 Hi everyone,

 questions are:
1- Am I supposed to just create these two files and then run context
 --make cont-pe.
2- Can context accept these two files in UTF-8 encoding.

you need to adapt mult-con and mult-com but at the same time we need to
adapt mult-sys, so as an experiment if things work out ok, just play a
bit with mult-con/com e.g. replace a few harmless commands in the
english interface and see if things work ok for persian

 footnote: voetnoot footnote
fussnote poznamkapodcarou
notapdp notasubsol
notepdp

eventually persian can become the 8th entry

 footnote: voetnoot somethingpersian
fussnote poznamkapodcarou
notapdp notasubsol
notepdp

\somethingpersian then should give you a footnote

(we never really tested it with utf8 input so far)

(when i have time i will (for luatex) make this mechanism different i.e.
just lua tables from which i then can generate the con/com files)
 Hi Hans and everybody,
I did as you said and saw two things.
1- The good news: it is possible to assign another name (even persian)
for an option name. For example the word packed which is used as an
option in some commands like \setupitemize works well if you
 substitute it with anything.
2- The bad news: names of commands (I mean words that is used in the
input file with a backslash in front of them like footnote or
setupsomething) are not well behaved if we change them in
mult.con.tex. I tried to change for example the word footnote with a
persian word with more than one character and in the running time I
got the error that that command is not defined. But I was able to
redefine footnote with a just one (persian) character.

You need characters with catcode 11 for the commands and most of the
chars outside the ASCII range have catcode 12 which can be used only
in commands with the length 1 like your footnote example.

Here is a example how to use umlauts for the german interface:

\catcode`ü=11

\startcommandsdutchenglish
  german czech
  italian romanian
  french

  definittete
   setuphead: stelkopinsetuphead
  stelleüberschriftein nastavnadpis
  impostatesta seteazatitlu
  regletete

if someone knew a way to prevent hyphenation of the last word of the
last line in the second column on odd pages. (Yes, I can fix it later,
but I want to prevent it.) (Still on MkII)

There is only \brokenpenalty :

   \brokenpenalty 1
   \def\defaultbrokenpenalty {1}
   \def\defaultgridbrokenpenalty {1}

This prevents ConTeXt from breaking any page after any line that ends
with a hyphen. That is not quite to what you asked, but it is about the
best that can be done automatically because in TeX, there is no direct
interaction between the paragraph breaker and the page breaker.

(well, you can probably patch the output routine in some way so that
this setting is only in effect on odd pages, but in multicolumn mode
the definition of odd page could be problematic).

except two unnecessary files in my working directory, they are
 \jobname-texutil0.tmp and texutil.tub.

no surprise because the new code is not yet in the beta -)

the tub file is there for a second pass (backward refs) and the tmp is
just the last block

[NTG-context] bug in latest: page backgrounds

2008-10-23 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
Hi all,

for some reason, the latest beta defers the application of a page
background to the second page. Example:

\setupcolors[state=start]

\startuniqueMPgraphic{fill}
StartPage ;
fill Page withcolor green ;
StopPage ;
\stopuniqueMPgraphic

\defineoverlay
   [testfill]
   [\useMPgraphic{fill}]

\setupbackgrounds[page]
   [background={testfill}]

\starttext

Hello

hm, maybe the catcode initialization takes place too late

Here is a example how to use umlauts for the german interface:

in the next beta this system is replaced by another one:

- mult-def.lua

this is a table that has all variables, constants, elements and commands
in a hash which then can be extended without the need to adapt the tex code

- mult-en, mult-de, mult-nl ...

these are generated by mtxrun --script interface --contect

- cont-en.xml cum suis

the derived ones are also generated by the previously mentioned command

- stripped down mult-ini.{mkii,mkiv}

the other two files (mult-con and mult-com) are no longer used

taco and i are currently checking the new zip

[NTG-context] picture before \chapter breaking \header \footer setup

2008-10-23 Thread Jelle Huisman
Hi all,

Another question, this time about \headers and \footers. On the first
page of the chapter I have the page number in the footer and on all
other pages they are in the header. This works fine, as expected.
However I have to include an \externalfigure *before* the \chapter
command and I discovered that I have to use \startcombination because
otherwise the \chapter moves to the next page. However, when I use
\startcombination ... etc \chapter is not longer the first thing on the
page and the special header/footer setup is not triggered (apparently
\chapter has to come first for that to happen). See sample code:

% sample
\definetext[mychapter][footer][pagenumber]
\setuphead[chapter][header=high,footer=mychapter]
\showframe
\starttext

%\startcombination[1*1]{\externalfigure}{ % uncomment to see problem
\chapter{first}
%}\stopcombination % uncomment to see problem

\dorecurse{20}{\input tufte \relax}
\chapter{second} \dorecurse{20}{\input tufte \relax} % this works as
expected
\stoptext
% sample

Is it possible to make this work? (maybe an extra \chapter command
before the combination that triggers the header-footer setup, but that
is not printed after all?)

