 One might like to treat every ij as a single letter and then convert
 both I and J to uppercase when asked for that.

yes, but not i+j may be ij

 I read that Dutch keyboard includes the ij digraph (ij), but the
 Croatian/Serbian keyboards don't include those digraphs and none of
 the cp1250 and iso-8859-2 encodings have it, so everyone writes with
 plain latin letters - I doubt that anyone uses digraphs at all. (It
 would be almost as obscure and inconvenient to write them as if
 someone tried to write with fi unicode ligatures.)

 The main problem is that:
 - ligature lj is always lowercase
 - ligature Lj is uppercase, but only at the beginning of a word where
 other letters are lowercase (Ljubljana)
 - ligature LJ is uppercase, but only at the beginning of a word where
 other letters are uppercase (LJUBJANA)

well, in utf it should be ok, since then we use info from the tables

Re: [NTG-context] new upload

2007-08-27 Thread Arthur Reutenauer
 I do not really understand unicode. I will try to figure out which
 unicode characters need special consideration, and then make up the
 specs.

  In Unicode the most important dash-or-hyphen-like characters are:

U+002D HYPHEN-MINUS (-): The “usual” ASCII character with an ambiguous
  meaning (hyphen? minus?);

U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN (): Indicate a line break opportunity, no visible glyph;

U+2010 HYPHEN (‐): Carries the “hyphenation” meaning of
  hyphen-minus; preferred over the latter to indicate a visible hyphen;

U+2011 NON-BREAKING HYPHEN (‑): Well ... a  hyphen, but non-breaking;

U+2012 FIGURE DASH (‒): Same ambiguous meaning as hyphen-minus, but
  has the same width as digits;

U+2013 EN DASH (–): Used to indicate ranges of values (1910–2007);
  the equivalent to TeX's “--” ligature;

U+2014 EM DASH (—): Used to separate quotes—like this—; the
  equivalent to TeX's “---” ligature.

  The above is an extract of the “Dashes and hyphen” paragraph of
section 6.2 of the Unicode Standard
(http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.0.0/ch06.pdf).
You might also want to look into the Unicode line breaking properties
for a complete description (http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr14/). I can
summarize that for you if you want.

2007-08-27 Thread Arthur Reutenauer
 Don't ask me why it works when used as a module, but fails when module
 documentation has to be typeset.

  Actually the second problem happens when one uses your file with Mark II
as well: ConTeXt tries to expand \savebuffer and finds a \ctxlua which
it doesn't know, since it is running pdfTeX. You should really check for
\ctxlua instead of \savebuffer in the line you added (\ifx\ctxlua\undefined
...);
\savebuffer is defined anyway (in core-buf.tex) but when running Mark II
it expands to something pdfTeX doesn't understand.

Try
kpsewhich cont-en.fmt
or
   locate cont-en.fmt (after running updatedb)
It should point you to [something]/we2c/pdftex/cont-en.fmt
Remove all the .fmt files inside that folder
([something]/we2c/*/*.fmt): well, at least cont-en, you may leave the
latex format files untouched if any.

Then run
texexec --make --all
and try again.

Hello,

I use fink's ghostscript. I'm almost sure that the problem lies in GS;
that report cannot come from ConTeXt (unless pstopdf does some nasty
things with eps documents which then confuse gs - it does delete some
portions from ps files, but I doubt that that could be the problem). I
have no idea whom to report anything. (Gerben said he had stopped with
user support, and he probably cannot reproduce the error if it's
really inconsistent behaviour - that it works one time and not the
other time.)

Do you have fink already installed? (If yes, try to install
ghostscript from there.)

I would suggest you to try running pstopdf on some random postscript
document once you spot the error, and see what happens. Perhaps you
can try running pstopdf on that document after an unsuccesfull ConTeXt
run ...

Unless others have any better ideas ...

 Thanks :)

  Try to install TeXLive 2007.

 I will, but I'm afraid I am not good enough for porting it to the
 FreeBSD ports.

Doesn't something already exist on the link above (I didn't read
carefully and I wasn't sure about the FreeBSD/OpenBSD relation)?

  Does
  locate uzcmi8t
  return you anything?

 No, no matches found here.

That means that you don't have those fonts (or that they have different names).

  Try to install TeXLive 2007 or minimal ConTeXt distribution.

 I like ConTeXt a lot, so I will try to install a minimal ConTeXt
 distribution in my $HOME first, and if that fails I will go the
 TeXLive route some time during September.

Well, I forgot that there are no minimals for FreeBSD

 For now, I will have to stick with the CM fonts for a while, and
 finish writing the documents which I want to write.

