Re: [NTG-context] postponed block and headers

2006-11-16 Thread Paul Jones

Below is somewhat of a silly example, but it does show the problem I am
experiencing. It looks like the commands inside of the postponing block can
not effect the headers. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? The
only way I have been able to change the headers is to place a \page[blank]
at the beginning of my postponed block, but then there are no headers for
the rest of the document. Basically I just want there to be no headers on
any page where I postpone a block. Any help would be much appreciated

It needs to be given as '--paperformat'. I'm pretty sure '--paper'
gets disambiguated as --paperoffset, so ConTeXt looks for a dimension
but gets "A5A4", and then complains about a missing number.

Re: [NTG-context] Problems with texexec & pdfarrange

2006-11-16 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
> in my opinion the print command option is --print=2up

It shouldn't matter (2up vs up). The tex.rb script has this:

case getvariable('printformat')
when '' then arrangement << "\\v!normal"
when /.*up/oi then arrangement << ["2UP","\\v!rotated"]
when /.*down/oi then arrangement << ["2DOWN","\\v!rotated"]
when /.*side/oi then arrangement << ["2SIDE","\\v!rotated"]
end

So --printformat looks whether 'up', 'down', or 'side' is given as the
key and then chooses 2UP, 2DOWN, or 2SIDE accordingly.

[NTG-context] Problems with \fillinfield

2006-11-16 Thread Fredrik Sjunnesson
Hi,

PDF fields created with \fillinfield lose their filled in values as soon as
they lose focus.

I have tried several different documents, including mwidget-s.pdf, with the
latest Acrobat Reader on both Linux and Windows but I always get the same
result.

Any others with similar problems?

[NTG-context] Bug in Description?

2006-11-16 Thread Karsten Heymann
Hello,

I need to mimick enumerated lists with descriptions, as the list
labels are passed to
context by an external program. For this I need the text after the
label indented
exactly as far as the following lines. Following the wiki I set
distance=0cm, but this
does not seem to be honored, but setting it to a very small value does
work. So I suppose it's a bug.

no need for that ; it is made to run in parallel, just an extra zip with
mkiv and lua files ending up in base, and luatools.lua ending up in the script
path; also, mkiv does not use kpse -)

Ok, but what about font embedding ? I precisely like to proceed the plot
as mp code because of the embedding of fonts...
I explain: when I began ConTeXt, I included plots as pdf from
LaTeX+PStricks and I observed an annoying fact, i.e. the fonts are
embedded twice !
For this reason, when I heard of a context (via mp) term, I tried it...
with success...

[NTG-context] beta -> current

2006-11-16 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,

We've gone current with the beta. Next week there will be release notes
as well as the formal tex live/collection code freeze.

Apart from the usual bug fixes and extensions, the most noticeable
change is that from now on there are also mkii files (and mkiv as well
as lua files for those testing luatex). Next year, when the TeXGyre
project has released all new base fonts, there will be a switch to using
these fonts instead of the existing variants, for this release, one has
to load type-gyr. There has been some organizational changes to the
metapost inclusion (mptopdf uses supp-pdf, while context itself uses an
[to be futher] optimized version as a prelude to mkiv conversion).

If you want to know to what extend luatex will influence context, keep
an eye on the mk.pdf document (or read the coming Maps, TugBoat or other
user group magazines) which (will) describe some experiments, history
and usage.

Hm. Just typeset fontstrips, scale the doc up/down on the screen and
find the best visual match. You need to do that only once for a given
combination of fonts. In most cases i use lm for monospaced and palatino
for math when combined with other fonts, and my experience is that one
really need to typeset some text (with e.g. inline verbatim) in order to
find out what value is best.

The problem is that in that case, we would end up with 4 line
definitions replaced by 4 line definitions; ok, when we have luatex, we
can think of some aux macros (\rscaled{"fontname"}) because then fully
expandable solutions are possible.

Adam Lindsay made/had plans for predefined typefaces and actually that
is then the best way to go: predefine interesting combinations of fonts
with optimized values for relative scaling and ht/dp ratios.

But at least on Windows that's relatively transparent. You tell
fontconfig once where your fonts are (e.g. c:\windows\fonts), and that's
it, basically.

Thanks for your answer, Aditya. After I sent the message, I found
somewhere that \setupheads[indentnext=yes] did what I wanted.

If you want negative indenting, use a negative width, like

Sorry, I'm afraid my description was not accurate. I meant pure negative
indenting, but hanging indentation (what you get when you write
\hang\noindenting at the beginning of the paragraph).

Re: [NTG-context] relative scaling for fonts

But will that work? What is the x-height of a Unicode font (and
AFAIK, XeTeX can't handle any other font) that has Latin and Greek
letters? You have to rely on the fact that the font designer will
have implemented an equal x-height for all his characters - which is
simply not the case for a majority of fonts, IMHO. So I'm not sure
that this is a necessary or useful thing to have. When all is said
and done, I still see no possibility other than looking at the
printed page and deciding yourself whether the relation between both
fonts is "right." Btw, most publishers don't seem to bother anymore
and just set the fonts at whatever is their design size. OUP, e.g.,
uses Porson, which is a lot smaller than most Roman fonts, but they
don't scale. I find this horrible, but what I want to say is: there
doesn't seem to be an established typographical practice that could
just be automated.

The reference font would be the roman font and the automated scaling
with the same x-height might be wrong in some cases, but it is a useful
starting point to start learning for newcomers (like me) how to set the
proper visual scaling factor.

My most common scenario for font scaling is not roman with sansserif or
typewritter, but roman Latin with roman Greek characters and setting the
same x-height for both. And I thought there were fine with the same
x-height for both.

My typographical ability wouldn't let my set other relative scaling
factor other than 1 or the same x-height for both fonts.
