[NTG-context] Learning ConTeXt from the Ground Up
Hello Everyone, I have been using ConTeXt for over a year now and worked out how to do most things I need to do. Every now and then, though, I need to do something that I cannot find any information about and in most cases I post a question here on the forum. I have received great help here over the months and like to thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions. The other day, however, I had a problem, posted a message here, got an answer and the answer did not quite work; I went back to the forum, got more help... In the process I realised that I should have been able to work this out myself; I was not even able to tweak the first answer and make it work. I am an IT engineer myself, but with little time (I guess I am not unique here) and even less experience in TeX. I guess what I am saying is, that I would like to gain a much deeper understanding of ConTeXt which will allow me to "program" in ConTeXt rather than just using the documented command. To gather information about ConTeXt I have - read the ConTeXt Reference Manual (http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf) - bought a couple of the published books by Hans Hagen - started reading the "TeX book" by Donald Knuth I have even briefly flirted with the idea of switching to LaTeX mainly because it would mean having a lot more literature and a broader community at my disposal. However, I just prefer the command structure and output of ConTeXt. Can anyone relate to my problem? Am I on the right track? What else should I be doing or reading to really break into ConTeXt? Regards, Malte. PS: Just to be clear; I don't mean for the above to be conceived as shortcomings of ConTeXt, rather I think of them as shortcomings of myself. The developers of ConTeXt have done a fantastic job and I really enjoy writing in ConTeXt and looking at the output. -- “The Electric Monk was a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder... [NTG-context] UWIN?
Out of curiosity, has anyone tried porting ConTeXt to the UWIN environment? UWIN is very much like cygwin in being a "Unix on Windows" environment. However, it is not based on GNU but is Real Unix code from AT&T Bell Labs. Many of the utilities are simply the latest versions of the original Version 7 Unix utilities, others are from BSD, System III and System V. The shell is genuine ksh93, not pdksh or bash/dash. There is a POSIX dll to provide a complete POSIX api. This is AT&T's own, not the "POSIX subsystem" from Microsoft. The cc command is a wrapper for Visual C, gcc or whatever you have. Instead of the usual autoconf..configure..make..make install dance you can use nmake. I can run the usual Windows context with a bit of fiddling but it would be nice to use the regular setuptex shell script et. al. -- Bill Meahan Westland, Michigan ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
Re: [NTG-context] Typefaces ... how does this work?
This approach works well for me, no modules required: (this is NOT a complete working example!) ... \setupbodyfont[mainface,12pt] ... \definefont[alt][fontname sa 1.0] \starttext Blah blah blah Blah blah {\alt boo hoo hoo} Blah blah blah \stoptext The "sa 1.0"is optional but if you want to adjust the alternate font so the x heights match you'll need it. If you are not using all predefined font styles, you could set your monospace, sans, serif, or whichever style you aren't using to the font you want to use and use the predefined command (e.g. \sf) to access that font. [NTG-context] how to print a simple booklet
Hi, this is probably a question with very simple solution, but I cannot figure it out or find a solution in wiki or manual. I just want to print simple booklet and after and after picking papers from printer do a single fold. With the following code the TITLE PAGE is correctly placed to the right of first sheet but all pages have backspace and page number on the right edge. Is that correct behaviour or I'm missing some basic fact? \setuppapersize[A5][A4,landscape] \setuparranging[2UP] \setuplayout[ width=8cm,height=middle, backspace=10mm,topspace=10mm, footer=8mm,header=0mm, alternative=doublesided] \setuppagenumbering[location={footer,left},alternative=doublesided] \showframe \starttext TITLE PAGE \page[yes] \dorecurse{15}{\input knuth} \stoptext Thanks Jan ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

For "context" (ConTeXt MkIV), you may want to try an OpenType Fraktur font, like: http://unifraktur.sourceforge.net/ The long s versus rounded s distinction is a text input issue, you have to inter the correct s according the position in the word (the rules are complex, different from a country to country and from a period to another). To run mkiv you use context mkiv the current target of development and is very advanced, while lualatex it's still behind . It's the recommanded format: mkii is of course stable, but every feature of mkii is now in mkiv and mkiv is more easy (I should also add faster than mkii but not always , we are working on it... oh well you can use luajiitex in case) For fonts you can search and try simplefonts (works with mkiv only) -- luigi ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
[NTG-context] Fraktur fonts
Hello list members, an only-a-few-days-fan of Context writes to you for the first time. I'm pleased to have found a program closer to TeX and younger than LaTeX. In the last years I used LaTeX for a bigger family project with good success, but experienced some difficulties in arranging minipages containing changing text and pictures especially in series letters. So I'm trying to do that using Context. Of course I cannot change hundreds of files from LaTeX to Context, but newer tasks I'd like to do in Context. There is a first question I have concerning Fraktur fonts which I'd like to use typesetting a poem: I found a 2-mail-discussion in your 2002-archiv concerning those fonts. But I have to admit that I don't understand what is written there. So, I tried simply \definefont[Gedichtfont][Fraktur] \Gedichtfont{... poem ...} both with "context" and "texexec", but I don't achieve the desired result. "texexec" displays a font somehow similar to Fraktur, but not a very nice one and much to broad; and it seems to have no different "s" (one inner-word and one word-end or syllable-end "s") as needed in Fraktur. And, my "texexec" doesn't know anything about umlauts and sharp s. Whereas my "context" (translating the same program), dosn't know Fraktur, but knows umlauts. So I'm always using both of them, enjoying the partial success of both, though I read somewhere, it should be better using "texexec". Well, a very nice Fraktur font is Yannis Haralambous' "yfrak" in his "yfont" series, the nicest one I've found until now. Could you please help me to formulate the correct commands to use a "nice" Fraktur font, be it "yfrak" or another one? But please remember, Context is still rather confusing to me. So, it should be simple enough.
