[NTG-context] mkiv

2008-10-17 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,

at the context meeting it was concluded that there is no reason for mkiv
to be fully downward compatible.

one thing that i consider removing is the 'background=screen' option
from \framed. After all, screens internally already are just grayscales
and the old 'method' mechanism is no longer valid given postscript and
pdf technologies

in practice it means that those who use it (in mkiv) will have to use
colors (grayscales) instead (the last time that i used screens myself is
  sometime last century)

Hans

[NTG-context] new beta

2008-10-17 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,

this time a beta that is more beta than usual (mkiv)

- it needs a recent luatex (no surprise)
- there are some speedups, but it might break things (should not happen)
- the memory footprint should be a bit smaller (esp fonts)
- font fallbacks etc have some fixes

a major change is that now all multipass data goes into the jobname.tuc
file (only lists are still in the tuo file); a next release will have
sectioning redone and for mkiv the tuo file will be gone

Re: [NTG-context] luatex 0.30.1

2008-10-17 Thread Taco Hoekwater

Hi again,

Can someone tell me what the exact version of luatex is in the
minimals? (and what platform, esp. for failures)

Assuming it is the coroutines (and that seems likely) I
will try fix the problem on monday (no time today). Worst
case scenario for the solution I have in mind is that
coroutines will remain broken *only* on OpenBSD, and
everything else will go back to 'normal'.

[NTG-context] Arabic script bug in MKIV

2008-10-17 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi everyone
At last I could install minimal context to use the latest luatex
(0.30.1) with latest cont-tmf release. Thanks.
I don't know if the following is a luatex or Context bug. Sorry if
here is not the right place to report this.
After compiling the following lines I faced two problems in the output.
1- In the first line words get mixed.
2- In the second line only 456 appeared but it should be 0123456789.
The second problem occurs for the specific font that I have used and I
can resolve it by using another font. The problem is that in the font,
the character ۱ for example is assigned to two unicode characters, one
for U+0661 (arabic digit one) and also for U+06F1 (farsi digit one).
But MKIV doesn't know this approach. In fact, only digits 4,5, and 6
are different in farsi and arabic so they appeared in the output
correctly. XeTeX knows this kind of character assignment.

The font can be downloaded from
http://irmug.org/portal/index.php?name=Downloadsreq=getitlid=48

Thanks.

was this beta supposed to take care of the font problem I reported? I

core-itm.tex with the comment new per 2006/10/20). I always end of
copying the definition of complexdoitemgroupitem to my private modules and
changing the emwidth in the definition to 0.5\emwidth. Can you please keep
this key to be configurable with a key (textinbetween)?

BTW, any particular reason not to simply say
 \removeunwantedspaces\space\ignorespaces instead of
 \removeunwantedspaces\hskip\emwidth\!!plus\interwordstretch\!!minus\interwordshrink\relax
\stopitemgroup uses just the first variant.

 Thanks,

 Hi Aditya,

what do you about the following solution, the space between each
item is configurable with the space key, the fourth parameter
\dostartitemgroup gobbles we get from \startitemize if we use two
 parameters.

Thank you for looking into this old request. This does exactly what I
want. I just have one comment regarding the default. Maybe, for
consistency, the space key should behave as in \setupinterlinespace

space=none|small|medium|big|dimension

Other than this, it is perfect. Thanks a lot.

Hans, can this be included in the core?

Thanks,

Re: [NTG-context] new beta

 Hi,

this time a beta that is more beta than usual (mkiv)

 - it needs a recent luatex (no surprise)
 - there are some speedups, but it might break things (should not
 happen)
 - the memory footprint should be a bit smaller (esp fonts)
 - font fallbacks etc have some fixes

a major change is that now all multipass data goes into the
 jobname.tuc
file (only lists are still in the tuo file); a next release will have
sectioning redone and for mkiv the tuo file will be gone

 Hi Hans,

was this beta supposed to take care of the font problem I reported? I
have now one example which appears to work again; another one (and the
minimal example I sent) still fail with the same symptoms. Just
 thought I'd mention it...

i had no time to look into it, so if it already solbes part of your
problem, best send me an updated bug test

Hans

wrong binary ... you need the latest greatest luatex (new statistic)

so luatex on minimals-beta is broken,,,

 Hi again,

Can someone tell me what the exact version of luatex is in the
minimals? (and what platform, esp. for failures)

Assuming it is the coroutines (and that seems likely) I
will try fix the problem on monday (no time today). Worst
case scenario for the solution I have in mind is that
coroutines will remain broken *only* on OpenBSD, and
everything else will go back to 'normal'.

now it works ok with rev 1564

[NTG-context] Reading the source...?

2008-10-17 Thread Marcin Borkowski
Hi,

assume that I would like to read some parts of the ConTeXt source (to
learn something interesting, to learn how to do that-and-that in
ConTeXt, or just for fun;)). Where do I start? I mean: what is the
non-terribly-difficult way for the beginner? I have rather good
expertise in plain TeX and also some in LaTeX (if this helps).

Thanks in advance

- Is it a Perl program or a Perl script?
- Well, a script is what you give the actors.
A program is what you give the audience.

Start by reading http://wiki.contextgarden.net/System_Macros

This would explain how basic programming structures in Context work. Since
you know plain tex, you can also read syst-gen.tex. Most of it is fairly
straight forward.

Then I would suggest that you start with some functionality that you use
fairly often, and see how it is implemented in ConTeXt (don't start with
section heads, they are the most convoluted ConTeXt macros). Most of
ConTeXt source code is fairly easy to read.
