maybe style={\bf\cap} works

in such cases it's best to define a cap typeface (with all available
styles) or just use \definefont as there is often not much logic in
these variants; in mkiv you could try dynamic features but that only
works in node mode

This seems to be unrelated to images issue since MPost graphics are

 but I'm guessing the later.

Changing the \startMPLIBtoPDF so that the \hbox where the graphics is
placed is fixed to TLT direction fixes this, but I'm not sure if it is
 safe to do so.

 for the moment i did

 \def\startMPLIBtoPDF#1#2#3#4% watch the transparency reset
   {\naturalhbox\bgroup

(as \naturalhbox is the official way)

this keeps the internal direction (in textext) the same as the outer one

I didn't know about it, thanks for the tip and the fix.

Such approach has a major disadvantage, one have to take care of not
altering macros and tex commands or we may end with a broken document (I
have more general use case where the to be substituted strings can
occur in macros as well), and we know that only TeX can read TeX :)

I'm thinking in lua callback that get fed with text buffers in a similar
way to OTPs, so one can use regular expressions to pre-process the text
without messing with node list, think in code that replaces 2nd with
2\high{nd} etc. which would be very complex to be done at node list
level.

For MKII, define

and then use \boldsymbol around symbol that you want in bold.

For MKIV, bold math isn't handled yet.

Metapost in MkIV is different from MkII and all labels are typeset
and colored in TeX, if you want a label use textext(...).

My \textext{...} (which is only defined in MkII) is just a TeX
wrapper and converts \textext{\blue RED} in textext(\blue RED)
and in MkIV btex ... etex is converted in textext(...) too.

What's written in the manual should work in MkII but a lot
of things are handled in a different like colors.

indeed tex does the coloring; also honoring mp's colors has been
discussed on this list but fo rthe moment will nto be supported as it
will complicate the code; maybe when i have redone the backend and when

Can I have it appear in the figure as

I do not know of fonts that provide calligraphic and doublestroke symbols.
Calligraphic uppercase letters, and doublestroke letters are provided by

{\cal ABC} {\Bbd ABC}

without requiring any extra setup.

what is the current (preferred) way of using math bold symbols.

For MKII, define

\definetypeface [boldmath] [mm] [boldmath] [latin-modern] [default]

and then use \boldsymbol around symbol that you want in bold.

For MKIV, bold math isn't handled yet.

Thanks Aditya. Sorry but that does not work. The text line just starts shifting
to the left for me. It spills outside the frame.

I tried with both MKIV and MKII. The MKIV version I tried with is

Any ideas why it may not be working for me?

Thanks.

Awesome! That works great. Before asking I tried searching a lot in metafun
manual and on the web but could not find anything. I am not yet clear about the
logic. When I saw that I could color labels using the \color[red]{red} command
by putting it between btex...etex, it seemed to me that any context command
would work if put in there. So I tried \crlf to get a linebreak and that did not
work. So I thought maybe only very few specific commands work. Now after seeing
your solution, again I am wondering, what determines which commands work and
which do not. Anyhow, I am not asking for an explanation, because it will most
probably beyond me and may be a long one for someone to explain. But I
appreciate the solution.

Thanks again.

Here is a simplified picture. Basically, anything inside btex ... etex (or
textext(...) or \sometxt{...}) is in what is known as TeX's horizontal
mode. Think of this as what you will get if you put the same argument in a
\hbox (see the TeXbook or TeX for the impatient for details). To get
multiple lines you need tex to be in the vertical mode, a \vbox. A vanilla
\framed is like a \hbox. Framed with align=normal is like a \vbox. So, for
most purposes you can you \framed. There are some commands that need to
know the width of the box (like \start stop formula). In those cases you
need to specify width=something to \framed.

Of course, certain objects like floats, footnotes, marginpars, will never
work inside metapost. (I think you can get floats and footnotes to work,
but that will require some hackery)

Thanks very much for the explanation. Now I understand much better. I remember
reading about the importance of horizontal mode and vertical mode in the Seroul
and Levy's book I think.
