I am writing a German critical edition in which I am using endnotes, and I
am encountering severe difficulties with formatting them as I should wish.
The idea is to indent the entire footnote?marker and text?0.5in.
In ConTeXt (Mark II) on XeTeX, I can move the footnote marker with this
set-up:
\definenote[critical][conversion=characters,
way=bychapter,
location=text,
bodyfont=12pt,
margindistance=-.5in,
align=flushleft]
Then I move the text by adding the unsightly but functional hack
\hskip.5into the beginning of the argument of
\critical or \criticaltext. Unfortunately, the endnotes do not flow from
page to page in Mark II, and, from the comments on the source code, it
appears that this cannot be helped. Given the length and number of
endnotes needed for my project, ConTeXt (Mark II) on XeTeX does not seem
viable.
In ConTeXt (Mark IV) on LuaTeX, on the other hand, the endnotes do flow
from page to page, but the formatting does not appear to respond to the
margindistance key. From various related posts, the answer appears to lie
in \setupnotation, but, whenever I attempt to pass this command, I get an
?undefined control sequence? error.
In short, my question is, How do I code indenting each endnote .5in with
the highest degree of automation and fewest hacks possible?

[NTG-context] ConTeXt: Page numbering in words for spanish
Hello there and thanks for finally let me into this mailing list!
So I tried to hack the macro given in the ConTeXt wiki
(http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Page_numbering_in_words) to write pagenumbering
in words in spanish, my native language. Things were great until I had to
reach the 100th page. ConTeXt claims when compiling, but I don't know how to
fix the macro so it can write hundred-numbers.
'Cien' is 100 for spanish. 'Ciento uno' for 101, 'ciento dos' for 102 and so
(You can see a more detailed example in
http://spanish.about.com/cs/forbeginners/a/cardinalnum_beg.htm). So basically
I need to prepend the word 'cien' for each word number from 1 to 99 to write
the one-hundreds, 'doscientos' for the two-hundreds... Here is my dirty hacked
version of the macro (you may save it as 'numstr.tex' for compiling), and a
minimal example as follows:

I'm such a noob with TeX and I cannot figure out how to do this, and I need

(editing the file core-con.lua, as seen in
http://repo.or.cz/w/context.git/blob/HEAD:/tex/context/base/core-con.lua
), 'cause I'm using MkIV for doing this. But I don't know anything about Lua
(seems pretty easy, but I don't know how to test the code Aditya gave me) and
If I knew how to do that, I don't know how to make it work in my document...
All I could do is translate the 'words' array to spanish, but I couldn't do

Maybe there could be parameter like
\setupmarginframed[resetfeatures=(yes|no|underbar|color|…)] …
(I know that underbar is controversial feature, unfortunately in this
special case it's a requirement which I can't change…)

I think he means files of which the name does not have an extension. I.e. he is trying to type a file called 'xxx', not 'xxx.something'. Example of such a file: the shell script /usr/bin/ps2pdf. [NTG-context] Dash equivalent of $BASH_SOURCE (for setuptex)
Hi everyone,
Hans wrote me the following, but I'm unable to figure it out myself.
The script setuptex (which is in fact not urgently needed as one can
just as well export the right path, but it comes in handy) can be used
in two ways:
(a) . /path/to/context/tex/setuptex
(b) . /path/to/context/tex/setuptex /path/to/context/tex
The first approach only works if the shell interpreting setuptex knows
where the sourced script is located.
Currently the script uses the following code and works in Bash, KSH
(and maybe some other shells as well, but I'm not sure which ones).

clue if finding path to the executed script is possible in Dash or in
any other POSIX-compatible way, please let me know.

Fair point. I was concerned more with changeabiltity: this way someone
who writes a new function has an obvious name (numberwords.french) for
her new wordlist, and an obvious single point of alteration for her
copy of verbose.english, namely to change `local words =
numberwords.english` to `...numberwords.french`. (Algorithm tweaks
will still come after that, of course.) The code needs very little
changing. This is a minor point only, of course.

I get the same results using texexec and context which means, if I understand rightly, I have used both MkII and MkIV. Interestingly I get similar results using oft as the pandit output. When I open the doc in LibreOffice the images are all scaled too small. Yet I can right-click each and select an Original Size toggle and they shift to their expected size. But note that I attempted to test the dpi theory by selecting an image and using GIMP to set its dpi to 300 yet that resulted in no visible change. Ok, so what are my alternatives for layouting big projects like books,
with lots of sections?
Of course I could always go through and manually add \page, but that

Hi, As Mojca is moving the distribution to another server we have a few days of potential instability which gives us the change to experiment a bit. I've changed the defaults for the math fonts so that now we use the 'real thing'. However, as there can be issues, one can still say at the top of a document (of in cont-syst.tex): \enablemode[txmath] \enablemode[pxmath] \enablemode[lmmath] The design sized latin modern text font is still the default but one could already change that by \setupbodyfont[modern] There is currently some renaming going on for those math fonts but that should not affect us as context can handle older names too. [NTG-context] intertext (math): alignment problems
Dear all, if I set up my formulas with a right alignment that has some indentation to it, I am experiencing problems with intertext. I would assume the text was flushed left. However, it aligns to the formulas (i.e. it is aligned to the left margin defined in \setupformulas). Minimal example below. If I comment the setupformulas, the equation is aligned to the center and the intertext is flushed left. Any suggestions? I'm not sure that I understand the question.
1. dash (Debian version of the real 100% posix-compatible Borne shell)
but also /bin/sh on freebsd and other Unixes (BSD, sysV or POSIX).
It is the least common denominator for shell scripts on most (if not
all) unix-like systems, as far as I know.
2. $0 will give the the path of the script, unless it is called
as ./script or script (in the current directory). In this case it
will probably be ./script or by pathtoscript/script in which case
it will return pathtoscript/script. The current directory can then be
found by `pwd` or $PWD
3 Sourcing the script (not calling it as an executable) as
source script or . script will return as $0 /bin/bash or
/usr/local/bin/bash or /bin/sh or whatever shell is in use.
This is your problem, I believe.
There does not seem to be a way to determine the path to a script
under a Borne shell if the script is SOURCED and not EXECUTED.
Of course, a script that is executed runs a sub-shell and so this
cannot be used to set variables, even environmental variables, for the
calling shell.

