Regarding your first question try this:

The square root of 2 is \ctxlua{tex.print(math.sqrt(2))}\dots, but
usually the default value
\ctxlua{tex.print(math.floor(1000*math.sqrt(2))/1000)}
is considered to be a good approximation.

(There is also math.ceil)
