[NTG-context] small new feature on the wiki
Hi there, since there might be some users here who edit pages on the wiki and who don't read the 'recent changes' page: you can now say context source=yes text=produces \your \TeX \code=here /context this will typeset the source with the texcode/texcode highlighter/formatter, then output the (optional) text 'produces', and finally renders the already known graphical representation of the source. This way you only have to enter the code once (less errors). Special thanks to Jano Kula for this. [NTG-context] texgyre - first release
Hi, At http://www.gust.org.pl/e-foundry/tex-gyre/ you can fetch the first release of the texgyre collection. This font project aims at merging the existing free fonts (now spread over original, quasi and vn collections). The first stage is a mere merge and as with latin modern, the authors will converge to a stable consistent set of fonts. So ... go ahead and become a tester. Integration in context is rather easy. (1) fetch the two zips (base and hh) from the website mentioned (2) put the atteched file in your context/base path (3) run mktexlsr After that, the following should work: \starttext \usetypescriptfile[type-gyr] \usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[palatino] \showfont[Serif] \stoptext so, the magic is in the small typescript file: \usetypescriptfile[type-gyr] this will overload existing definitions. The nice thing is that this project will make many font problems (mostly related to missing files) go away because the names fit context, and the amount of files is reduced enormously (only 4 type 1 files, no virtual fonts, etc) All popular encodings are supported The pagella (based on palladio) also has cyrilic, but we need to figure out a way to integrate this (should be easy) Vietnamese users: please check if things work ok, these fonts contain work done by Han The Thanh and the fonts will eventually replace his variants Polish and neighbouring users: these fonts will replace the quasi variants. Keep in mind that this is the first version. The shapes will be improved over time. Even more: all fonts eventually will have math companions as well as (in open type) features. This project is substantially funded by the tex user groups (cstug, dante, gust, ntg, tugindia, tug). We hope to involve more user groups in the next stage (math, extensions, etc) so feel free to contact us. On behalf of ythe user groups the project is coordinated by Jerzy while the dev team is lead by Jacko. The next few years more fonts will be released. At the next bachotek [eurotex organized by pl/cs] there will be the first formal releases + presentations about them, so better be there ... [NTG-context] Version Numbers in Download File Names
Hi! Pardon me for requesting more support from pragma-ade prior to ever using the mailing list for general support questions. Maybe I should post this one directly to Hans but others might be interested in this issue as well. Despite my little but growing knowledge of Context I am currently evaluating its suitability for document building in our company (our workflow is currently Latex-based). A prime aspect of our company's work is to follow well-defined processes, and as part of that, we have to be able to refer to specific versions of applications that are used in the development of our projects. When used, this would apply to Context as well. Obviously, downloading from pragma-ade gives version numbers only on the entry pages like http://www.pragma-ade.nl/download-1.htm next to the links to the files, but the package files themselves like http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/current/cont-tmf.zip don't have versioned names (not mentioning that Context and its modules actually _do_ report version numbers as dates upon use). Is there a strong motivation against having versioned package file names, possibly with some months/years of history? Has this support feature ever been considered by pragma-ade or asked for by their (non-)paying customers? Or is this archive available but I am unable to find it? ;) Just an example: Instead of http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/current/cont-tmf.zip use a browseable directory like http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/archive/ containint files like http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/archive/cont-tmf-20060518.zip http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/archive/cont-tmf-20060601.zip http://www.pragma-ade.nl/context/archive/cont-tmf-20060629.zip and possibly set /context/current/cont-tmf.zip as an internal file system link to the latest file in /context/archive/ for those interested only in the latest version. The proposed method could be applied to all other download files as well. That way and as long as the archive files are available, a precise version of Context could be fetched from pragma-ade's server without maintaining a local versioned archive of cont.tmf.zip etc. Referral to a specific version of Context would be a lot easier, and documenting the tools used for a project would be a lot simpler. A common understanding of a Context version, reflected in its package file name, would reduce the effort of those responsible for local version control and install package maintenance. [NTG-context] slightly OT: presentation tool
