[NTG-context] EnglishRule and Lua / Simplefonts module

2009-11-24 Thread Charles Doherty
Dear Hans and Wolfgang,

I have started experimenting with the Lua engine through TeXShop. I use
\EnglishRule in a Newsletter to separate major items. When I use it in the
attached file it works as always when I use the ConteXt engine (TL2009) and in
my minimals installation it works fine using MinimalsConTeXt engine and
MinimalsXeConTeXt engine. When I switch to using the simplefonts module in
MinimalsLua engine the \EnglishRule does not behave properly. Also the text
switches to italic. I have attached a small file and if you comment out the
lines and switch between the engines you can see what I mean.

Thanks for any help,
Best wishes,
Charlie

For math fonts only typescripts are loaded and the typescript name
for 'Asana Math' is 'asana' (type-otf.mkiv) but when you add

  \definetypescriptsynonym[asanamath][asana]

(I will include this line in the module) before \setmathfont

[NTG-context] first-setup.sh on MacOSX problem...

2009-11-24 Thread Bernhard Rosensteiner
Hello all,

after my new OSX installation i did first-setup.sh as always but now i get:

This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.40.6-2009100310 (TeX Live 2009) (INITEX)
 \write18 enabled.
(/Applications/ConTeXt/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex
! I can't find file `context.tex'.
l.16 \input context.tex

Please type another input file name:

at the end of the install process. I don´t know what to do now. Interestingly
in my ConTeXt folder is now a texmf-osx-64 folder with more files in it than in
the texmf-osx-intel (bin and man folder in texmf-osx-64 and web2c folder in
texmf-osx-intel) which was never there. Has this to do with the discussion on
the mailing list about 64 bit OSX binaries? Installing into another folder as
Applications  triggered the same message.

Please help

best regards
Bernhard

[NTG-context] Problems with wide floating tables in context mkIV

2009-11-24 Thread Massimiliano Lambertini

Hello, all

Maybe this problem has been already addressed before, but I didn't find
anything about it in contextgarden and ML archives. So, here you are.

I have a document laid out in two columns, and some wide tables laid out
using Natural Tables syntax. These tables are then placed on the
document this way:

\placetable[top][table-1020]{Intersystem Travel
Times}{\getbuffer[tablebuffer-id]}

When I compile my files using XeTeX engine, the table is placed at the
top of the page, spanning two columns. When I use the LuaTeX engine, the
table is placed in the middle of a column and cut off by its page margin
or overwritten by the neighbouring column text.

I define column sections by using the \startcolumns...\stopcolumns
directives. Do I have to switch to columnsets?

A sample of the problem I depicted here can be found at:

http://www.lambertini.org/testfloats.zip .

The zip file contains two pdf (one compiled with XeTeX, another with
LuaTeX) and the TeX source.

Thanks in advance for your responses,

Massimiliano Lambertini

[NTG-context] setuptex files broken in the latest release 2009-11-24

2009-11-24 Thread Otared Kavian

Hi all, maybe more particularly Mojca,

I noticed that in the latest release of the minimals (ConTeXt version
2009.11.24 10:13) something is broken: neither mkii nor mkiv work (actually
this happened also with the release of Friday November 20, then it was solved
with November 23 release and again it appeared today…).
I could solve the problem by replacing the setuptex files coming with the
latest release by those of ConTeXt version 2009.11.13 12:45: now I can typeset
my files even with Math-Times and mkiv… (Working on a macBook Pro and Mac OS X
10.6.2).

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Can be a problem of mkiv,
it does not work even with
\stopcolumns
\placetable[top][t-1020]{Intersystem Travel Times}{\getbuffer[ta-1020]}

\startcolumns
\dorecurse{2}{\input zapf}
\dorecurse{2}{\input tufte}

It works in mkii with

You are on Snow Leopard. Yes, it's expected to break (sorry) because
so many people have been complaining that they want 64-bit binaries
(and I could have written a visible warning to the mailing list which
I forgot to do). I hoped for the fact that the number of SL users is
small enough, so that they would be willing to rerun first-setup and
fetch the 64-bit binaries.

I decided to patch to detect SL, then changed my mind, and then
changed my mind again after Hans figured out that he's not able to
boot with 64-bit kernel and requested to support 64-bit platforms
automatically.

If you would boot into 64-bit mode (try to boot by holding down keys 4
and 6), it would not work at all without replacing the version of
first-setup.sh that you currently use.

