, such as wrapping \externalfigure
in something like the following?

\def\href#1#2{\useURL[#2][{#2}][][{#1}]\goto{\url[#2]}[url(#1)]}

\href{www.something...}{\externalfigure[...]}

Or is there a better way?

Re: [NTG-context] Rendering differences between PDF viewers

 the right thing. Here it obviously fails.

Thanks Martin.