As the subject line says, this is slightly OT, but it may be of interest to some. If you produce your presentations in ConTeXt and want to show the resulting pdf, you have to use a pdf-viewer. I just hate Adobe Reader with its bloat and its intrusiveness; other solutions (such as evince and xpdf on linux) had smaller problems as well. I have recently found a relatively small python solution that i like a lot; I hasten to add that I'm in no way affiliated with the developers; I just have installed it and use it a lot. It's called keyjnote; it's free (as in beer), and it offers a lot of nice eye-candy during presentations of pdf-files such as nice transitions, a sorted view that shows all slides in one window and lets you choose one, and the possibility to highlight parts of the screen with your mouse pointer. There are some disadvantages: it has a lot of pythonish dependencies (on OS X, I could install them via darwinports, but it's a lot more difficult on most linux distros), it needs opengl support, and a reasonably fast machine. But it costs nothing to just have a look at it: http://keyjnote.sourceforge.net/ And I find that it makes presentations done in ConTeXt look even better! Two comments nevertheless. https://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/?group_id=14 gives me quite some versions of Context, but the download paths for each precise version is not related to the release date or the SVN revision, for example, the 20060609 release can be downloaded as https://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/download.php/305/cont-tmf.zip. Can't it be something like https://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/download.php/cont-tmf-20060609.zip, or in case of true SVN snapshots maybe https://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/download.php/cont-tmf-164.zip having '164' as the associated SVN repository revision number? That would be easy to maintain in subsequent application packages for Context. Certainly, supelec.fr and gforge.org have the last word on this issue. Anyway, thanks for the link, it is a big step towards a solution. Second: I tried to checkout the repository anonymously as mentioned on https://foundry.supelec.fr/scm/?group_id=14 without success (it asks me for username/password). Either anonymous read-only access should be enabled as documented, or the documentation on this page should change (but why should the repository be publicly browseable as well as versioned snapshots be publicly available without proper public Subversion access?). In case cont-tmf.zip is a simple consistent snapshot of the (then) publicly available SVN repository, the problem of versioning would vanish in a second, I'd just have to refer to the associated SVN revision of the tree. Matthias Wächter wrote: So you take the official, newly released .zip file, unpack it to the checked out Subversion copy, and commit the changes using your name and the release date as commit text (no change tracking using information from the Release Notes or the prime version control system),? Almost correct, you missed a step: Take the official, newly released .zip file, unpack it, *generate Release Notes*, copy to checked out Subversion .. etc It's not that Context development is actually performed on supelec.fr, is it? Correct, ConTeXt Revisions is a museum, development takes place at Pragma-ADE, on Hans' internal file server. Looks like a lot of effort (riding the horse backwards). It is a lot of effort, although quite a bit is automated by now. But almost everything else would mean extra work for Hans (who does development almost single-handedly) and it would not help me overmuch either because, in general, you cannot trust ChangeLog/ CommitLog entries :-/ Generating Release Notes and publishing to CTAN are by far the biggest of my tasks as far as manual labour goes. So: Why is Context development not performed on a public SVN repository? Hans' convenience (as indicated above). Hans has an infrastructure set up already, and that structure predates public SVN by quite a few years. Switching would result in a temporary loss of productivity that is hard to justify. Especially so, since Hans is not only the lead also almost the only developer. The whole release procedure would be a lot simpler then ... Am I too progressive asking this? ;) Perhaps you are ;-) For the 'Files' section, it could actually be retrofitted, by rearranging the uploaded files (and uploading a few hundred extra zip files that are now skipped). I will happily give anybody who wants to do such a project enough gforge permissions to do so ;-) I don't understand precisely what actions you mean. Maybe together we can work out a better 'Files' section. Mostly renaming a few hunderd uploaded files using the web interface. Not very hard in itself, but tedious and error-prone (and I simply do not have time for it right now). Second: I tried to checkout the repository anonymously as mentioned on https://foundry.supelec.fr/scm/?group_id=14 without success That is odd, because it should have worked. I will investigate Thank you very much! Just a configuration hint (actually I don't know how much access you have to the various SVN config files on supelec.fr): (Will forward this to Fabrice Popineau, thank you very much) Cheers, Taco ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

I am sorry not having taken a look into the ruby scripts, but my ruby knowledge is nihil. The tex input file would be more useful. The mpgraph file is autogenerated from that, after all. I am afraid that isn't possible just now. The problem seems very specific in the placing of the footnote (narrow margin of error) and after editing my current text it has vanished. It looks like one of those erratic problems that tend to occur mostly when one is in a hurry. Seeing the value of the shift: PlainTextArea:=boundingbox((95.23926pt,72.9016pt)--(95.23926pt, 72.9016pt); shifted (609.52148pt,476.59792pt));; and considering I am using pages with a reduced height, I suspect this is just about equivalent to 1 \textheight. But the point is that inside a metapost statement boundingbox ... shifted ... a ; has appeared and that cannot be good. Sorry not having a minimal example at hand at the moment. When less pressed for time I will do some experiments with changing pagefill (I guess best done by placing rules of varying height). Surely I will contact again if I found such an example. [NTG-context] ConTeXt + XeTeX + Adobe Bembo Std = ???