OK, so here is what you need to do to install the non-existing minimals:

Step 1: download from PRAGMA:

wget -c http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/justtex.zip
wget -c http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/linuxtex.zip

unzip  justtex.zip
unzip linuxtex.zip

Step 2: download binaries from TeXLive 2007 and prepare a freebsd binary folder

cd tex
mkdir texmf-freebsd
cd texmf-freebsd
svn co svn://tug.org/texlive/trunk/Master/bin/i386-freebsd
mv i386-freebsd bin
# perhaps also
chmod 755 bin/*
mv ../texmf-linux/web2c .
cd ..
rm -r texmf-linux

Step 3: patch setuptex

Find the following ines in setuptex:

export TEXARCH=`uname -m`
export TEXUNIX=`uname -s`

if [ $TEXARCH = x86_64 ] ;  then
export TEXMFOS=$TEXROOT/texmf-linux-64 ;
fi

if [ $TEXUNIX = Darwin ] ;  then
export TEXMFOS=$TEXROOT/texmf-macosx ;
fi

and add a hardcoded line below them
export TEXMFOS=$TEXROOT/texmf-freebsd

Step 4: First setup

Run
. setuptex
mktexlsr
texexec --make --all
texexec --make --all --xtx
# don't worry about those below yet if they don't work
luatools --generate
texexec --make --all --lua

Step 5: compile your document
cd your-folder
texexec your-file

Step 6: next time
cd folder-with-setuptex
. setuptex
(I've put that command to .bashrc)

If you want TeXLive 2007:
svn co svn://tug.org/texlive/trunk/Master
./install-live.sh

You can install it in such a way that it doesn't interfere with your old system.

  I will, but I'm afraid I am not good enough for porting it to the
  FreeBSD ports.

 Doesn't something already exist on the link above (I didn't read
 carefully and I wasn't sure about the FreeBSD/OpenBSD relation)?

OpenBSD has a port in current (it will make 4.3, to be released in
2008-05). FreeBSD clings to tetex. :-{

ConTeXt has the functionality for most of amstex macros. The syntax is
a bit different from amstex, it is a bit more contextish. See

On my system, fmtuil-sys puts the cont-en.fmt formats in

but the context tools put them under texmf-config, so it
is all easy to end up with multiple versions of the .fmt files.

 According to google this seems to be mac-specific problem, and the
 first think that comes to my mind are problems with GhostScript
 during
 conversion. (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/
 Conceptual/universal_binary/universal_binary.pdf)

 How did you install GhostScript?
 Try which gs, gs --version and gs alone to check some more
 details about the version.

 It seems most likely that I installed GhostScript via Gerben's i-
 installer.

  From apple's Terminal.app:

 Hello,

 I use fink's ghostscript. I'm almost sure that the problem lies in GS;
 that report cannot come from ConTeXt (unless pstopdf does some nasty
 things with eps documents which then confuse gs - it does delete some
 portions from ps files, but I doubt that that could be the problem). I
 have no idea whom to report anything.

Perhaps you
 can try running pstopdf on that document after an unsuccesfull ConTeXt
 run ...

 Unless others have any better ideas ...

 | texmf-var/web2c/pdftex/ and texmf-var/web2c/xetex/,
 | but the context tools put them under texmf-config, so it
 | is all easy to end up with multiple versions of the .fmt files.

 OK, things are back to normal now after I removed cont-en.fmt and
 cont-nl.fmt from my home ~/.texlive2007/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex and /xetex,
 I still don't see where this problem came from as it is not the first time
 I did an update.

The format files in ~/.texlive2007 are generated by fmtutil --all. I
try to remember
to use fmtutil-sys --all so they go in texmf-var.

 The files were not recreated by texexec --make --all.

I doubt texexec knows about ~/.texlive2007 -- that was done so individual users
on multi-user systems could make personal formats without the need for the
intervention of an adminstrator. For safety you might want to
disable context in
the fmtutil configuration. I tend to do a fair bit of pdftex testing
so it is convenient to get the cont-en format when I build the others.

 can you lookup the hex numbers of all those glyphs? (handy as comment)

From http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0080.pdf :

00AB « LEFT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK

usually opening, sometimes closing

00BB » RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK

[NTG-context] MKIV, hz, hanging punctuation

2007-08-27 Thread David Wooten
Greetings all,

Can someone say when typographic extras like hz hanging
punctuation will be available in LuaTeX/MKIV for OpenType fonts? ---
or are they already available? I thought I'd read a comment on this
from Hans, but cannot for the life of me find it.

Best,
David

All spacing related features, except hz and protruding are / will be
removed from luatex; keep in mind that in pdftex they're also
experimental, far from perfect etc ...

  I am trying to get ConTeXt working on a cweaved TeX file and
  am getting an Undefined control sequence error. A working
  example (especially the source for the cweb-scr files) would
  be extremely useful.

 Maybe this can help you
 http://wiki.contextgarden.net/User:Luigi.scarso#Modules::documentation

Thanks for the information.

Using texexec --pdf --modules m-cweb my cweaved file compiles without
error but the output is not correct. I will post a simple example with
a different subject line.

I was hoping to get the cweave file for cweb-scr.pdf. I like way the
screen is setup
and was hoping to use some of the macros in my programs.

[NTG-context] Using context with cweave

2007-08-27 Thread John Luciani
I created the file hello.w containing the following lines ---

@** Hello.

@c
@header files@@;

int main(void) {
  printf(Hello World.\n);
  return(0);
}

@ Header files.
@header files@+=
#include stdio.h

I run the commands
cweave hello.w
texexec --pdf --modules m-cweb hello.tex

The text that is output in hello.pdf are cweb macros ---

\input cwebmac
\N{0}{1}Hello.
\Y\B\X2:header files\X\7
.
.
.

If I run pdftex hello.tex a correct pdf file is output.

Are there other modules that I need to load to use ConTeXt with a cweave
file? Is there a documentation file that I missed? I am using he ConTeXt that
came with texlive-2007.

If there is a cweave file that produces a nice layout like
cweb-scr.pdf available
for download please let me know.

Thanks.