Thanks for any help.

After at least half a dozen reiterations of this discussion (and it
is indeed always exactly the same discussion), I have now reached the
point where I no longer feel the slightest need to take any action any
more. From where I stand, it seems that the unhappy people just want

I myself would be much more willing to spend time on (managing|writing)
the manual if there were any people showing an active interest in it.

I myself am very interested in *reading* it - I was delighted to see
the new fonts chapter and the new documention project in general. But
I am not sure I can contribute much. I am much more of a consumer

Re: [NTG-context] Problem with mkiv and MPgraphic

2008-10-23 Thread Arthur Reutenauer
The version I have is the one from the Garden:
[…] typeset on October 23, 2008 at 15:57, with mkiv, LuaTeX revision
 2, (LuaTeX date stamp 2008102016),, ConTeXt version 2008.10.21 19:42.

  (From the moonlight gardener)

For future reference, the LuaTeX version used on the Garden is written
below the input form, between brackets, next to LuaTeX in the radiobox
(in that case, beta-0.30.2).

But listen to the director of the Federal Reserve ... er, Pragma, and
don't panic! Your ConTeXt stocks aren't going to lose value any time
soon ;-)

[NTG-context] Documentation (Re: PhD Thesis in ConTeXt)

2008-10-23 Thread Taco Hoekwater

Hi,

but also lack of knowledge :)

There actually is something you (and everybody else) can do: provide
feedback on the current version of the manual(s). For example, it
would be nice to know whether there are errors or unclarities in it
(or omissions, but that actually does require knowledge).

For an easy start, the two pdfs of the typography and fonts
chapters are on-line:

http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-typography.pdf
http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-fonts.pdf

The other chapters are a bit harder to comment on because (currently)
you have to be able to compile the manual yourself to read the pdfs.
Anyway, in and below the same folder are all needed sources:

   http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en

(Maybe someone could put the current full pdf online somewhere?)

There also is a mailing list specifically about the new manual:

Best wishes,

= in cont-xx.tex change \defaultinterface to persian
= add the mapping from xx to persian to mult-def.tex
= add the xx entries to mult-def.lua (most work)
= run mtxrun --script interface --context

at the time I struggled with UTF-8 outputs, so it remained incomplete
on this and I just manually re-saved my file as such. I'll correct
that.

Also, now that I remember, my code creates entry keys based on author
name and publication year. If I remember well, I also believe the keys
didn't work when they were not pure ASCII, so I had this small
function getting rid of all accented characters in keys, as my native

Tried with MkII and MkIV. No small caps in sans-serif only if text is written
in english. In MkIV with gyre smallcaps are available only in normal script.
But with cyrillic no smallcaps in every case.

If you need I can test every combination and make a more detailed report.

 2. adventor have italic but slanted displays as normal (roman)

in type-otf.tex at least this is missing:

\starttypescript [sans] [adventor] % and possibly others
 \definefontsynonym [\typescriptprefix{n:\typescripttwo}-Regular]

The same is true for mono.

Great! These definitions fixed the most problems. One note: previously
cyrillic should be smallcaps text displayed as roman, now it is missing
completely, but latin works fine. Is there a workaround to remap this somehow?
I didn't learn about typescripts enough yet to do this myself (but working on
it).

 3. cursor have only roman script (no bold, slanted, etc.)
 \definetypeface [mygyre] [tt] [sans] [cursor]

 Try
\definetypeface [mygyre] [tt] [mono] [cursor]

Also, in type-otf.tex one needs to fix
 \starttypescript [sans] [cursor] [name]
 into
 \starttypescript [sans] [mono] [name]

Possibly this should be: \starttypescript [mono] [cursor] [name] ?

(I'm just afraid that you'll find so many problem in the Cyrillic part
 of Gyre ...)

Except for missing small-caps (this is not critical at all) and with addition
of your definitions in type-otf.tex TeX Gyre support is enough to write in
Russian language (tested all fonts). I've compiled big documents and not found
any deficiencies so far.

Attached the resulting type-otf.tex. Maybe this'll save a few minutes for
someone.

[NTG-context] Invalid UTF-8 sequence in bbl file

2008-10-23 Thread Oleg Kolosov
Hi all, Taco!

I was experimenting with bib module and discovered something which looks like
a bug.

'texexec' ('texexec bibtest') runs fine but typesets references ('s' key)
incorrectly.