I've been trying to figure out how to use Bembo Std (an OpenType font from Adobe) in ConTeXt + XeTeX. The example on the _Fonts in XeTeX_ page in the wiki works fine except for small caps, which (not surprisingly) don't show up in this first attempt: \definetypeface[bembo][rm][Xserif][Bembo Std] \setupbodyfont[bembo] \starttext Bembo {\bf Bembo} {\it Bembo} {\sc Bembo} Bembo. \stoptext Small caps are present in the font (feature smcp according to otfinfo), as this minimal example shows: \definetypeface[bembo][rm][Xserif][Bembo Std:mapping=tex-text;+kern;+onum;+liga] \setupbodyfont[bembo,11pt] \setupbodyfontenvironment[default][em=italic] \def\it{\definedfont[Bembo Std-Italic:mapping=tex-text;+kern;+onum;+liga]} \def\bf{\definedfont[Bembo Std-Bold:mapping=tex-text;+kern;+onum]} \def\sc{\definedfont[Bembo Std:mapping=tex-text;+smcp;+kern;+onum]} \starttext Bembo {\bf Bembo} {\it Bembo} {\sc Bembo} Bembo. \stoptext But that's a hack. So I create a file type-bembo.tex: \starttypescript[bembo][uc] \definetypeface [bembo] [rm] [serif] [Bembo Std] [default] [encoding=uc] \definefontsynonym[BemboRegular][Bembo Std:mapping=tex-text] [encoding=uc] \definefontsynonym[BemboItalic] [Bembo Std-Italic:mapping=tex-text][encoding=uc] \definefontsynonym[BemboBold] [Bembo Std-Bold:mapping=tex-text] [encoding=uc] \definefontsynonym[BemboCaps] [Bembo Std:mapping=tex-text;+smcp] [encoding=uc] \stoptypescript \starttypescript[serif][bembo][name] \definefontsynonym[Serif] [BemboRegular] \definefontsynonym[SerifItalic] [BemboItalic] \definefontsynonym[SerifBold] [BemboBold] \definefontsynonym[SerifCaps] [BemboCaps] \definefontsynonym[SerifSlanted][BemboItalic] \definefontsynonym[SerifBoldItalic] [BemboBold] \definefontsynonym[SerifBoldSlanted][BemboBold] \stoptypescript And a test file in the same directory as the typescript file: \usetypescriptfile[type-bembo] \usetypescript[bembo][uc] \setupbodyfont[bembo,11pt] \starttext Bembo {\bf Bembo} {\it Bembo} {\sc Bembo} Bembo. \stoptext Now I get small caps all right, but everything's in Computer Modern. :-( What am I doing wrong? [NTG-context] Typing some blocks in single column, some in two columns.
All, We have a bunch of questions and answers in blocks. \beginquestion \startquestion \stopquestion \endquestion \beginlonganswer \startquestion \stopquestion \endlonganswer \beginshortanswer \startquestion \stopquestion \endshortanswer The difficulty is some long answers are to complex to typeset in two column mode, but then some will fit in two column mode quite nicely. We'd like to use two column mode when we can. When we are typsetting the longanswer, we have a good idea whether its bound for one or two column mode. We might have 8 longanswers that will fit in two column mode, followed by 10 that have to be typeset in single column mode, followed by the rest in two column mode. So, is it possible to tag a longanswer block for single or two column typsetting?
