As Hans explained the information is load earlier than in MkII but I can
show you why your definition can also fail in MkII.

\startcomponent myfile

\def\noffigures{1}

\def\savenoffigures
  {\savecurrentvalue{\noffigures}{\getnumber[figure]}}

\appendtoks \savenoffigures \to \everystoptext

\def\shownoffigures{\noffigures}

This text has \shownoffigures.

\dorecurse{10}{\placefigure{something}{figure}}

\stopcomponent

This results always in 1 for the total number of figures.

A better definition for the countervalue is:

\def\shownoffigures
  {\doifdefinedelse{noffigures}{\noffigures}{0}}

without the initial value for \noffigures.

Hi Thomas+Charles,

Two questions:

1. What's the difference between getting the texmf tree using rsync, as
you suggest, and using ctxtools --updatecontext? Are those equivalent?

2. It looks like the subdirectories that I want are

  common
  context
  luatex
  man
  metapost

if I want to follow only luatex development. (The only subdirectories
that aren't in that list are mswin, which doesn't apply to me, and
pdftex and xetex.) I'd like to just put this on top of my TeXLive
(2007) distribution. Once I copy thse binaries to my TeXLive binary
directory, what's the next step? Do I need to rebuild the ConTeXt
format, for example?

What I'm looking for is a way to keep up-to-date with ConTeXt and LuaTeX
development; I'd rather not keep a separate installation with all and
only ConTeXt in it, together with a shell script that sets up *only*
ConTeXt. I'm happy to keep up-to-date by overwriting the relevant parts
of my TeXLive distribution with the freshest texmf and binaries. That
way, within a single shell I can use the freshest ConTeXt as well as
LaTeX and pacakges from the TeX Collection. Perhaps I am going against
the intention of the "minimal installation"; but the discussion of how
to get a minimal ConTeXt installation overlaps with the discussion of
how to stay up-to-date. I'm more interested in the latter than the
former. Perhaps the best thing for such a user would be to just track
the TeXLive development tree using cvs or rsync. I'm curious to hear
any suggetions.

Thanks,

Jesse

At the moment the only reasonable answer is to edit tex.rb (every time
when you update ConTeXt) I'm affraid. Hans doesn't provide any command
line opton to change that, and apparently Jonathan didn't provide any
primitive to change that either. You could create or edit a
configuration file for dvipdfmx, but I'm affraid that passing an
option to xdvipdfmx (which is done by default in ConTeXt already)
would overwrite that setting anyway.

You have two options if you really really need that:
1.) bribe Hans for command-line option and volunteer to write man
pages for TeX Live (for ConTeXt they are still missing)
2.) bribe Jonathan to add a primitive
(but have a good excuse for it :)

While reading code you can simply ignore them. You can also ignore them
while writing code (at least initially). The advantage of these \v! \c!
thingies is that it makes it easier to catch typos and write a
multi-lingual interface.

Re: [NTG-context] context manuals sources

2008-06-29 Thread Charles P. Schaum
In a parser, a piece of code that interprets a set of structured rules
(grammar) from a (partially or fully) tokenized input stream from the
lexical analyzer at the front end, LHS is something on the left hand
side of an equation or term (thus, on the left-hand parse tree) and RHS
is on the right hand side.

There are free sources out there to find stuff on parsing so you don't
have to go and buy the Dragon book (Aho, Sethi, Ullmann), which I
nevertheless consider a vade mecum. You will find links to such
documentation under the computer -> reference category at:

http://yoel.info/links.htm

Best wishes, and welcome to the world of artificial languages.

Cool, it does work now :)

Euuuh, other than constant and variable...

LHS, RHS and enumeration are like klingon to me. :O)

Are these terms important to understand the code ?

Jonathan Kew's response...

You can't use \pdfminorversion in XeTeX, that's a pdfTeX-specific
command. I think you need to pass the -V command-line option to
xdvipdfmx (I expect this can be done somewhere in the ConTeXt
scripts, but don't know any details), or else set it in the
dvipdfmx.cfg configuration file. AFAIK, the usual default is 4, but
you can set it higher if you need to embed other PDFs that use a
higher version.

Somebody knows the details ?

c is a constant (LHS), v is a variable (RHS enumeration).

[NTG-context] context manuals sources

2008-06-29 Thread Alan Stone
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the meaning and use
of the c! and v! prefixes in commands in, for
example, the layo-xx.tex source files at
http://context.aanhet.net/svn/manuals/context/
aka...

\setupcolors
  [\c!state=\v!start]

\setupsystem
  [\c!random=\v!big]

\setuplayout
  [\c!location=\v!middle,
   \c!style=\ss,
   \c!backspace=2.5cm,
   \c!topspace=1.5cm,
   \c!width=16cm,
   \c!margindistance=.25cm,
   \c!margin=2.5cm,
   \c!height=\v!middle]

:Oo ?

I think this is a problem in context.el. David Kastrup helped me with
this problem at last year's ConTeXt meeting. Open the file auctex/
context.el in your favorite text editor. Now search for this line:

((re-search-forward "^ TeX\\(Exec\\|Util\\)" nil t) ;; strange regexp
--pg

Insert a question mark right before TeX, so the line reads

((re-search-forward "^ ?TeX\\(Exec\\|Util\\)" nil t) ;; strange
regexp --pg

That should fix your problem. pg, a.k.a. Patrick Gundelach, are you
reading this? :-)

[NTG-context] Total number of figures/tables, etc.

2008-06-29 Thread Oleg Kolosov
Hi!

Is there are an easy way to get total number of pages/tables/figures
etc.? \getnumber[table] of \getnumber[figure] returns 0,
\getnumber[page] gives some irrelevant number. I've found command
\totalnumberofpages, is there are something similar for others? It would
be great to also automatically change the following word as in:

1 figure, but 2 figures

Is there support for that in ConTeXt?

Not that I know of, but I was hoping someone else did.