Sure, we should provide fat binaries, but ... two years ago I was
still working on 56k connection during weekends (if anyone wants usb
modem, let me know :). The distribution arose from my desire for not
having to fetch Hans' one-line patches in 4MB zips several times per
day. Fat binaries would mean some 60 MB of extra space (and I consider
that a waste of resources).

Dear Wolfgang,

I deleted my Minimals folder and did a complete re-install following
instructions on ConTeXtGarden curl -o first-setup.sh

etc.

I also downloaded simplefonts using the sh ./first-setup.sh

I still get the results as described below.

Re: [NTG-context] setuptex files broken in the latest release 2009-11-24

2009-11-24 Thread Otared Kavian
Dear Mojca,

I did what you suggest.
Now, after updating first-setup.sh, the behaviour is different but neither mkii
nor mkiv work… In my log file I obtain only
………MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua'

and no typesetting.

However, as I said in my previous explanations, replacing the setuptex files
(there are 4 of them…), I can use the latest release of 2009-11-24 10:13.
So to my understanding everything boils down to an issue with the new setuptex
files (I don't change anything regarding 32 or 64 bit mode).

Many thanks again…
Best regards: OK

 Hi all, maybe more particularly Mojca,

 I noticed that in the latest release of the minimals (ConTeXt version
 2009.11.24 10:13) something is broken: neither mkii nor mkiv work (actually
 this happened also with the release of Friday November 20, then it was
 solved with November 23 release and again it appeared today…).

 May I ask you to fetch the new version of first-setup.sh, run it and retry?

 I could solve the problem by replacing the setuptex files coming with the
 latest release by those of ConTeXt version 2009.11.13 12:45: now I can
 typeset my files even with Math-Times and mkiv… (Working on a macBook Pro
 and Mac OS X 10.6.2).

 What changes do you have in mind?

 Has anyone else noticed this problem?

 Yes, me, sorry.

You are getting luatex from TeX Live. At what point do you get that
warning? You should definitely get this if you don't initialize the
minimals (that is - if you don't use . setuptex or don't add PATH to
binaries).

I admit that I made some changes a few hours ago, so it would be very
helpful to know what sequence of commands exactly you use and when
exactly this happens.

 at the end of the install process.

You mean even before first-setup.sh finishes the job? If this is the
case ... One thing that might happen is that you use some random
intermediate version of first-setup.sh that doesn't pass --engine= to
mtx-update or that mtx-update forgets to respect that option.

I should reboot my computer in order to test.

 Interestingly in my ConTeXt folder is now a texmf-osx-64 folder with more
 files in it than in the texmf-osx-intel (bin and man folder in texmf-osx-64
 and web2c folder in texmf-osx-intel)

bin and man should be present in both. It's weird that they are
missing in osx-intel. web2c is generated during texexec --make ...,
so if formats are not made that can explain it.

 which was never there. Has this to do with the discussion on the mailing list
 about 64 bit OSX binaries? Installing into another folder as Applications
 triggered the same message.

That's quite possible. I guess that
uname -m
returns i386 on your machine, that you are running Snow Leopard, have
MacTeX or TeX Live installed. But I would not expect the minimals to
hang with that message.

Hi Charles and Wolfgang,

I have noticed the same problem, as the one Charles is describing, with the «
English rule » or the « swelled rule » and mkiv, and I think that this has
nothing to do with fonts. Maybe, it is rather with the way \localhsize is
defined in recent versions of mkiv: the « rule » appears in a rather starnge
way on different pages.

My minimal example test file:

%%%

%% defining swelled rule, or English rule...
\setupMPvariables[SwelledRule][height=2pt,breadth=.667\localhsize]
\startuniqueMPgraphic{SwelledRule}{height,breadth}
x1 = 0; x2 = x6 = .333x4; x3 = x5 = .667x4; x4 = \MPvar{breadth};
y1 = y4 = \MPvar{height}/2; y2 = y3 = \MPvar{height}; y5 = y6 = 0;
fill z1--z2--z3--z4--z5--z6--cycle;
\stopuniqueMPgraphic

\def\SwelledRule{\blank%
\setlocalhsize\midaligned{\reuseMPgraphic{SwelledRule}}\blank}
%% end swelled rule

\starttext

\dorecurse{20}{\input knuth \par \blank

Any ideas?

I checked, and it is broken on amd64:

But works on i686:

[NTG-context] Chicago citations in endnotes; short titles in bibliographies

2009-11-24 Thread Peter Park Nelson
I was just looking at the documentation for the Bibliography module and
wondering if anyone has tried to implement the full-on Chicago Manual of
Style Author-Title documentation format for endnotes/footnotes in books --
i.e. citations of the form Author, Full Title, Publisher, page followed in
subsequent references by Author, Short Title, page plus support for
Ibid, op.cit, and so forth.