I suggest that you use 'identify' from ImageMagick to check your graphics. identify -verbose foo.jpg One graphic has a defined resolution (72ppi) and one has none. I also use ImageMagick to automatically add the resolution info to the graphics. No problems with graphic sizes since then. Here is the simplyfied content of a batch file that I normally use... for %%i in (*.png) do convert -units PixelsPerInch -set density 96 %%i The important thing is, that you use PNG as graphic format, when you make your screenshots. JPG isn't lossless and any re-compression (e.g. by adding an arrow, clipping) makes things even worse. Convert them to JPG in the very last step (if you must). Also: how about scaling your browser to 200% before you take your screenshots? Well, that lead to an interesting experiment. I used convert to -resample a set of images to 300dpi and redid the compile. They are all now too bod, many off the right side of the page. Then did the same but set to 72. They are still too big. Odd, from too small to too big. I will try and be a bit more precise and craft a text doc to play with this and report the results. There exist also virtual versions of these fonts; these virtual versions are essentially the body font counterparts with lots of display-modifying tweaks piled on to make them behave like math fonts. These virtual versions were used for a time while the math fonts were in development. If you still want to use the virtual fonts, you can write \enablemode[txmath,pxmath,lmmath] at the top of your document. This does not set the math font directly, but specifies that if the Pagella/Termes/LM math font is used, ConTeXt should use the virtual font rather than the non-virtual one. Futher: I see in math-vfu.lua the following comment: There are still areas where the virtuals are better. Which areas are these? [NTG-context] Arabic with ConTeXt
Hello,
many books I layout have arabic words or complete paragraphs in it -
where the main language is german. For example there is a book, which is
completely in arabic with german translation.
My present method to write in Arabic is, for sure, not the best, f.e. I
have problems with arabic numbers (which are printed mirrored), problems
with brackets and so on.
I have two questions, hopefully there is an expert for questions
concerning Arabic or similar quests:
First: How to divide the page into a left part and a right part, two
wright german on the left side and arabic on the right. Is \paragraph
the best way for it?
Second: Which is your recommended way to type arabic with ConTeXt? I add
mine in this Mail, please give me advises to improve it.

P.S.: If gridsetting with arabic is possible, then I would prefer that.
But if not (see my non-gridsetting solution with \placeongrid), it's ok
for me.

problem, but something seems really weird. Why on earth does it want
to load files from /usr/local/lib/lua/5.1 and why does it want to load
a binary module instead of a lua file? (I don't have that folder, but
even if I had it, pgfplots wouldn't be there)

What you are looking for is text streams. They are not yet fully
functional in mkiv. But as long as you need the streams to appear
as columns on the same page, as seems to be the case, there is a
cheap workaround using the *tabulate* environment (see below).
The great thing about \{start,stop}tabulate is that it allows for
page breaks inside paragraphs of arbitrary length.

Hi Hans,
I think the verbose.spanish code you put in the latest beta broke
verbose.english: after verbose.english is defined, a second `local
verbose = { }` at the start of the spanish code accidentally
overwrites that table.
The code below works; as a bonus, it fixes the bug where 900 was
printed as 'nine hundred zero'. It can replace the entire swath of
verbose-related code, right up to the handlers. (The English part is
mostly untouched; only that bugfix, and a tweak to use the `local
words = words.english` idiom)
Known bugs:
* 100 before 'mil' should be 'cien mil'
* 100 on its own should be 'cien'
* 100 before 'millón' -- should that be 'cien millón', or 'ciento millón'?
* what are the rules for e.g. '1001' -- should that be 'mil y una'?
And should 1004 also be mil y cuatro?
Acidrums: if you put this in core-con.lua, replacing everything
between the commands.ordinal and converters.verbose function
definitions, then run context --make cont-en, does the output look
okay to you? Also: thank you for the day and month tables!

Acidrums: if you put this in core-con.lua, replacing everything
between the commands.ordinal and converters.verbose function
definitions, then run context --make cont-en, does the output look
okay to you? Also: thank you for the day and month tables!

Just pasted the code you gave after commands.ordinal (there's no
converters.verbose in my core-con.lua) and the context --make cont-en command
worked. But when I tried the minimal ConTeXt example you gave, it claims with
the following:

For the bugs you're talking about, I would say this:
* 100 before 'mil' should be 'cien mil' - Yes, it should be like that.
* 100 on its own should be 'cien' - Same thing here.
* 100 before 'millón' -- should that be 'cien millón', or 'ciento millón'? -
It should be 'cien millones'. 'Millones', plural for 'Millón'. Maybe it should
be a variable for plurals for millions (the only plural used for numbers in
spanish).
* what are the rules for e.g. '1001' -- should that be 'mil y una'? - It
should be 'mil uno' (just put the '1' word after the '1000' word).
And should 1004 also be mil y cuatro? - Like before, it should be 'mil
cuatro': the '4' word after the '1000' word.

I have reinstalled ConTeXt and run both luatools --generate and mtxrun --generate.