As MkIV does not run bibtex on input files automatically, I run 'bibtex'
manually once ('bibtex bibtest'), then 'context' ('context bibtest') gives
'Invalid UTF-8 sequence' error.

The resulting .bbl is the same in both cases.

It seems that 'author' field and 's' key in bbl file are generated
incorrectly, while others like 'title', 'city', etc. are fine.

See the attached files.

I'm using just updated minimals. t-bib version 2008.04.17.

As MkIV does not run bibtex on input files automatically, I run 'bibtex'
manually once ('bibtex bibtest'), then 'context' ('context bibtest') gives
 'Invalid UTF-8 sequence' error.

This is caused by the fact that bibtex doesn't understand UTF-8 at all
(it is only able to do something useful with byte encodings). I have
no immediate solution for you, the best advice I can offer right now is
for you to manually fix the bbl file after running bibtex.

The whole database is converted in one go, and there is never a need to
re-run bibtex unless when you delete the bbl by accident, so this is
a single (laborious) step (under the assumption that the bib file is
finished already). A long-term solution will depend on a more modern
bib database processor (like J.M. Hufflen's mlbibtex).

to complain about, but are not willing to help improve the existing
documentation, and that the happy people just want to post pointers
but fail to see a real need to improve anything.

I'm (relatively) new here (I've been subscribed to the list for a few
years, but only recently started to use ConTeXt more seriously), but I'd
like to take the risk and add my point of view.

I miss a good documentation *a lot*. OTOH, if I were to choose among
the uber-community and uber-manual, I'd prefer the first one (maybe
that's why people prefer the status quo;)).

I would love to help improve the existing docs, though. Having
uber-manuals *and* uber-community would smash this poor LaTeX-thing out
of the market;P.

The question is: what do I do? I post something to the wiki from time
to time, but I don't want to engage myself too much - I'm currently
involved in at least one *big* project (which is, btw, connected with
writing some LaTeX document classes); together with my work (doing and
teaching mathematics) this takes *a lot* of time... What's more, I
can't really help writing manuals for something I don't completely
understand...

I myself would be much more willing to spend time on (managing|writing)
the manual if there were any people showing an active interest in it.

Assume that I finally learn how to use that SVN thing and that I try (in
some indefinite time, though) post my remarks on the existing docs, my
examples of files so that they could be either introduced into the
manuals or deemed non-ConTeXt-esque enough;) or my suggestions of
rewriting something: would this help?

And a general remark: of course, my point is not to wipe out LaTeX. It
has its place. But popularizing ConTeXt would be great (and I'm doing
it all the time among my friends!). And good manuals are a *must*
then... Obviously, writing a good manual takes really much time (and
from some point of view is harder than actually writing code, I guess -
it's very similar in maths, when it's way easier to jot down some notes
for yourself than to prepare some proof for actual publication...) As I
said before (in another post), it's completely obvious for me that
neither Hans nor you, Taco, have time for writing a good
documentation...

 Best wishes,
 Taco

Best,

There actually is something you (and everybody else) can do: provide
feedback on the current version of the manual(s). For example, it
would be nice to know whether there are errors or unclarities in it
(or omissions, but that actually does require knowledge).

For an easy start, the two pdfs of the typography and fonts
 chapters are on-line:

 http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-typography.pdf
 http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-fonts.pdf

The other chapters are a bit harder to comment on because (currently)
you have to be able to compile the manual yourself to read the pdfs.
Anyway, in and below the same folder are all needed sources:

http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en

(Maybe someone could put the current full pdf online somewhere?)

There also is a mailing list specifically about the new manual:

http://lists.foundry.supelec.fr/mailman/listinfo/contextman-reference

 Best wishes,
 Taco

Wow! You've answered my questions even before I asked them!!!

//TeX hacking is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be,
  ekhm, unnatural.//

(Not really a SW fan, but I just couldn't resist;).)

I didn't think about bibtex as a separate package from old times, was too
carried away by luatex fancies. Thanks for clarifying this out.

I've used the following workaround: write bib file in 8-bit encoding (koi8-r
for example), run bibtex on it once, then convert bbl to UTF-8. This works
perfectly, should have guessed it earlier. I don't change bib files
frequently, so this solution suits me well.

Attached the resulting type-otf.tex. Maybe this'll save a few minutes for
 someone.

Wow! I don't have the time to test it now with Polish, but I'll do it
soon probably. I guess it is usable only in MkIV...? If yes, I'll have
to switch;).

Hans, any chance to have this code included someday soon in the
minimals?

If there are problems with mkii, type-gyr.tex should be fixed as well.
Just point to the problems.