Seems like this would be hard, but there are a lot of books out there that
follow this style (at least in the U.S.), especially in history/social
sciences.

To do so would require supporting a \shorttitle field and adding
mechanisms to keep track of what has been cited (in order to implement
switching between full and shortened reference forms and enable ibid/op.cit.
).

As an editor, this is probably beyond my technical abilities. Even so, if I
wanted to mess around with this, where would I start learning about the
internals of bibliography support in Context (beyond the documentation for
the bib module)?

Thanks,
PPN

Re: [NTG-context] Chicago citations in endnotes; short titles in bibliographies

2009-11-24 Thread Andreas Schneider
Hi Peter,

a similar question was asked not long ago ... and as it happens, some time
before that even by me. My solution for ibid footnote citations can be found
here:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/54129

It's surely not the Chicago Manual of Style-style but probably the
hardest part of it (the citation repetition logic). The citation style
related stuff is in the bibl-*.tex files and it should be possible to use
for example bibl-apa.tex as starting point.

Best regards,
Andreas.

[NTG-context] Adjusting the size of a figure when using placefigure

2009-11-24 Thread Curiouslearn
Please see the figure generated by the following minimal example. Due
to the dimensions chosen in the figure, the figure is wider than the
text width. Is there an option in \placefigure or another command that
can help to make this figure smaller (without changing the code of the
original figure)?

 Thank you.

\setuppapersize[letter][letter]
\setuplayout[leftedge=0in,leftmargin=1in,leftmargindistance=0in,rightmargin=1in,rightmargindistance=0in,rightedge=0in,leftedgedistance=0in,rightedgedistance=0in,topspace=0.5in,width=6.5in,height=10in]

\setupcolors[state=start]

\starttext
\startuseMPgraphic{firstFig}
numeric u;
u:=1in;
draw (0,0)--(4u,0) withpen pencircle scaled 2pt withcolor red;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\startuseMPgraphic{secondFig}
numeric u;
u:=1in;
draw (0,0)--(4u,0) withpen pencircle scaled 2pt withcolor blue;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\placefigure[here]{Two figures next to each other}
\startcombination[2*1]
{\useMPgraphic{firstFig}}{(a)}
{\useMPgraphic{secondFig}}{(b)}

It can be seen that due to the dimensions in the figure, the figure is

Just an afterthought to this problem: I discovered yesterday that the same file
behaved quite differently in different viewers. It was a file compiled with the
latest beta under linux, luatex 0.44, and with my own fonts.

1. In evince under linux, the file looked fine, no problems were apparent.

2. In Preview under OS X, the file showed only blank pages.

3. In Adobe Reader 9, both under linux and OS X, the file refused to open with
a dialogue saying it was damaged and couldn't be repaired.

So unfortunately, this is something we have to keep in mind when we test
something and say works here.

Why the \dimexpr?

Sounds like this bug in 0.44 that was fixed already:

  Bug fixes in 0.45:

  * Remove spurious newlines in the output pdf that could be the
result of using \pdfximage for an included pdf figure too early.

More a 'known limitation': intersection point calculations are not
perfect because of the fixed precision calculus.

Lint[4] is the culprit. With u=0.6cm it has these coordinates:
(170.07976,0.00014). Notice how the y coordinate is not actually
on the xaxis? That is because the actual intersection between
stLine and xaxis does not fit nicely into a scaled pair, so
metapost takes the 'closest approximation', which in this case
is slightly off both lines.

The solution is to add an explicit fix to Lint[4] just after its
current assignment:

Lint[4]:=(xpart Lint[4], 0);

This is not pretty, and one of the problems we hope to solve
with metapost 2.0.

Best wishes,
Taco

Yes, the bug has been fixed, and I should have mentioned that; I just wanted to
point out that tests may be sometimes deceptive: when I see an empty pdf in
preview and someone else runs the test file with evince, his first reaction
will probably be runs OK here, must be a misconfiguration in your
installtion.

Even better is to not use intersectionpoint at all: use
intersectiontimes instead. With that, you can select a point
that is guaranteed to be on one of the two paths.

That wasn't the point, I was not trying to give a comparative table of
pdf-viewers. luatex was buggy, but some viewers displayed the pdf nonetheless.
Doesn't make sense to test a dozen viewers because next time around, the subset
which does or does not work may be totally different.

Maybe unrelated, but maybe a luatex error as well:
transparency seems to work correctly when viewed with okular
(same library as evince) but not when view with acroread,
(including the windows version).
